Right basically did an engine change ages ago and on startup when cold you rev the engine moderately and when it starts to rev there is a rattle nothing big but there is sumthing there. I have done about 3000miles in it this way and nothing is being effected, i changed the water pump and hyd tensioner but it is still there. listening normally it sounds like its coming from the alternator/cam area however i got a screwdriver against the oil cooler put my ear to it and u can hear the ratte quite well on that. That is what made me think water pump as its not too far away from it. The rattle isnt heavy enough to be somthing major sounds like something on the belt as being related to revving but im out of ideas at the moment. When you are in the cabin and you pull away it sounds quite diesel'ie low down. Havent done a real extensive investigation cause im off abroad (las vegas) in a few days so too busy but any help would be great. I would make a video but my camera is pure crap, also i just found what i think to be is my cat leaking somewhere looks like its blowing fumes about 5cm's down from the top of the dipstick, bummer.

Not all major problems sound bad. A few things you could check, if it sounds like its coming from the belt area check the belt tension, S engines like to be just a little tight on the timing belt, not TOO tight but a little, if they're too loose they will rattle when you get on the gas. Don't rule out a bottom end knock or piston slap just because it's not THAT loud. Other than that it's gonna be very hard for someone to help you diagnose a noise over the interet, sorry. (I'm not trying to sound like a jerk there)

(I'm not trying to sound like a jerk there) Just replace the cambelt and had the timing belt off its not coming from there or the cams or the alternator. I think the rattling is too clear to be coming from the block if u know wot i mean but who knows just really annoying cause its running fine but i have this rattle that ijust cant place. then once warmed up it pretty much goes -------------------- You Take Them Spoons Away He Cry Like A Baby, Mother F*ucking Spoon Love

I know what you're saying, but a buddy of mine just built a 4A-GE for his AE86 Corolla. He started it up the night he put it in the car, it had a rattle that was quite clear and sounded like it was coming from the timing belt area, it turned out to be piston slap. Piston slap wil go away when the car warms up because the pistons will expand enough to not rock back and forth. I'm not saying that's what yours is, but I am saying you shouldn't rule anything out just because it doesn't sound like you think it should. I deal with noises on cars everyday that don't sound like you would think.

I am getting the same exact thing. Now that I think about it, there's no rattling when its warm out, but here lately its been cold as hell and i've been hearing it pretty often. It's not loud or anything, just there.... and annoying

QUOTE Sounds reasonable, think im gonna get my mates phone and make a video tomorrow. Wouldn't a compression test confirm this? Unfortunately no, a compression test will not necessarilly tell you if you have piston slap. -------------------- Trust me, I do this every day |
