Which brings me to the point of people putting it on old/wimpy machines that shouldnt be running it.

Amen brother. Pretty much everyone I've talked to that complains about Vista, when I go to their computer to help them out it turns out they've got some POS machine that they expect to run everything perfectly.

Even a lot of these new laptops and pre-built computers being sold with Vista on them aren't powerful enough to run the operating system at full capacity: I.E. with the aero interface, etc, much less expect to be able to run games well. Hell the computer I built only scores 5.0/5.9 on the little Vista test scale, but runs 64-bit Vista with no problems.

From my professional IT experience, Vista is a resource hog, driver compatibility issues, application compatibility issues (NEED VISTA VERSIONS), and many bugs. XP is still the top choice.

Problems with MACs, although very good computers, is that you do not have a wide range compatibility of devices, applications, and choices period. They are not for the typical home user but specialized for that matter. Linux, PC based OS is similar, I've tried at least 5 different Linux distros and application support and selection is just terrible. I love the security and stability of MACs but love the versatility of Windows. To me it doesn't matter, I can fix PCs all day long not afraid of anything blue screens, error beeps, etc. Funny thing is now that MACs are running Intel chips right?

Macs are easy to learn, but I hate the fact that its not organized the way you want it to be. Plus I hate the stupid 1 click button. I need my 2nd click and many of my *cough programs dont work on a mac.

Your average joe-computer-user doesnt want to buy a high end gaming system. The average user wants to walk in to a store, pick a computer, and have it work well. Vista isn't an appropriate OS to have for those systems, but you dont have a choice. The great thing with XP is that it runs on next to nothing. Vista essentially requires that you have a high end expensive system to function decently. Hell, my old work dropped 3K on a system to monitor our switches (needed to spend our budget). We ran vista 32 and 64 bit and they both scored terrible.... on a xeon processor and 6gb of DDR3 RAM.

My 1.6ghz atom netbook runs 7 flawlessly, and scores high on the scale as well.

What kind of IT professional are you?
When was the last time you tried Linux?

I don't really understand what you would be missing in terms of apps. Sure, Linux is not a gamers OS, but neither is the Mac. But besides that, anything that you can do on a windows or mac machine, you can do on a linux system.

I use linux on a daily basis, and never felt like I was missing anything. Firefox is there, I can check email, I use open office, edit photos, etc...etc...

The great thing about linux apps is that there is no bloatware to them. Sure, windows has a huge selection of shareware, but its all bloated down with nagging requests to register, or apps that try to autolaunch on their own and hide in your system try. Linux on the other hand has zero of that. Everything is free, lightweight, and fast.

The only app that I can think of that linux is missing, would probably be Photoshop, but thats just a matter of adobe getting up off their ass and realizing their customers want linux support.
