so i've found the 4runner i've been looking for after months of searching. 94 22re 4x4 5speed if u wanted to know (also has AC roof rack and can tow)
The seller first posted an ad on craigslist for 4500, which I can't afford. At the end of his ad he stated that the price is firm, no offers. Well he ended up putting it on ebay and the auction just ended today with no bids. His price on ebay was 4400. KBB lists it at 3800 excellent and 3200 good. His 4runner is good condition but has rebuilt engine due to timing belt breaking. Any opinions on what its really worth? My question is what would be a good offer now that he seems to be budging somewhat. I was thinking 3500-3800. I'm also worried about someone else offering more and taking it first Any input appreciated, Travis |

Go test drive it. talk to the guy and get a feel for his political alignment. go off on tangent even if its not really your view. offer him 3000 and blame the low amount on on whatever opposing political party that you can. (its early and im still working on my first cup)

How many miles are on it? Those are driven by a timing chain, and I don't know how it would break. The 22re is a pretty bullet-proof motor, my Toyota 1-ton with the 22re was a badass even at almost 300k. The only problem with them is the chain will eat through the timing guides, and then will eat through the timing cover which will cause the water pump to pump coolant straight into the oil pan. So I would definitely check the oil to make sure it's not all milky or anything, just because they rebuilt/replaced the chain doesn't mean they replaced all the other stuff. (A chain kit with cover, oil pump, water pump, guides, sprockets etc is only about $150 on ebay if you do need it).

its got 170k on the chassis, with 16k on the rebuilt engine. I asked them about the what happened and he told me the water pump was replaced BEFORE the engine broke, so i'm assuming it's not the usual timing guide failure. When I test drive it i'll definitely check the oil and coolant for mixing. If the timing chain is the culprit, is there anything I should look for in his receipts as far as what was replaced and what is still original?
How do you feel about his price and my offer? Is he asking too much or am I thinking about offering too little? Thanks |

My Advice. Find an 85 - 89 4Runner. They are way better built than 90's up. Has a Removable Top. Go for the SR-5 and get Bucket seats. both 4cyl and 6cyl are bulletproof

I used to own a '91 4 runner with every package thrown on (sport, towing, had the spare tire on the tailgate, running boards, etc.) It was a 3.0 V6 22RE block. Let me tell you, that care was BULLET PROOF. I literally slid down hill (on black ice) at about 15mph into the front of a Honda Odyssey, the 4 runner (or Betty as I called her) took out the radiator, front headlight, hood, and other internals. Betty however had a tiny dent...
Now the bad news is that you'll only get 14mpg around town (12mpg now that the Govt. thought it was a good idea to add Ethanol to our fuel... asshats). The good news is that on a trip to LA (HWY 5) I was getting 24mpg with 2 passengers and a lot of weight (as in moving back a friend from college). I ended up selling betty with 165k, an auto transmission that was dying, a 12in sub, alpine deck, infinity speakers, new suspension, new bidgestone duellers, new rotors, new pads, new oil change, freshly rebuilt engine at 135k, and a new windshield for $2900. That in turn went into the down payment on my celi (bought from a dealership). So basically, I think 4500 is WAY overpriced. 4runners are everywhere. Keep searching CL and you'll find a great one. -TC -------------------- Live your life for yourself. Don't hold back for anything or anyone.

you're referring to a V6 which is quite common, i'm interested in a 4cyl 22re only. They aren't so common for this generation. I'm starting to think 4400 is way overpriced anyhow even for a newly rebuilt engine.
I dont' like how the 1st gens looked 85-89, just not my style. Wish I did cause I see a lot more of them for sale. I did find another one pop up today, 198k for 2k firm. Gonna go test drive tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens. |

I would definitely say to go for the one for 2k even though it has a few more miles. Even if it needs some work, that's still a heck of a better deal. -------------------- 1999 Celica GT
