So I was planning on doing another 5sfte set-up, but thought why not just go about doing a 5sgte set-up.
I don't plan on running an EMS anytime soon. Although down the road its obvious that I will have to. The plan is to buy a complete 3rd gen 3sge motor. Thats right a 3sge motor. The plan is to just take the head and all the electronics and TRY to sell the block. I already have turbo parts, minus the turbo. I will run with the 3sge ecu, but with the emanage ultimate. Injectors since the 3sge is side feed, I will probably go with 540s. Not sure what injectors the 3rd gen 3sge uses. I have been in contact with MCS and I will be probably be getting a crank that has already been turned down to accept the stock 3sgte rods I am using. The cost of their crank is 300, but I am in the process of shopping around to see if its cheaper to machine down the crank I have out of the 94 block. The plus side to MCS is the fact that they use 98+ cranks only. I will have the wiring harness converted for me by Doc. I did originally plan to build the bottom end with the following parts and get the 5sfe cams regrind from Geoff at Colt Cams for $400, oversized valves from a 2jz and do the head up. To be honest the machining is the thing that makes both plans pricey. I DO want to build a 5sfTe beast, but at the same time Just think of having a 5sgte. What do you guys think I should do. I'm going to be honest, I have been researching day and night for the past week. Not going to bed until 4AM and the first thing I do when I wake up is log onto the internet. Lets make this final and end my dilemma. -Will This post has been edited by bccentaur3: Feb 19, 2009 - 11:14 PM -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

about those supra valves? are they the stock 2jz sized valves?

I don't think I can run 2jz valves on the 1st gen 3sgte. The valvetrain is completely different from all the 3sgte motors. I believe you can run them on the 5s head. I'm not sure.

so the 1st gen 3sgte head may be the most easy head upgrade for the 5s?
Can't wait to see how this pans out... makes alot of sense to head this route IMO, more work but it seems like if everything is properly sourced a monster can be built relatively cheaply ![]() |

hahaha you just said CHEAP. Nothing about this build is cheap, unless you're talking about all the labor I'm doing.
About the 1st gen head being easier, I honestly think that all 3s heads have the same degree of difficulty. It all depends on the block, if its got coolant channels that match right up or not. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Pics from the work done today.
3sgte block ![]() Look at the coolant passages. Theres a lot more on the 3sgte. I had my dad help with the drilling. ![]() ![]() ![]() 3 drill bits later and we get this ![]() ![]() The block is drilled. 14 holes were drilled. You need to drill a little over 1/2" deep into the block. I have yet to deburr the block to make the passages bigger. I will more than likely buy the burr kit tomorrow to do some more work. Got a little more work done. I got one cylinder done so far with the burring. Lots of work and I think I inhaled a little too much cast iron.

So after hours of dremeling and thanks to my dad for drilling to holes for me to start off with this is the final product.
MCS has finally shipped the crank and I will have the block to the machinist by the end of this week. ![]() -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Update:
picked up a 1st gen 3sge intake manifold at the picknpull for $14. This manifold will work perfect with the fmic set-up. No pipe running over the valve cover woot!!! I was really lucky, I got there with 30 minutes left and found the st162 with 15 minutes left. Took me and my buddy all of 15 minutes to get the manifold off. But I'm going back to get the cam shafts, since it is an upgrade for the 1st gen 3sgte head. Money is pretty slow right now, so I'm waiting until next week to FINALLY bring the block to the machine shop. Once I get the block back I will assemble it and post some more pics. I didn't want to post the pic of the intake manifold because its filled with nastyness. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer
