There's this guy selling a tranny for my 5SFE right where I live for about $200 with only 50,000 miles on it. (Is that a good deal?) The tranny came off a JDM engine, I beleive it was a celica also. I was just wondering if the JDM tranny would be compatible with the clutch kit and flywheels over here? The reason I am trying to get hold of a tranny, is because my 3rd gear is grinding like CRAZY. I tried the synchromesh fluid like everyone else on hear, but unfortunately, my results didn't come out as good as everyone elses did. My synchro in third gear shot, and now I drive with out a third gear (for the majority of the time). Please let me know if I would be able to use this tranny on my engine as I would be very happy if it does work.
Thanks to the 6gc community in advanced for the help, Ryan EDIT: Here are some pics of the tranny. I checked it out, and it seems to be the correct one. I don't know if you guys can tell if it's the right one just by looking at it, but here you go. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I know it's very dirty, but I'm gonna use some HEAVY degreaser and clean it up. Any certain way I should attempt to try and clean it, or just some Purple Power and a pressure washer will do???? This post has been edited by str8thugginit4ya: Sep 10, 2009 - 9:20 AM |

Depends on the tranny. "Came off of a JDM celica" is waaaayyy too vague of a description to determine whether it'll work. That said... just cause it's 'JDM' doesn't make it radically different or better or anything... so assuming it's the same tranny... yeah... USDM stuff will work on it.

I will call him and find out which exact engine it came off of. But the description of the tranny said that it would work on any 5SFE. I was just trying to avoid "bumping my head" if the tranny didn't work on my car. I'll post up the engine it came off as soon as I get a chance. Thanks, Ryan |

He said that the 3SGTE engine came with stronger tranny's so that's good. I just REALLY need to know if this tranny would work on my car. |

well if it came off a 3S-GTE celica usally means its a AWD tranny so I dont think it'll fit, unless your doing a AWD conversion???

two possibilities......
1. if its an original JDM box its four wheel drive... and it will fit but pItA as you got transfer case for rear tailshaft..... 2. e153 MR2/camry..... identicle box theoretically to the alltrac one just without the transfer case.... short answer..... the e153 box will bolt to the 5sfe..... as i have bolted the 5sfe gearbox to the e153 engine...IE..3vzfe..3sgte in mr2 use the exact same box.... so if the engine it came off was in an MR2, grab it...it will fit..... if it was from a celica and is 4WD... then its gonna be a pain in the ass to put in......IMO... but it will go in.... changing gearbox means changing, driveshafts, mounts, speedo sensor, linkage cables and shifter, etc etc.... -------------------- st184 3vz-fe convesrion complete

Okay, I talked to the guy and he said it came off of a Celica, a UK Celica. BUT, it wasn't a 3SGTE it was a 3SGE, and he clarified that it is a FWD tranny. Is this correct, or is this guy just messing with me??? Need assistance ASAP, I'm going to see him today! |

3S-GE uses the same S54 but with closer ratios -- Sometimes even with front lsd.
You may find that your gears have slightly lower top speeds. Just get some real information. What car exactly, if the gearbox model number is unknown, someone will be able to tell you exactly based on what the car was, (year, engine, car model, country of origin or even simply just the chassis code) If it was a Celica or MR2 or Camry or any car with an S series or related engine it will work, If it was from a GT4 (gearbox E154F) then as someone mentions you'll have to do something about that rear drive shaft. -------------------- Mike W

WHAT? So that mean I'll be losing some MPG's???? What the hell? I mean, I don't really care for the top speeds, will this be a big impact on my MPG? But yea, if it comes with the LSD that's good right? |

That transmission looks like it's been sitting outside for a very very long time. All of the rust and corrosion on there makes me think you need to look elsewhere for your transmission.

Looks like an s54 to me. Take a picture of the passenger side axle sleeve opposite of the tulip. I would like to see down in the transaxle to see if its locking or open. If its locking I could be interested.
EDIT: I agree it does look like it has been sitting out for a while and with no gear oil in the transaxle it likely it could have started to rust as well. This post has been edited by turnip: Sep 10, 2009 - 12:15 PM |

I would pass on that thing. It looks like its been sitting for a while and could have issues.
From the electrical connector on there... id say that this is a 4th gen celica trans (st162). Those came with a 3sge engine (not the cool beams you might be thinking of) and are generally not anything special or jdm. Just an old rusty tranny from the 80s. This is not the e153 mr2 trans, not an awd trans, and it doesn't have lsd. This post has been edited by lagos: Sep 10, 2009 - 12:50 PM -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

All of the orange marks on the internals of the tranny aren't actually rust issues. I don't exactly know what it is, but I could wipe it off with my finger. Plus, the tranny was sitting with the internals facing down, so I don't think it would be rusted. would it??? The only REAL rust that I can see, is from the "tulip" and on the external of the tranny. He told me that the tranny has about 70,000 miles on it. Does it still sound like a good buy if I could get it for $125??? I'm putting it in myself (My brother and I) so there's no labor cost or anything like that.

I think I'll just stick with my gear grinding tranny for now. Maybe I'll just have to do an upgrade for the whole engine and tranny....I'm thinking 3SGTE, but that's long after I've saved up enough money. Thanks again for the help guys, this community rocks!!! |

I just got so hyped off of the price! I might go and look for the Solara V6. My brother was telling me that that's a stronger tranny as well, but very scarce to find. |
