i got my first rallyx school in my celica in about a month. I am sooo excited. did u make your mudflaps or buy them? swissferdi is partially correct. the mudflaps are made out of ikea cutting boards. for $5 you can make ones for all 4 corners of the car. they've held up for almost a year and the only time i broke one was when i went to montana for christmas last year and one had a chunk break off at -15 degrees (cold and plastic aren't great friends). they work well for $5 and look ok and i figure its a cheap alternative to spending around $70 for real rally mudflaps. Sweeettt budget racing at it's best right there. Ikea Cutting boards??? Did u just bolt them in the same spots as the factory mud claps? And one more question: What's the wear-n-tear been like on the car? Like are you breaking or replacing stuff every race? -------------------- 95 Celica ST (currently in Motorsport Purgatory)

Like are you breaking or replacing stuff every race? there were some spots where the fender liners hook onto the fenders that you'll be able to use to attach themi highly recommend using cardboard templates to figure out the mounting on one side, then you will be able to mirror that for the other side. that way they will look straight. here is what they are: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90131935 as far as wear and tear, the car has been a champ. i haven't had to replace anything on it due to rallyx and when i've done the alignments (i do them myself at the dealership i work at) the car isn't that far off on the alignment angles. the car surprised the hell out of me the first time i drove it in competition. left foot braking is very effective with this car. i'm running bf goodrich traction t/a tires and they work very well as well as keep me in the street stock class, not to mention they are also reasonably priced. let me know if you have any more questions i can help you with. awesome! thanks alot! I'm currently trying to see if the head tech will let me run stock class, even though i have very light mods. (rear strut bar, shifter, cone filter) They are usually pretty lenient whenever I go to an event, because they just want to have a good time, but I shot the head tech an email just incase. I was thinking more towards studless winter tires. Do you think the Traction T/A's are a better choice? it depends on what class you get put in, but seriously, the traction t/a's are a great all around choice. they are not that expensive, provide way better traction than a normal summer performance tire, and yield good tread life for daily driving. for me, if i ran winter tires, i would be in the modified class and i would have a real hard time staying up in points in competition, so i stay in the stock class for now. to be honest, you will be able to get the rear to rotate around easily on the stock suspension without the strut tower bars. i have a front strut tower bar and a rear bar set up for a racing seat belt harness that connects the rear strut towers, so its basically acting as a strut tower bar. i take these off before the rallyx and run completely stock. if you can do the scandinavian flick and left foot brake, you will find that this car is actually pretty good in the dirt. i found that i don't need to use the e brake, that left foot braking works as good if not better than the e brake while in the dirt. 90% of the time i'm keeping the gas pedal pinned to the floor and tapping the brake with my left foot to get the rear to come around. works great. if i were you, i would take out the strut bar and try it out. i would also give rallyx a try before buying tires. this way you get a chance to see if it is something you really want to do before you start spending money, and second it gives you a chance to see how much tires will help you when you upgrade later. |

How often are the meets? let me ask my network of rally cross peeps about the ohio region. this event was rough on the car. the first day wasn't too bad, but they made the mistake or running in reverse order, which is not a usual thing. by this i mean that they usually run the stock class guys first in the day and then the rally class (cars with rally tires). on the second day they had the rally 4 wheel drive guys run first and we were last in the stock 2wd. by the time we got on the course the second day, the course had been torn up pretty good. my first run of the second day i knocked my skidplate loose to where only one bolt was holding it on. i took it completely off between runs and got back in there. i already knew my driver's side axle was on its way out, but after the beating it took this past weekend, i HAVE to replace it soon. sounds like someones hitting it with a hammer when i'm going slow and turning. my lap times reflect how nervous i was knowing i had no skidplate and a fubared axle. at least i pulled off 2nd for the series championship in my class. this event was quite a bit different in terms of layout of the course. normally its in a pretty flat course with maybe a couple dips/mini jumps. this was on the side of a hill at an off road vehicle park. it was really fun to drive since it was different for us. the other normal courses are not that hard on the car though. now i just need to get springs that aren't sagged to hell and hopefully lift the car a little higher. ohio region scca rallyx website http://www.ovr-scca.org/_rallycross/rallycrosshome.asp |
