Have you replaced the modulator? Have you reset the codes yet to see if it comes back?

Of the two major parts related to the EGR system (modulator and valve) the modulator is by far the cheaper one to replace. I would replace it and also remove the valve, give it a good cleaning with a pipe cleaner and some carb cleaner.

hopefully the modulator will work, i ordered it yesterday and hopefully it will be here soon, but if that wont solve it i will take off the valve and clean it out, but that damn valve is epensive!!

When my EGR threw a CEL, it never went off, so I don't know what's up.

My CEL had been on and off for the last few weeks, code 71, egr. The odd part was, for the beginning of the time that the light would come on, it would literally flash at me, stayed on for 3 seconds and went off, as time progressed i noticed that the light only came on when my gas tank was full and between 3/4 tank, then there would be no light activity thereafter, until the next fill up.

Weird coincidence? or does the gas tank level have something to do with that?

Anyway, now, more recently, the light has been on constantly, every now and then it will turn off itself, but it soon comes back.

I dont have the money to go guessing at the EGR system, and since it isnt bothering anything as of now, im not gonna fix it. BUT i am curious how the gas tank levels affect this!

Also, i thought (from what i have read) the CEL system was designed to check only every x miles on the performance of the car?? Why would it think it has a problem and then in 3 seconds to a few minutes decide everything is ok??

interesting progress of this thread...

I still have a 401 fault for egr flow insufficient...and I've already replaced the valve and modulator and the VSV was replaced just before I got the car(from a coworker)...

another mentioned the charcoal canister could be the cause, as it turned out to be the problem for his egr on his Firebird.
