I'm about to change the engine oil on my 1.8 7A-FE. What kind of oil should I use? As mentioned in the topic title the car have driven 142K miles, or 226K Km.
On Castrols website I used their oil guide (http://ew5.earlweb.com/recommendations.php?site=71§or=1&category=6&subset=278&modelyear=&vehicle=7964), and it says that I should use 5W/40, but since the engine isn't new I have heard someone say that 10W/40 is better? Btw it's winter here in Denmark (Scandinavia) right now it's around -10 Celcius, and it is probably getting worse. Which oil should I get? in my opinion i would use the 5w, just because of the cold. when you start your car when its cold with a heavy wheight oil, its hard on your engine because the oil is cold and has no viscosity( or doesnt want to flow). my car has 350,000 miles on it and in the summer i use 10w 30 and the winter 5w 30. not once have i had a probleme yet.

Do you still have the original engine in it? |

I'm thinking about swapping mine out in the spring when I do my manual swap, but I'm not exactly sure. It burns a little bit of oil when i floor it, but it's not that bad at all. Still runs strong at 218k, but I'm just iffy cause I'm going to college next year and I'll be doing a lot of traveling my next 4 years.
On topic though, definitely go with the 5w if it is that cold. It will be better when you're first starting her up |

cold weather and a heavy weight oil is bad news my friend. when your car sits for a long period of time (like wen u wake up from sleeping) and go to start your car, keep in mind all your oil drains to the pan no matter what oil. heavier oil takes longer to work its way thru the motor and thinner oil is faster when you start your car.

I think I'm gonna go with 5/40W since it's winter but I found out that it runs with 5/40W now, but since that oil was put in it uses alot more. So it's going to be 10/40W when it's summer I think.
