just a few days ago my car started dying while i drive. I didnt drive it for a while because my radiator was leaking so this problem came out of nowhere. I should note that before i parked it because of the radiator leak, my battery died because i left the headlights on. ive killed my battery about 4 times before this because of the same reason. Do you guys think that the culprit is the battery? The car idles fine btw. It only dies when i'm driving

Sounds like you have a bad alternator.

When you say it dies when you're driving, does it only happen when the engine is being revved freely? or only when the engine is under load or during acceleration?

I hope its just that. If my alternator was bad though would it still idle fine? And is the 5SFE alternator the same as the GT-fours?

I tried driving a bit to see how it was dying but, sometimes it dies when im coming to a stop and sometimes it just dies when im braking slowing down. One time it also died when i was still on the gas. The engine is never revved past 3500

Use a voltmeter/multimeter to check voltage while the car is running to test alternator. Should read 14V+. Then when you turn the car off the battery should read 12.5V+.

Did you ever get to fix it? Or is it still like that?

I tested the car after 10 minutes of idle including Erving it to 3k before I tested. It read 13.5 running and 12.3 off. So I don't know if that's it.

Sounds like alternator and battery are on their way out. Would also check your grounds. Could try cleaning your battery posts and terminals.

battery looks clean as a whistle. and it readds normal i think.. just read it again this morning while off and it was 12.4. If it was the alternator, would'nt it show other symptoms before it actually gets to the point where your car shuts off while driving?. or it doesnt matter?. i mean i idle fine.

update:

Checked my intake sensor wasnt dirty. Still havent checked my manifold sensor and the manifold itself. My mechanic friend said it could be dirty and causing my car to stall.. can anyone confirm this?

All good batteries I've had read 12.6V. 12.4V is good enough though. 13.5V on the alternator is low though.

The alternator charges your battery whilst you drive. So if it's not working, or not working it's best, soon your battery will just be flat and you won't be able to start it.

It happened to me before. My battery terminals were all corroded, than the car finally died when the ignition coil went.
Maybe check your air filter, than possibly your distributer cap/leads?

The batteries I've had in the past, once they went dead once they were done for. I could recharge them but they would go flat quickly. Your battery might be the culprit. I would also suspect a potential fueling or spark issue, as the car might be flooding itself out under load or something similar.

i had a similar issue with mine when i first picked my car up in vancouver. it would idle fine but would hesitate in gear under load so i kept my foot light on the throttle the whole way until i got home. i was worried that i received a 'lemon'. but all it needed was new spark plugs and then the car was able to rev to redline. and boy my first time experiencing that really put a nice big smile on my face biggrin.gif

but first, i'd test the spark plug wires with a multimeter or ohmmeter for resistance just to be sure. if they're above 25 kilo-ohms, then there's your problem because there's too much resistance to transmit the spark to the plugs. if the wires are ok, then try replacing the plugs.

mine doesnt hesitate in gear when i press the gas at all.. It revs to 3k with no problems.. it just dies out of nowhere frown.gif . But ill definitely try what you just said. Thanks man

Idk if it'll help any but my 90gt an 94st (very rare on the st). Had a similar problem .
The 90gt would randomly die while setting at stoplights or when coasting to a stop an on a few rare times when I was just slowing down to the intown speed limit. It ended up being a bad ignition module.
The 94st did the same thing a few times too but never tried to figure out what it was

k it was raining ass all day yesterday so i have to try the rest tomorrow. Ive pretty much narrowed it down to at least 3 things for now. Dirty manifold, ignition module or spark plug wires or spark plugs. One question. Is the ignition module on the ST202 the same as the ST205?

the ignition coil is the same for ST205/ST204/ST202, but different for AT200.
