Wow, good find. They actually have a lot of stuff for the 7a, but dissapointingly, most of it is OE replacement parts. The rods and the cams for the 7a are all stock parts.
I'm excited about their engine rebuild kits, thats going to save me a lot of time sourcing parts and buying stuff from toyota. |

As far as I know, you'd need to have custom forged pistons made for the vehicle. Crower, J&E, or Wiseco should be able to help you... If there is an off-the-shelf option, I hope someone informs us both.

i'm sure 90% of you know this by now, but when i talked to raeeng.com about custom forged rods to fit some 4a-gze pistons, they quoted me $700 just for the rods. i even sent them one of my old rods to see if any of there existing stock could be modified or machined to work but they had nothing. so if your looking to get a piston/rod combo, you will probably be looking at $1100 not to mention the rebuild kit and new rings/ bearings that your going to need. well worth it in the long run of forced induction but it will hurt at the time of transaction.

Yup, $1100 sounds about right. I'm keeping the stock rods, working them over and getting pistons made. I think I'm going to have Arias make my pistons. You really shouldn't need rods unless you're running INSANE boost (~20psi) or spinning the engine faster. I'm going to have my stock rods magnafluxed, beam polished, and shot peened and they should be able to take anything I can throw at them.

how much will that cost to do all that machining on the rods? also, do you recommend performance rod/main bearings and those toga performance rings with medium boost pressures (like 8-12 psi)?

I know this has been asked before, but on that site there's a turbo kit for the 7afe 'rolla. Quite some big gains on that, and the price is pretty damn nice IMO. What changes need to be made from that one to fit on ours?

Have you thought of having your rods cryogenically treated? Supposedly, it makes a HUGE difference strength wise. I read about a turbo engine: It needed a new turbo every six runs. After they treated all the turbo's parts, it made over a hundred runs with no problems. |

i believe you will need a custom down pipe, and you may run into problems with the length on the oil lines and such. you would be better off just buy that turbo seperate (if that's the one you really want) and round up the other parts through jgstools.com, ebay, and performance import sites. that method will also save you money as well. if you look at the list of items that comes with the turbo kit, it doesn't quite come with everything you need.
can someone post a link to that page that has a basic list of items for a custom turbo setup? thanks |

I don't know the cost, its not outrageous, call your local performance machine shop. Yes, get the better bearings and rings.
I've done a lot of research on this for other things. Its merits are quite debateable. Some people say it works, some people say it doesn't. It doesn't seem to hurt, but doesnt' always help either. It does not increase strength. That is a property of the material itself which doesn't change. Shotpeening is very similar (but also very proven) in that it helps decrease the chances of failure by reducing or nearly eliminating stress risers, stress concentrations, and surface imperfections which can lead to crack formation and premature fatigue failure.
That really sucks. Making a new downpipe is no big deal, but sourcing all the BS little parts you need is a total PITA. Thats all thats holding me up at this point. I have all the big stuff. Just trying to round up all the little BS stuff. |
