Im new to the celica world, so i need your expertise. I jus bought a coilover kit on ebay, and I figure I might as well replace the struts with new ones. My driving style is back and forth to work with some spirited turning when I run into some nice curves. I basically need to know what a good strut would be. I want to keep the price under 400, and will proabally do the install myself. Any advice? Also why do all 4 struts have 4 different part numbers?

I have been told tha KYB makes good struts but since I don't know from personal experience I can't give a good review.

I was under the impression coilovers were a strut and spring in a single piece... but they're out of my price range so I haven't done much research.

Its a coilover kit on ebay.. about 75 bucks including shipping. You have to remove your stock springs to replace them with the springs in the kit.

I was under the impression that coilovers are just the spring and the strut is thing that holds the shocks and where the spring sits.

personally, i wouldn't have gone with a kit off of ebay...

if you want good, inexpensive struts/shocks...go with the KYB GR2's...

they've been great for me so far...

KYB GR2 are basically OEM replacements
Koni yellows are the shiZ, but require some welding
GAB struts don't require any modification but you sure as hell won't find them for under $400.....

I just installed the KYB GR2s myself this weekend. Pretty good strut, and a little better than stock in my opinion. If you use it for going to and from work like me, that's pretty much the way to go. I'd recommend buying all the strut mounts as well (the front mounts come with bearings, the rears don't need them) new dust boots, (kybs come with an integrated bumper). If you buy from tire rack, you can get the boots (all four), two rear struts, two rear mounts, and two front cartridges. You'll have to get the other mounts from someone like Advance Auto (they carry the kyb front mounts) With pneumatic tools and a lift, this job still took me around 7 hours since it was my first time. I disconnected my brake hoses to get the struts out easier, so you gotta bleed the brakes, too. Good luck.

The Konis shouldn't require any welding.

They do require that the rear struts be drilled and cut so that the Koni insert can be installed. It's something that's pretty straightforward (a little messy though) and explained fully by Koni. Almost any good shop could install them for you, if you don't have the tools to do it yourself.

Why did you bleed your breaks? You didn't have to do that? All you had to do was unscrew the breakline from the mount, and that's it. Then just slide your strut from the knuckle. biggrin.gif

when you take loose a break line you need to bleed it to get out any air that got in.

You don't have to bleed it unless you disconnect the brake line from the caliper or open up the brake line in some way. Which is what I think that he meant that he did.

Bcus when I did my suspension (GC's) we didn't do anything but unscrew the brakeline and we didn't bleed my brakes.

Bcus when I did my suspension (GC's) we didn't do anything but unscrew the brakeline and we didn't bleed my brakes.

I haven't looked at the celica, but on other cars, I have used a hacksaw to cut a slot in the brake line tab on the strut just wide enough to get the line out so I didnt have to open the brake system, makes things much easier...just be careful to NOT cut or damage the brake line.
