Ok to my understanding i will need a stand alone ecu in order to make a 3rd gen 3sgte pass emissions in the states. Now i dont know exactly what this entails. If someone could explain this to me that would be great. What all goes into a stand alone ecu, how will this effect the engine itself. And are there any other routes that i should consider. Thanks for your time.

I think you need to research more...I don't think the 3rd gen is as simple as getting a Stand Alone.

Well this is what i was told by a mechanic who worked at an mr2 specialty shop. He told me that in order to pass emissions i would be using a stand alone ecu. He didnt go into much detail but thats what he said. They did lots of work with the 3sgte.

Well the 3rd gen along with every other JDM motor doesnt have an EGR. Which basically recirculates exhaust until its less toxic. I dont kno what the ecu has to do with it but im sure something.
A standalone is going to cost you quite a bit. Around 800 - 1200. If your going to go stand alone I would research its other uses. Such as remapping for 93 octane or 91 depending on ur location. A/F ratios and what not. -------------------- |

It may make things a little bit easier, but your still going to need to wire other stuff, or the mechanic will. But undoubtedly u'll be better of with the stand alone, if u have the cash.

what exactly does a stand alone mean. Just that it is fabricated for my situation or somethingelse. I appreciate your assitance so far. Im trying to get all my funding in order. Im trying to decide wether a 3rd gen is worth it or if i should just go for the 2nd gen. I would realy like to get 3rd though, so any info or refrences you can point me too about the 3rd gen would be very helpful.

The 3rd gen is a nicer engine, however it was never in the US, so your mechanic wont know much about it, and aftermarket support is slim to none. The 2nd Gen is just as capable IMO. The 3rd gen is stock 12psi and the 2nd Gen is 8. Basically why theres a difference in HP.
A stand alone ecu completely replaces the existing ecu. These can be programmed and changed using a laptop and are quite useful, if not necessary for increase performance. I dont even think u'd be able to find a stand alone made for the 3rd gen 3sgte. With this you would not have annoyances like speed cut, boost cut, and rev limiter. Unless you wanted to. -------------------- |
