I just read on toysport that they used a jdm 3sge tranny for the 3gen 3sgte swap they did.
Do you guys know if this tranny bolts on just like a 5sfe tranny would ? Yes I know if I do the swap I have to changer my motor/tranny mounts.
Seeing that the 3sge has better gearing ..I was wondering how hard it would be to get ahold of this trans.

do you guys know of any shop that sell the 3sge tranny ? I'm gonna call toysport and see if they can get me one. I'm buying my 3sgte this week or next week so the tranny will follow that soon.

Its either a 3sge or buying a 5sfe tranny rebuilding it and adding LSD.
Please help me find a 3sge tranny And tell me if I should just stick with the 5sfe rebuild or try to source a 3sge trans.

Edit: sorry if this was covered already....

Thanks guys,
DEF

Should just bolt on. However I had a 3S-GE on my '86 and I don't remember the gearing being much if at all better.

I am not an expert on this but I thought you should see this thread before you buy a tranny from a celica with a 3sge motor. As you will see from the thread, a member was trying to sell a tranny from a curren a few months ago. At least one post indicated the tranny was a "S-54" which is the same code given to the U.S. GT tranny. According to Kuya1284, the Toyota "E" series trannies are much stronger than the "S" series trannies. MANY people have had problems with the GT tranny when swapping the 3sgte. I do not know but I suspect if the tranny code is S-54, similar problems could occur.

Current Tranny for Sale Thread

Bottom line: I am swapping and using the MR2T E-153 tranny. Hope it helps.

Jay.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

See the trouble I'm having is locating the e153. I'm not sure, I dont want get involved in swapping tranny parts. What I'm interested in is the fact that the final gear ratio is defferent. Giving the user a higher top speed.

or can I just take a 5sfe to a trans shop have them beef up the tranny, add lsd, and change the ratios ? Is that possible to have the ratios changed? If it is , will it cost me thousands of dollars to do it ?

thses are some of the things I need to know about the trannys. which tranny is going to be the best bang for my buck?

thanks

try www.mr2oc.com and www.car-part.com. You should be able to find a used one without LSD for as little as $500. You can buy them new from Toyota for about $1500 with LSD and $1100 without.

Firstly let me just say that the 3SGE tranny cannot really hold better on the 3SGTE engine swap. I know a few people in my country that had to replace it.

I believe that the MR2 tranny would be the best for really handling the power of the 3SGTE.

I just helped a friend complete his swap and we had to custom make a mount for the MR2 tranny conversion. This took us all day long in my fully equipped cnc machine shop. It was tough but we did it and I'm sure there was probably a better way than handmaking a custom mount. The good news is the new mount works great and we have had no problems with it so far. Knock on wood...
Good luck.

My mechanic told me that a custom mount was required as well.

was that 3s-ge tranny rebuilt? how many miles was on it? how good of a driver was your friend or the other people? did he use a LSD? i don't argue the fact that the mr-2 tranny's have a greater power threashold, but i don't think the correct s54 tranny in good shape should be counted out as a reliable option for the
3s-gte. people are always going to be inclined to use what they have laying around, even if it's an s54 with 125,000 plus miles on it.

just throwing it out there for discussion...
