Lately i have been hearing about being able to shift gears with out using the clutch, there is a certin rpm or somethin u can do it at. when i first heard this, i said bull**** and didn't think about it, but i've heard 2-3 more people mention this, anyone heard anything about it, is it possible with our cars?

It is possible but why would you want to do that to your car? Even if it was to prove a point. I have done it before in other cars but I love my car to much to do it.

It is possible, but by the time you find out the point where its good at on your car.. you prolly already screwed somthing up.. not worth it..

Once I totalled the Audi, I did this while I was just driving it around with the frame damage and everything...it seemed to work well in that car at moderate(probably about 50%) throttle position when I shifted from whatever gear at 4,000 RPM. That said, it didn't feel like it was good for the car, and was slow, and you couldn't do it at full throttle, and if you tried to do it fast stuff would grind...there was really no point to doing it, and I'd never do it in my Celica.

Yea, its perfectably acceptable - if you have a Ferrari or Maserati with the F1 transmission. Otherwise, its not very smart.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

at a certain rpm range the shift gates open up. To shift with out the clutch just accelerate as normal after about 3500 (my celica) release the gas but keep about 10% on the gas. and move the stick from one gear to the other. my dad does this with no problem. When he was teaching me how to drive a stick he would do this on my car with no problem. funny story is he was doing it while toying with a 7th gen smile.gif on a small curvy road he would go from 2nd to 5th with no clutch and then slow it down there was no grinding or cracking heard. just smooth shifting. basically if done correctly it improves shifting between gears but it takes a lot of practice (and trannys)

There's a company who produces Sequential Shifters . It does exactly what you just said, but without harming your tranny.

It's mostly use in drag racing.

Sequential Shifters

There are also Sequential Trasnmissions out there, but are only available for certain applications.

You put the clutch in again to move the car from neutral into the lower gear though, right?

I do that sometimes...I really need to learn to heel-toe brake once I can get a wider gas pedal.

For match rev downshifting you start for example in 4th, put and keep clutch in, go into 3rd, rev up the engine, let out the clutch. If done right you wont get it to jerk. I use heel-toe in my daily driving now becuase it saves the brakes from a bit more use. The engine does like RPM's so there is no real danger of harming the engine.

I just downshift and slowly let off the clutch..the car doesn't jerk or anything..I use that instead of brakes a lot.

I use breaks all the time. I drive so fast into the turn that i use the break and then rev match to down shift.

Heel-toe would be ideal for me but we need wider pedals

Just to let you know that wears down you clutch disk like no other. If you don't want to change your clutch every 25,000-30,000 miles I would suggest the match rev method.

^^^^^ Heal-Toe... You use your right foot for gas and brake at the same time heal on brake and toe for the gas. You kinda have to find a position that is comfortable for you and can reach both pedals at the same time. And by the way latinkraze I don't know if its just my big feet but I don't have a problem with our pedals, its kinda hard to get used to and awkward at first but its fun smile.gif

oh like when your goin down a hill and you can do that instead of having the engine jumping up to 5k rpms. i do that somewhat, i usually just start to slow down awhile back before the light or stop sign and then just downshift from like 4th to 3rd when i get to around 30mph then do the start to brake alittle and put the clutch in as i brake the go into second and then just put the clutch in again and use the brakes till i stop then go into 1st and all....

bah im just rambling on, thx anub and latin for answerin my question tho

Yea. Or, better yet, just use your brakes. They are designed as wear parts to slow you down.
