what's up guys, I'm planning on having my car repainted by the end of august and I'm gonna be doing a pretty extreme paint job. I want to paint it kandy red with two layers of metalflake. So I'd spray a silver base, then metal flake, then kandy red, then metalflake, and then my final clear. My idea is to have two layers of metalflake, one under the red kandy, and one over it, that way it's got red sparkles and silver ones. I'll be using House of Kolor paints.
Anybody with paint experience see any problems with doing that? thanks, Ryan -------------------- ![]() |

I'm assuming that the silver is a solid base and that the kandy red is a transparent finish. You don't wanna flake on top of the red. The flakes won't be red unless you use red flakes. But I think the flakes willl be pronounced very much and wouldn't turn out right. As far as clear goes, I'd do 2 coats of wet, let it dry over night, do a wet sand with 1600 grit, one more wet coat of clear. After baking the clear, wet sand with 2000 grit and buff. If not baking the car, do the last step a week or so later.

I'll be spraying a clear with metalflake in it, under the transparent red, over the silver base. Wouldn't that make the metalflake red? Then I'm gonna spray another clear with metalflake in it over the red. I know these flakes wouldn't be red, they'd be silver. That's exactly the effect I'm shooting for. I want two layers of flake, the red, under the kandy, and silver, over it. Do ya still see probs? -------------------- ![]() |

you can't spray the clear under the red. Base coat won't stick to the clear. And if it does stick, the red will cover the clear and you won't be able to see the flakes. To see the flakes underneath you'll have to use a transparent red. Then the flakes won't be red.

Well, I hate to ask a question and keep disagreeing with the answers but kandy is meant to cover a base color and the base color still be seen through the hue of the kandy. So let's say I spray a silver base, then kandy(transparent) red over it, then when the sun hits the car silver will shine through the red color. That's what kandy is. So to say the flakes wouldn't be red under the kandy doesn't make sense. I also plan on putting the flakes in an intercoat clear, designed to be sprayed between coats of paint.

This is a quote from a how to guide @ H.O.K.
hope it helps you out. KANDY COAT (optional) Once you're satisfied with the flake application, allow flash time, then topcoat with 1-3 coats of Clear. Let dry overnight and D.A. sand with 240 no-fill sandpaper the next day. Be careful of high points and edges, as it is easy to sand through and ruin all you've done. Air and tack. Then begin Kandy coats. Follow label instructions. See appropriate tech sheets for Kandy application. i didnt think you could paint Kandy colours over flake.....but is i read, i guess you can. I have seen cars here in sydney with rainbow metal flake and it looks F*#@ng unreal.......very out there...but you gotta have the right colour to do it. Have a look at the House of Kolor web site. Its got some good how to guides. good luck with the paint job....... -------------------- ![]() 312whp with more to come.... |

I think the reason it says to spray clear coats over the flake, before the kandy, is so that the kandy has a smooth surface to go on. It's a possibility a flake might be on its end and catch the kandy.

I was unsure if the kandy was transparent. Since it is you'll have no problems seeing the flakes. I have my doubts about the clear underneath, but it the manufacturer recommends it, then go with it. If this is just some amateur on the net (like me), then check with a real paint shop or the manufacturer.

Wow.. I went to the paint store today and got floored. Here's what happened: When I went there a month ago they quoted me $300 to $400 for the paint to do the paint job like i wanted. Then a few weeks later they requote it at $500- $600. And they were just ball park prices...
So I go there today to buy the stuff. Keep in mind he only gave me ballpark prices so I didn't know the exact amount. Well as he's ringing it up he starts telling me how I'm probably gonna have to rethink my paint job... sure enough it all came to $1400 just for the paint to do the kandy red with two layers of flake, $1000 kandy red and one layer of flake, and $800-$900 for just kandy... so hehe, i guess I'll be spraying it with something a little more affordable. $600 seemed reasonable to me. But even that... i'd hate for someone to key it and ruin a $600 + labor paint job. Now that I know the value of what I was gonna do... there's no way i'd get a $1400 +labor paint job and have someone key it and ruin it... so back to the drawing board. ![]() -------------------- ![]() |
