The check battery light came on in my car. Is it the battery or alternator? Is there a way to tell, or do i have to go to a mechanic to get it checked out.

The battery symbol means that all your power is coming from the battery. So it's probably your alternator. The check battery light comes on when your car is running off the power from your battery (if the potential produced by your alternator drops below that from the battery).
To check: if you have a voltmeter, check the potential across your battery terminals. With the car running, it should be 14 volts or so. When the car's not running it should be 12.6ish. Go to an auto parts store, the have some devices that will check these things definitively. If your battery is fully charged, you have some running time left (safe bet, 30 minutes). Just don't use the stereo, headlights, tire scoop mounted leds, etc. -------------------- ![]() |
