This is one of the VERY few porsche's to ever run an inline 4... so there is only one engine option. I think it's also one of the very few FR layout Porsches... anyway... model years are 76-81 If I remember correctly... or is it 83? I dunno... 76 to early 80's.

I thought it was the '86. I'm pretty sure it is, the '86 944. But I could be wrong....

Umm... my old-school porsche knowledge isn't all that... but the two cars share the same engine of different generations I believe... one turbo one n/a. I believe the timing belt may be the same between the two... but no-one ever confirms anything. Some people use one belt, some people use the other... and yes... the 944 is a mid eighties model...

the blue top wasnt really a power maker. if your going for it you should go all out a find a mapped black top.

As I mentioned in your other thread, (by the way, you really should stick to one...), the bluetop is the oldest of the 4AGEs. Personally, I would not go through the trouble of a 7AGE with the bluetop. You can get a silvertop or blacktop head off eBay for a decent price, just be patient. You could also try posting a WTB ad at www.club4ag.com

I disagree... but the new heads (smallport, 20V) are far better. I've made some fair power out of bluetop 4AGs...

Anyway... if you are really gonna go n/a 7AGE... at least go with a smallport head (90+ corolla GTS, 90+ Prizm GSI). That head is far better for an n/a set-up because the ports aren't overly "big".

As for a 20V... slightly more difficult because of a lack of good diagrams... but do-able. It would be one of the first... unless of course you can beat me to it. I would choose a 20V because of it having 20 valves... I like the factory ITBs.

I presently have a 7agte in my celica with blue top. I use the ae86 ecu (afm) and wiring with bad result (not compatible with e-manage) ... I will update this winter for an 4agze ecu (map dli setup). Even if you go n/a (with the red top) , to have the full potential of the hybrid you have to go piggy back or stand alone to change the timming/injection curves and it`s impossible with the sucking afm.

I have looked at the 20V head.,... but the variable timing confuses me.

it looks like a regular head when you take the valve cover off. Could you run it without the variable timing?

YEah... the AFM and the crappy stock USDM and Canada ECUs do creat all sorts of tunig hazards. I suggest you look into Megasquirt. It's a DIY standalone unit with a LOT of tuning capabilities and can eliminate the AFM and stock ECU.

Variable Valve Timing works with the intake cam gear. It has nothing to do with the head design really... aside from oil passeages and stuff. Basically, on the silvertop 20V... VVT kicks on at 4000 rpms and the ECU sends a signal to the VVT solenoid and the solenoid acutates the VVT. It works like a computer controlled Cam Gear that advances 15 degrees. It doesn't make a huge difference, but it does increase top-end response. On VVT-i models, the VVT solenoid is always active and can retard and/or advance the intake timing any time depending on rpm, throttle, and conditions. Usually VVT-i is only on the intake side, with exception to the 3SGE BEAMS Blacktop which had it on both intake and exhaust.

And yes... you can run the engine without trouble without the VVT. I'm currently waiting on a set of cam gears for mine... =]

Thank you. I'm actually considering selling my 20V AE86 because I want to re-do the swap "my way". The current engine harness is too much to look at... but at least I got it running good.
