what kind of things do you like? History? Grand monuments of nature? simple fun stuff that only locals know?

Willing to fly? or just within a weekend driving distance?

Me, i like grand displays of history... something that can tell a story just by looking at it and you can feel all the history locked inside jsut by being there. So now that im finally on the west coast, i want to drive down to McMinnville, OR to see the largest plane ever constructed... The Spruce Goose!

But thats the nerd in me, i know its not everyones idea of a cool trip.

History lesson: The Spruce Goose! was probibly one of the best worst planes ever, it was very cool and the biggest, but only actualy flew for like 30 sec, its cable/pully system that controled the flaps, ruters, etc maid it all but imposible to operate.

Australia is one of the places I have to see befor i die, (I wana go down under smile.gif

Engineering lesson: All planes, esp those back in the 1930s, basically use mechanical cable/pulley systems to manuever its control surfaces. Only in the past decade have planes been created with fly-by wire systems. There are some pretty lengthy equations that describe the correct control system feedback for cable driven flight controls. They are very scalable and was not the reason why the goose did not succeed.

History Lesson: The Spruce Goose was an insane project by the ecentric Howard Hughes. But it is marvel of ingeneous engineering. It was created to make trans-atlantic flights to aid in suppling the allied forces during WW2. But the war ended during its design phase. Only one was made. By the time that one was built, it had already sucked up so much money that congress forced Hughes to conceed. During a taxi test it which it was suppose to just be moved, Huges realized this would be the only oppurtunity he would have to ever see it fly. So he ignored tower orders and put her at full throttle. She lifted off the water surface and flew for about a mile. It didnt matter how long it flew. The point was that all the critics that said an aircraft that size couldnt fly were shut up. It proved that the same thoeries that made a toy airplane fly could be scaled to make anything, any size fly, there were no limits.

Its all good. I know that nobody does care except me. I love aviation and space history stuff because thats my field, i dont expect others to care.

And if you are going out of the country, Italy was a blast last time i went! Staying in the country, you should throw a dart on a map and go. The best trips are the ones that you find, not plan out. There is SO much in this country to see and do. Anywhere you go, youll find something.

Airships? you mean dirigibles? you mean giant balloon ships that they havent used since WW2, and even then the best ones were filled with combustable hydrogen? You mean those things that are only used today for overhead shots of football games? You mean those flying things that would loose to an ST in a race, but yet takes a mile to turn due to the instense virtual bouyancy?

yeah... those are cool!!! biggrin.gif

closest thing you come to anti grav, theres some misconceptions about airships, your gas in your tank is more dangerous then the hydrogen in an airship.

This is one of the few discarded great inventions that was never fully developed, I think the last 2 centuries is littered with interesting technologies. But Id have to put Air ships and Nuclear power at the top of the list of technologies with the largest potential, but never pursued or fully developed.

Imagine where we would be today if we would have fully pursued nuclear fission technologies, learning to safely harness fission in every day applications such as cars, jets. really every fuel/energy source has its hazard, JP8 fuel for planes, the most toxic stuff you can think of, probably just as bad as anything radioctive if it containinates an area.

And Airships... I can only imagine we probably have floating way stations or mini cities in the air, or Air cargo haulers instead of ocean freight. So can haul so much more stuff with airships then airplanes and faster then ocean freighters or trains. It would be awesome.

Fission is ok, but fusion is better becasue it doesn't necessarily involve any harmful radiation or waste. wink.gif

Dispite energy costs, the energy output from a fusion reactor would be far greater. Theres a team in California I believe working on a fusion reactor, using a donut shaped chamber with plasma flowing in the centre contained by a electromegnetic field.

assuming you're talking about fusion its still being researched. theres a tokamok fusion reactor abut 5 minutes from my house. they've been able to create energy but a lot more has gone in than has come out. give it a couple more decades wink.gif

Fusion energy is like the energy source of the future, Im sure there is a lot of companies looking for a piece of the technology when its developed, I would think mainly energy companies. And the way I explained there apparatus is completely simplified, its quite sophisticated.

Canada is a bilingual country so mixing of languages isn't unheard of, and litre is a "variant" of liter, not necessarily french, though that is how they spell it.

Ya man its instinct, men want the most suitable mates, and women want a provider. People are still free to make decisions to the contrary, but I would think statisticlly this is the case.

QUOTE(coustoe @ Nov 21, 2004 - 12:10 PM)

closest thing you come to anti grav, theres some misconceptions about airships, your gas in your tank is more dangerous then the hydrogen in an airship.

I believe that airships did get their fair share, but was not found to be cost effective. It is much easier to create lift using a wing and fluid forces than with bouyancy. The size airship needed to lift a certian mass is vastly greater than the size of wing needed to lift the same craft. The lightest gas available, hydrogen, was used and still massive hangers had to be constructed to house them. Yes, gasoline is much more volitile than hydrogen. But the lower heating value of gasoline is enomous compared to its size, plus its really easy to store. Hydrogen is not as energetic or as easy to store compressed. And without compression, it just takes up a lot of space.

The size airship required to lift the same amount of cargo as an ocean tanker would probably have to be a few miles in diameter. And the size bouyant mass needed to lift a small city?? It would be the size of a small state! My guess would be probably be MA. And even then, how you are you going to get plumping? sewage? keep it from drifting arond? Also, airships are very susceptible to weather conditions. The British gave up on thiers because too many were crashing on thier way to or from India.

Fission is ok, but fusion is better becasue it doesn't necessarily involve any harmful radiation or waste. wink.gif

Dispite energy costs, the energy output from a fusion reactor would be far greater. Theres a team in California I believe working on a fusion reactor, using a donut shaped chamber with plasma flowing in the centre contained by a electromegnetic field.

where do people get these jobs? honestly?

My department of Aeronautics and Astronautics here at the University of Washington are one of the leaders in plasma and fusion research. There is a dual toridical plasma reactor in the lab above mine which studies the the helicity of plasma injected into a Tokamak fusion reactor. Also there is a 'spin-off' lab in Redmond which does a lot more than the stuff here on campus. The stuff there is really cool! The stuff here on campus has to be restricted from super harmful or radioactive materials, they dont.

If you want a job like that, get a MS or PhD in physics, Aerspace Engineering, or nuclear engineering with a focus on plasmas. Im sure the job offers will pour in after that.

I hardly ever see hard science jobs posted. I've talked with lots of engineers in the 90s who ended up being computer dweebs because they couldnt find jobs.

On Airships, their are various hybrids, and new designs that have been in the works forever, I'm not sure on all the technologies, but there are the conventional 2 mile long airships to lift cargo, hybrid wing for additional lift and hydro/hel for lift, and speculation on more ways of generating more lift power.

ive always wanted to go to Japan! but it cost so much!! not only to get there, but i hear the place itself is expensive. Thats why when japanese tourists come to the states, they end up buying tons of stuff because its cheaper here than there.

Well Im an avid traveler

Get a Credit card from delta or unite dor your favorite air liner
Once you sign up they have like 10,000 travel miles etc.Every dollor you spend you get miles annd at some store or companies you get double miles etc.
Cost $50 annual fee which isnt bad. Example:
My girlfriends mother told me she wanted to buy her son a laptop. We went to bestbuy. She was going to pay it in cash. She Gave me $1400 in cash.I used Delta Visa.I put $1400 on it.A week later I sent the $1400 out.
