I haven't looked too much into yet but was wondering which synthetic oil you prefer. Any good or bad comments on them?

I just wondered since it's getting close to time for my oil change and I got some pretty high miles. I thought about a tune-up and synthetic oil. Oh yeah, whats good for the trans? I got my ideas. Now I want to hear yours.

Umm.. It might be too late for you to change to synthetic if you have pretty high miles.. I would stay away from it, since it's lot thinner, and you might develop a leak. Tune up sounds good though.. But make sure to check for leaks often if you do change to synthetic oil from convertional. smile.gif

Edit(add): oh yeah.. I like Mobil1 Fullsyn. It seems to have the highest endurance and stuff.. speaking of non-racing oils and such. But I have also heard that Amsoil is good.. Even though I haven't tried yet, and I won't until I have enough money to change to that. I hope that helps.

That has nothing to do with engine oil.

You should not go from standard to synthetic like that.

I also use Mobil 1: 15W:50 (spring/summer car only & 3sgte). Dont use that thick of an oil for the 7a or 5s I wouldnt even recommend it for the 3s as its WAY to thick IMO.

If you are diligent with your oil changes it wont matter what oil you use. (within reason)

Stick with what you're using.

P.S. I have ATF in my tranny biggrin.gif Shifts like butter.

An awful lot of synthetic oil isn't actually synthetic. It's cracked hydrocarbon based.

Generally, you get what you pay for.

On the other hand, with a NA 5S block, why the hell would you want to pay for fully synth. Semi is perfectly fine for that engine.

FYI - Mobil 1 is a real synthetic, and pretty damn good. It took 5000 miles of the GTE before it needed a change.

Mobil 1 and castrol synthetic are the best for your buck. If you wanna use a crazy sythetic oil, use motul. I would use mobil 1 or castrol. As far as tranny fluid, what do you have? Manual or auto?

Manual...

It seems that the majority (that replied) uses mobile 1. That was the one I was thinking of.

I switched to synthetic oil (Castrol gtx) at about 120,000 miles. It starts better in cold weather, runs smoother, seemed like a tiny tiny tiny bit more power( i could be wrong). I wish I hadn't switched though because now it leaks oil really bad,a quart and a half in a 5 day work week, and it cost alot to keep oil in it. Synthetic oil isn't bad, but switching to synthetic at a higher mileage will show you problems that you would have otherwise not seen, like worn gaskets. When I get a brand new car I will put in synthetic but not in another used car or motor. Besides an engine gets accustomed to the type and grade of oil it gets on a regular basis

When I put synthetic oil in my trans almost all of it leaked out. But, when I switched back to regular of the same grade it stopped.

Nycelica I think you have it backwards, shouldn't you use the thinner oil 5W10 in the winter, and the 10W40 in the spring summer. Its cold, so you would want a thinner oil?

In regards to 95SThatch, dude a 2 quarts in a 10 working days. That is absolutely terrible. Any gain you get by using systhetic is probably lost with all the cost of putting oil in to the vehicle. I'd switch to 10W30 maybe Quakre state max life, or valvoline high mileage.

Im using Castrol 10W30, its great stuff, but as mentioned it tends to leak and also early morning shifting can be hard, Im think of going back to petroleum base. Yes it is possible!

I'm using Top Secret engine oil....
Not bad... The engine runs very quite and gives smooth acceleration all the way to the Red Line. Easy "in the morning" start-up as well.

I know I don't have very many boxes, which means I haven't had many posts, which means poeple don't take me serious very often. But please, everyone out there who swiches to synthetic oil after using regular, your first change should be within a 1000, closer to 500. And the next should be under 2000, closer to 1000. Synthetic is thinner, as most people know, but it will break lose stuff that the original oil left in there. These things that were gummed up in the corners of the engine will break lose and could find there way to something important. So if your going to swich, and I recomend swiching, do this. I use Castrol full synthetic with K&N filter. Works great, you'd be hard pressed convincing me to change.

I just wanted this post to get back up to the top to make sure people had a chance to read what I said in my last post before switching oils. This is every important and yet often neglected.
