Best-city-flag survey ranks Seattle 30th, Portland 7th
Other Northwest cities make the list

09:02 AM PST on Monday, November 29, 2004

Associated Press

A recent survey ranked Portland's city flag as the seventh-best and Seattle's city flag as the 30th-best in the country.

The North American Vexillological Association, which studies flags, ranked 150. It says the best flags are simple and distinctive, use meaningful symbolism and have no writing or seals.

The Portland flag is an offset cross of blue, white and gold stripes. A star is just left of center, and it's all on a green background.

According to information on the city's Web site, the green symbolizes Oregon's forests.

The intersecting vertical and horizontal blue stripes represent the Columbia and Willamette rivers, with the central white star signifying Portland at their confluence.

The yellow stripes represent the harvest of grain because Portland is a wheat exporter.

The Seattle flag was designed by former Councilman Paul Kraabel. According to the city's Web site, it is a white and teal blue/green flag with a stylized portrait of Chief Sealth ringed by the words Seattle, City of Goodwill and undulating white lines, representing the waves in Puget Sound flowing from the center to the left edge. Only three copies of the flag were made.

Washington, D.C., was judged to have the best flag and Pocatello, Idaho, the worst.

It breaks the rule on writing with the slogan: "Proud To Be Pocatello."
