The main difference is in the heads of the two engines. The 3S-FE has a "F" economy-based head...it has a shallow valve angle and is designed to produce power at mid-RPM levels. The 3S-GE has a "G" performance-based head, which produces more power at higher RPM, and has a much greater valve angle. I've got both engines in my '88 Celicas, and they're both good engines...one's just a lot more powerful than the other.
