They say full synthetics can go 18,000 miles without being changed, as long as they are topped off, and oil filter is changed 3,000 miles.. But I just change my oil at 3,000 miles, unless I do something stupid, like mis-downshift.. *cringe*

you ever look at your oil after 3,000miles? it looks nothing like it did the day you put it in. aslo, most oil filters are made out of cardboard...you think thats going to last a year or more?

if you are being cheap, then just buy crap oil ($1.50ish a bottle), but change it often. oil is the life blood of an engine!

I change mine every 2k-2500 . Norm its just cause it seems forever and i dont drive a ton. But yeah u should def change ur oil often. I notice a dif in power every time i change it. also with older engines it will keep em runnign longer and smother, i also add a ring conditoner as well.

doh, to awnser ur question, i check every week.

I try to remember to check it at least once a month, I change it once a year or every 35,000 miles, change the filter every 4 months or 5000, but I use Amsoil series 2000 0W30, I wouldn't try that with any other oil,,,
last car had Amsoil its entire life and got 161,000 miles b4 I lost all the water and cracked the head, couldn't measure any wear in the motor, even the end-gap on the rings was only .003 out of spec, (the NEW aftermarket ones were .004 out, had to buy orig. MAZDA rings, they were perfect .011 for spec of .008-.014, so NO wear in the cylinders or anywhere else. So as long as I run a good synthetic, I see no reason to needlessly change my oil too often.

I'm pretty religious about checking my oil color and level....I put fresh Castrol GTX 10w-30 in along with a good filter every 2500-3000 miles, sometimes more often than that. If it looks like its not clean enough to protect the engine, then I drain it right away....if I'm not too lazy. wink.gif

You guys change ur oil less than 3000 miles? If I did that i'd be changing it almost every 2 weeks - completely unnecessary.

Well some people like me, i dont drive far at all. I drive at the most 12k a year, and thats with taking 3-4 very big road trips. I prolly drive around 8k a year. I live right down the street from my college, and i work from home, and if i get a second job its no more then 5-10 miles away. Therefor it makes sence for me. cause im still only changing my oil every 3-4 months. And i dont know bout u guys but i love just working on my car.

Most decent fully synths can run to 25-30K without breaking down. 10K should be no problem.

I change mine every 4.5K, and I drive the hell out of it. Oil in a GT-Four leads a hard life. And it looks pretty good when it comes out.

Changing fully synth in a 5S-FE every 3K is pure insanity IMHO.

Needing another one 18000 miles later, bloody annoying.
