Can your average body shop mold cut out a hole and mold in a hood vent to make it look right? How much could one expect to pay for the labor? Has anyone had this done?

Looks great guys. I think I might investigate this further with some body shops in the area. Second question. Suppose I want to get a GT4 vent like DMC. Here is the information from Manny's post:
plate assy, hood bulge 76190-20010 $ 42.95 middle hood vent bulge assy, hood 76180-20010-AO hood bulge (the -AO after the pt# is a paint code, if you know your code insert it there.) Is the first item the grill and the second item the part that would be molded to the hood? -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

jay, the 2 parts you listed #1 is the grill, #2 is the little bulge on the side of it, there is no 2nd part to the hood vent on the gt-4 hood, its just a hole resessed into the hood for the grill to sit in.

it attaches with nuts from underneath. the grill has little "studs" attached to it.

If u want a GT-4 hood vent, Erebuni sells jsut the vent that looks VERY similar to it.

QUOTE If u want a GT-4 hood vent, Erebuni sells jsut the vent that looks VERY similar to it. http://www.spoilers.com/accessories.htm scroll down Yea, but that vent has a huge bulge around it and doesn't look as good IMO. QUOTE it attaches with nuts from underneath. the grill has little "studs" attached to it. Do you mean the studs (like the threaded part of a bolt?) fit through pre drilled holes in the hood and then are attached with nuts on the opposite side. If no, please explain. If yes, does the GT4 hood simply have a hole cut in it and the vent lays flush on top of it? Or is there more to it in terms of ridges etc that would be tough to duplicate if I bought the vent only and had a body shop custom make one? -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

Ok. Critique this plan:
Cut a perfectly sized hole in the OEM hood and buy the GT4 center vent. Drill the holes for the studs and presto - I have a vented hood for my really hot engine bay. The only question I have is can the GT4 vent be bent slightly to flow smoothly over the rounded OEM hood (unlike the GT4 hood which seems to be flat where the vent is)? -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

heres the only problem i see with using stock hood, the vent like u said on the original it lays flat, that only because the hole thats in the gt4 hood is sunken in its not just a cut out. U could get it to work but it won't be flush.

jgreening, its possible to do, but i dont know how it will turn out with a stock hood. the gt4 hood has a different shape to it.
maby you should look into getting a carbon fiber hood like Itchyb just put on his car. i think that has a working vent on it. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I see what you mean now Drocay. I wonder if a good body guy could make it sit flush with a little fiberglass work...
I have thought about the c-one hood Art. I think they look great but I have two reservations. First, the knockoff is raised in the center like an evo hood which I don't particularly care for. If you look at the original c-one hood on the body kit link above you will see what I mean. Also, the hood itself is just a little agressive for my tastes... -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

its kind of hard to tell in pics, but the gt4 hood is raised in the middle to.
take a look at this pic of my car. to get an idea of what it looks like. http://www.6gc.net/photo.php?file=/images/...&referer_itu=60 you could always do a full gt4 hood and bumper like me an manny did. it does a good job at venting all that turbo heat out of the engine bay. Itchy's hood isn't stock silver, I would still have to repaint (trying to avoid that)
The technique is kinda simple, when I cut the hood I will leave notches or tabs for the vent to bolt into. The vent hole wouldn't be completely round, it would have 6 teeth. Think of it like carving a mouth in a pumpkin, ![]() the vent bolts to the teeth. -------------------- |

Love the pictoral explanation! Have you tried to bend yours slightly with the curve of the hood? Does it stress the vent at all by doing that?

the vent is curved. I would assume (I hope) it's already with the curve of the hood. To test for curve, I turned it upside down, placed it on a flat surface (my coffee table), and I can rock it back and forth (see-saw). The vent seems pretty strong and there is a rubber gasket/lining all the way around the outer edge of it. I'm sure that I could make it work and I don't think it would cost too much if a body shop installed.

I would never have guessed by pictures that the vent is curved. When you say that the vent is "strong", is it rigid or brittle like a little bending would break it? Or do you just mean "tough" so that it can hold up to a little bending? -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

I have a new idea for installation. I think I am going to cut the hole exactly the same size as the vent. Then, I am going to take a piece of rolled steel that has a slightly larger outside diameter and a slightly smaller inside diameter and weld it to the bottom of the hood. I will then drop in the vent, mark the holes and drill.
The advantage of this over the pumpkin method is that the vent will sit down into the hood just a little to make it flush or nearly flush. Any critiques? -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

hey,
i have a slightly bent st205 hood wi/o any trim .. bent on sides but if someone wants all the vent holes and center bump i can cut up .. not worth shipping whole hood .. hood is aluminum so welding to steel US hood is very difficult .. anyway if anyone wants the holes with extra material around each to attempt making a st204 GT4 hood shoot me offer .. otherwise hood is going to become a pop can t -------------------- Old guy with the toys
