how to install a SAFCII in a 94 GT Options

hey all installed my SAFCII today, figured id make a quick writeup on it, for future refrence...so, here it goes.
youll need:
10mm wrench to remove battery cable
good soldering iron with good solder
wire strippers
electrical tape
14mm socket, wrachet and extention to take out your seat if you want to.

To wire in the SAFCII is actually really simple, it just a handfull of wires that need to be tapped into and one that needs to be spliced.
So, lets get started.
DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
first you need to get crunched up in a ball, and wedge yourself into the little space in front of your passanger seat, look behind your center console, and find your ECU...if you cant find it, or dont know what a ECU is, STOP! you shouldnt be installing this!! hahah...or you can just take your seat out, its only 4 bolts...makes it much easier, lots more room to strech out and be confortable.
you'll have a 26pin connector, a 16pin connector, and either a 12 or 22 pin connector depending on weather you have a manual or automatic, (looking from left to right.)
pull out the 3 connectors, and reach behind the console and unplug the remaining connectors, and free up the harness so that you can have some room to work.

now, take the 26pin connector in your hand, look closley at the wire side..you'll notice they have a number on each corner of the plug, coresponding to a pin # on it. find the #1, and from there follow to pin # 3 which will be a black wire with yellow stripe. this is your RPM wire(ignitor) take your wire strippers, and about 3 or 4" from the ECU, just strip back about 1/4" if the covering, without cutting the wire.
take the green wire from the SAFC harness, twist it around the blk/yel wire, and solder it in place, then tape it up.
next find pin # 14 on the same 26pin connector. its a brown wire. this is your ground. your gonna connect 2 wires to this wire so take your wire strippers, and again strip back about 1/4" of the covering 3 or 4" from the ecu. take the BROWN wire from the SAFC, twist, solder, tape. then about another 2 or so inches back strip another 1/4" section of covering from the same wire. take the BLACK wire from the SAFC and twist, solder, tape. THE GROUND HAS TO BE HOOKED UP THIS WAY!!!! we're done with that connector.
take the 16 pin connector, find the #'s again. find pin #2. its a grey wire with black stripe. this is the map sensor. about 4" back from the ECU cut the wire and strip back about 1/4" from both sides. take the side of the wire that comes from the engine bay, and twist it together with the white wire from the SAFC, again, twist solder tape. then take the ecu side of the wire, connect with the yellow wire from the SAFC twist, solder and tape.
next , find pin# 11, its a black wire with white stripe. thats your TPS sensor. strip back about 1/4" of the wire covering, take the grey wire from the SAFC, twist, solder, tape.
next, find pin# 13 its a clearish white wire, thats your knock sensor. strip back about 1/4" of the wire covering, take the purple wire from the SAFC, twist, solder, tape. we're done with this connector.
now if you have a manual, take the 12pin connector (22 if its a auto) find the #7 pin (#12 for auto) its a black wire with yellow stripe. strip back about 1/4" of the wire covering. take the red wire from the SAFC, twist, solder, tape.
THATS IT. reconnect all the plugs, plug the SAFC into the harness,and reconnect the battery, but DO NOT start the car yet. put the ignition in the "on" position make sure nothing is burning or smoking..lol then follow the setup directions in the SAFC manual. ENJOY!!

What is the benefit of using a SAFCII ?
I know that you can control the A/F ratio with it but does it affect the performance a lot?

ive read posts where people have said you can gain like 8-10 hp on a n/a car, but i cant conferm it, right now its just a glorified gauge for me till i get my turbo stuff installed, then im gonna be using it to control my injectors.
i just installed it to see the knock response n/a for comparison for when i have the turbo in.

Good write-up Manny....very easy to follow. I'm still considering throwing one on my car at some point just for some extra power and throttle response, but I'm wondering how much extra power can be had from it in N/A trim.

I'd be happy with 8-10 horsepower....can anybody support those numbers??

hanyo...theres nothing for it to really affect..its just a glorified gauge at the moment...i havent changed anything, setting wise, that would affect the engine.

As far as this being your fmu goes...you may run into problems. If you hack the AFC, it can work. Not as well as an e-manage and not as reliable, but far cheaper.

actually, ive found it really easy to use,...then again, i havent messed with any fuel settings...right now its just a glorified gauge, till the turbo goes in. and as far as being able to see the spedo, the pics are kinda deciving, the way its mounted, i can see everything over 20mph...who needs to see under that anywauy

in that pic, yes is does, although i dont think i let the car warm up enough when i calibrated it. ive had it peak as high as 225 on a WOT run from 2nd to 5th..lol

Installing on my 95 gt 5spd i found that i had a 22pin connector (supose to be on a 94 auto) and like the auto the #12 pin was the black and yellow striped wire.

Just thought I'd add that my 98 GT also had a 22 pin connector rather than a 12 pin. The #12 pin thats black/yellow on the 94 is red and black on the 98. Also, the map sensor wire on the 98 harness is blue but it's in the same spot.

I used them when I installed my CD head unit and haven't had any problems, but you're probably right, the ECU is alot more important and the risk is probably better not taken... guess I have to learn to use a soldering gun now. *sigh*

i would actually use an electrical tie-in for it since thats what the connector is used for.

^^^^^ i think they are called "scotch locks" or something of the sort, and with the wire nuts, if you do choose to go that route tape up n over the top of them to the wire so they wont be as prone to spin off, soldering is by far the best way, not too hard to do, practice on some spare wires if you feel nervous

but technicly its an "Electrical Tap Connector"
heres a pic of it and i believe this would be the cleanest way of doing it but a more permanent way is always a good soldering. make sure you use rosin core solder tho.

I soldered mine when I installed, I don't wanna take any chances. I've had those scotchgard things come loose before on other things on my car just from vibrations and I tightened them reallly tight when I installed them.. (for lighting and such).

check your wiring, then follow the instruction manual to set it up properly.
the knock sensor wire is very easy to see on the ecu plugs, its the only wire that connects to a plug that has clear sheilding (on my 94, anyway..lol)

those connectors are for home wiring only. they are made to twist thick gauge wiring together inside of a house where there are no vibrations or movement to deal with .

you really have to solder the safc in. anything else will come loose and cause the car to stall out.

well, technically, living in california we have earthquakes so you can't say there is NO vibrations at all

but it's ok. I bought a spool of wire and some solder, and found my dad's old soldering iron, taught myself to solder, then went and did it on my car. I only had one crappy connection but after I went back and resoldered it it was ok and since then, no problems whatsoever.

is the throttle signal the same as a knock sensor? The neo has a throttle signal. Oh and the celica is a pressure sensor type cpu right? should I use the 3sfe wire diagram since the 5sfe wire diagram aren't in the booklet?

Just strip back the wire you want to tap into and poke a hole through it, then insert the wire you want to connect through the hole wrap it around the wire you want to tap and then wrap it with electrical tape. Done! I did this when I installed my car starter and I have never had a problem. That was three years ago.
If you want to connect two wires together just get some red butt connectors from you hardware store but make sure you crimp them well enough that you can't pull them apart then wrap it in electrical tape. Always wrap any connection in electrical tape. Then when your done bunch the wires together and wrap them all in electrical tape. Do not use duct tape or masking tape these Are no good and those twisty things are no good also don't use scotch locks as they are awful and will cause you headaches.
