how much oil is needed for our cars..i dont have a manual and need to know....

I have the owner manual right here and it says
7A-FE with filter 3.7 qt 5S-FE with filter 3.9 gt -------------------- |

I just put in 4. I figure if it doesn't like the extra .3 than it can just burn it off(burns less than a quart between 3k changes).

i put 4 in and when i change at 3000 miles, 4 comes out

I was under the impression that putting in more oil than specified was bad for the engine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup, it will only harm the engine if you put 5 in, or some ridiculous amount.
