I hope not on a FWD car, the last thing he needs is traction loss on the front wheels.

Wrong - they do work. Actually Toyota had a purpose in making them low.
Friend of mine did measure acceleration and top speeds with original and "Supra" wings.
Difference was significant (I do not remember exact hp loss due to higher rolling resistance) for disadvantage of "Supra" style.

thats common sense if you slap on a huge wing that it will slow you down dur

we were specifically talking about down force

"can you feel the spoiler working at speed ?"
"the last thing he needs is traction loss on the front wheels."

yes larger spoiler will slow you down thats cause its bigger bulkier and creates drag

it most likely does nothing for downforce

really the only time you'll "feel" a spoiler working for you on a FWD car is if you are out on a track goin 100+ mph in a corner

I think he meant it doesn't serve a purpose on the Celica due to it being FWD, of course it works but it isn't a good kind of work, that is why when you see a FWD car in a high speed wreck usually has a big wing, it works but why do you wan't more rear downforce on a FWD car all it does is shift the weight transfer to the rear lowering the weight on the front wheels, when there isn't enough weight you lose traction.

I agree with traction issue. But downforce is also there with high spoiler. It does not matter if its FWD, RWD or AWD - rolling resistance concerns all wheels and downforce increases it. Not arguing, just advising.

maybe we should put the supra wing on the hood instead tongue.gif

Now here's a question for you. What's the different between placing a spoiler up high in the air, or have the same spoiler a little bit off the trunk?

The difference is that low spoiler is practically "show, not function".
When driving, air stream goes over hood, roof and then gets off the car body at the edge of roof/trunk lid. Low spoiler does not get much of this stream therefore does not create downforce, high spoiler gets and does.

Short update: Supra style spoiler adds ~220 pounds of weight to the rear at 55 mph. This of course increases with speed. Max speed is then limited by ~25 mph.

As I've posted last time:

This article may shed some light on the matter. This is for the GT-FOUR rear spoiler however. In particular:

The purpose of the rear wing is to correct the inherent balance disadvantage of a transverse-engined car compared with longitudinal-engined models like Fords and Subaru's. The aerofoil has been designed to minimise drag losses while still increasing the downforce and it is effective from 100-120 kph upwards.

"We get better traction and it makes the car more stable. The wing has two positions, up and down, with removable distance pieces. In the Japanese market it will be sold with the wing in me up position and the pieces in place, but to help transport the export cars the pieces will be removed and stowed in me boot ready to fit on arrival. "We are expecting to sell around 2500 examples in Japan alone with the pieces in place. The amount of downforce is influenced by ride height and we still have to carry out wind tunnel tests, but it's expected that there will be 50 kg of downforce at 100 kph with the wing in the up position, and maybe five times more than that with the wing at the low position.""

When they say up and down position, I believe they're referring to the lifter blocks.

Just to let you know, your hood keeps the front end down. In high speeds, that means there's nothing in the back to push the backend down. Hence the small spoiler. Big huge spoilers are useless, unless you have a RWD, and going insane amounts of speed. But in all cars, since hood acts to keep the front end down, because of the steering, little teeny spoiler is there to keep traction on the backend. You're looking at bit of traction loss on the turns and corners. On a high speed runs, spoiler is useless, unless that road you're doing the run has turns. But I do agree with some people. Since US Celica's are limited by gearing to 122MPH, I do agree that the spoiler is for show. Barely functional.

As i have a GT4 the traction problem is not the same as you guys !

i want to put a front lip on the bumper, with a TRD spoiler out back, but i already suffer with very light stering when pushing 150kmh plus speeds and was thinking if i could make a TRD wing that looked good but didn't give all that down force. or what size lip and clerance from the road to suck the front end down and counter the wing ?????

honestly there isn't 1 windtunnel designed kit for the celicas

so pretty much any lip you get doesn't do anything for downforce its just there to be pretty......

and i doubt the TRD wing will do much for down force
but if you have a GT4 why don't you keep the GT4 spoiler?

I'm interested to know how the 3 post spoiler compares to the 2 post... I heard it's a fair bit lighter, for one.

A high spoiler WILL slow you down, even in a quarter mile track. My best buddy's '97 Turbo Mirage had WAY less mileage on the quarter mile with the Lancer Evo VI wing on. He took it off, and the mileage went up considerably. So yes, it'll slow you down even in a short distance. smile.gif

EDIT: That is why I am leaving the stock wing on and as much as I want the TRD one, which I had one made for me by Chrisc and never payed for it, I won't bite the bullet. Plus the TRD is too much unwanted attenton. People think my car is a Supra...so imagine that TRD wing...they'll think it is damn fast, LOL. tongue.gif

i here what you guy's are saying.........

i just want something more to balance the look of my '4', i just think the three post spoiler looks understated with all the vents in the hood !

what about the 'supra style' spoiler, that can't have half as much down force (added drag) to it as the TRD one ???
or do i go 100% custom and get one made ???? anyone got any thoughts on that ????

Muahaha yeah man...because of the fat ass, people confuse it, LOL. The 6GC was never sold in Puerto Rico AFAIK...only the 7GC and I think older generations. So there is only a few imported ones and mine is one of them...plus it is the nicest one in the area so everywhere I go, it gets attention...especially when the turbo sucks air like a Hoover and the Blitz vents to the atmosphere, LOL.

Try explaining someone that it is NOT a Supra and the guy falling ass first saying it is. I blew a spark plug on the road so I pulled over by a gas station. Some guy was like: "Hey, bring that Supra over here...I wanna check it out. I wa slike: "It's a Celica, my man". He was like: "Dude, you don't even know what car you drive...that is a Supra. I am like: "It is a Celica...Supra's little cousin". The guy was so enthusiastic, he never believed it was a Celica, LOL. tongue.gif

I've had that a few times too, where people tell me I have a sweet supra, or "move your supra out of the way so I can get my car out of the garage" tongue.gif haha, it's just that the supra was based off of the celica chassis, and if someone didn't know cars, they'd get confused.

The Supra and Celica share a similar look but that's it, they haven't been based off the same chassis since the Celica Supra was made.

could you take a US standard spoiler, cut it and raise it to make a mini supra style spoiler..... not using the gt4 blocks ?

No, it is made just for the 6GC. It is a replica of the TRD one that doesn't sell anymore. The 7GC one is square and wider...the mounting is not angled like the 6GC. smile.gif

I didn't mean the wing itself, I meant how our hatches are rounded, not square like the 7GC. So our TRD wing on the mounting, goes angled in on the hatch.

hehe i just read that, I work at radioshack, and right next to me is a jewelry place, the guy that owns it has 2 cars. A Supra TT Targa top and a Porche 911 Turbo with some bad ass body kit on it. I always ask to let me drive one, he just laughs and walks away.
