Ok so I've been reading some random things online and some of it bugs me. Even the game review writers are being ignorant about some of the facts and histories of games.

I hope you all know that Need for Speed Underground wasn't the first Need for Speed right? It's actually like the 7th, and the origin of the series was to make a fairly realistic game rather than an arcade-style one. And that the 3 PS2 Grand Theft Auto games were each based off of a city in the original GTA?

all pretty trivial stuff but it just bugs me that people don't know some of this stuff tongue.gif

I think that gaming is becoming too much of a pop culture thing now. All the most recent games I've played lately SUCK. That includes Halo 2, Half Life 2, Doom, etc. The only game i've enjoyed of late was gta: sa. I'm getting tired of playing some of the same things over and over again, at least rockstar continually mixes it up now and then.

I still have a copy of GTA2 for the PSone and Need for Speed 3 for the PC. I even have the original Warcraft some where. My opinion on gaming I am more into FPS and racing games now, since the RTS genre is thinned out to only a few decent titles, I remember when Starcraft, Warcraft, Total Annihilation and Red Alert were the s***. I like the advancements in FPS but it is starting to lag a little, the new game Black is suppose to revolutionize the FPS genre by making the bullet damage more realistic, like being able to shoot the s*** out of the floor and drop to the next level like in Underworld or being able to put a bullet from a high powered weapon through the wall and kill an enemy.

video games have always been pop culture.

I totally am with you about Red Alert and all the RTS games, there just are no good ones out lately. I have Warcraft 3 but that seems to get old after like 20 minutes. I mostly play RPG's and racing games anymore, and not even that often bc it's hard to find a good game. Hopefully Advent Rising will be pretty cool.

I still play StarCraft. And that game's been out since 97' or 98'.... If you go on StarCraft Battle.net you could still find SH!T LOAD of peeps playing against each other. Seems like the newer game can't really replace it......

LOL! J/P We all know that's not possible when you own a 6GC! I've had my fair share of video games too. Hell I even worked at a game store for about a year!

Talk about not knowing your roots. Why has there been no mention of the Master System, ColecoVision, Magnavox Odyssey, or the TurboGrafx16?

I thought this was about knowing your roots? Do you know where we'd be without the Magnavox Odyssey? Do you remember the phenomenon we know as PONG? What about Splatterhouse for TurboGrafx16. Both revolutionized video games. PONG introduced kids to video games and believe it or not those kids are responsible for the games we play today. Splatterhouse was one of the most controversial violent game to exist and to be honest, without it I think we'd all be playing the 18th sequel to Strawberry Shortcake from the Atari 2600.

Yeah I read it I was the third to respond, well the TurboGrafx16 (basically a Genisis, same with the MS) wasn't that bad, nor the Master System, but the Calecovision come on, it had Amazing Bumpman and Skiing as hit games. BTW here is a good candidate for the worst roots system: Panasonic CD-i, inovative but terrible.

OK kids. Today we're going to learn to spell a new word. The word for today is virgin. K A D E T T spells virgin.
[/teacher voice]

Because those systems sucked.

Did you even read the Title of this Topic? Can you tell me why each one sucked?

If it wasnt for nintendo and mario 1 we pretty much wouldnt have games right now... And yes i know what the title says, and im just expressing my feelings twords games and how they evolved....

No. If it wasn't for PONG we wouldn't have video games right now. I agree Nintendo sped things up a bit but if they didn't do it someone else would. Sega or Sony perhaps. It was inevitable. Games will continue to advance and evolve. right along with technology.

You spelled towards wrong.

It was just a matter of time before a company introduced a new system. People love new things and nintendo was it. They just filled a void. They didn't start a revolution.

LOL I'm not a NAZI, just trying to inform you.

But no one cares about spell checking when it comes to forums, its not like im writing a report or anything..... And yes it was a matter of time before someone would introduce a console, and nintendo was it, nobody seen anything like super mario bro. 1, it was fresh and obviously made a huge impact on game developers influences.... therefore sparking a new generation of games thus revolutionizing.....

LOL you missed the point. It didn't matter who it was that introduced the next system. The foundation that had been laid by Nintendo's predecessors was rock solid. The decline was due to a lack of new systems and games. You can only do so much with old technology.

How do you impact an influece?
You can impact a developer but their influence is all their own.

How do you kinda go bankrupt?
either you are or you aren't.

IMO Nintendo gets so much credit because they invented the backgroud (ok, I know some Atari games had backgrounds, but you usually couldn't tell what they were) Nintendo kind of opened up the gaming market due to the high graphics of it's time, a major step from Atari, kind of like the Playstation from the Genesis. I personally think nothing can really out do a PC as far as power and you can upgrade at will, unlike a console, but also unlike a console it's not hard slapping a few thousand a year doing it, the PC advances faster than the games developed for it. I need an opinion of Dawn of War, I would have bought it but I splurged to much on a flat screen TV.

No, the founation was weak because the atari 2600 was a bust. People were throwing those things away because no one wanted them. You couldn't even pay someone to take it. They rounded up millions of cartridges and blew them up in the desert. I know that sounds dumb, but it's true. The industry was dead until Nintendo and Mario came out. They single-handedly revitalized the industry and made it what it is today. Sega had the Master System, but it only had like 5% market share. I still think the Commodore 64 rules, because it was the first 8-bit computer ever and it came out in the early 80's, long before the NES.
