SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The owners of the other contestants in this year's World's Ugliest Dog Contest may have thought their pooches had a chance — until they saw Sam.

The 14-year-old pedigreed Chinese crested recently won the Sonoma-Marin Fair contest for the third consecutive time, and it's no surprise.

The tiny dog has no hair, if you don't count the yellowish-white tuft erupting from his head. His wrinkled brown skin is covered with splotches, a line of warts marches down his snout, his blind eyes are an alien, milky white and a fleshy flap of skin hangs from his withered neck. And then there's the Austin Powers teeth that jut at odd angles from his mouth.

He's so ugly even the judges recoiled when he was placed on the judging table, said his proud owner, Susie Lockheed, of Santa Barbara.

"People are always horrified when I kiss him. He may turn into a prince yet. He's definitely a toad," she said. "I always thought he'd be great on greeting cards or on a commercial for Rogaine."

Sam, who's pushing 15, has something of a cult following after winning the contest — and fans' hearts — for three years running. Last year, huge crowds gathered around Sam and Lockheed at a local parade and Lockheed said she received letters and calls about her pup for weeks.

"So many people have told me they've got his picture on their refrigerator. He certainly has a little cult following," she said. "I did years of professional musical theater and never achieved the fame Sam has."

Sam will appear in this weekend's Fourth of July parade in Santa Barbara, but the recent events may be the cap on a long, ugly career. Lockheed says Sam's now suffering from congestive heart failure, lung and kidney problems and has definitely slowed down in his twilight years.

Still, he enjoys regular gourmet meals of sirloin steak, cheese balls, roasted chicken and flan (so he'll swallow his multiple pills). He also passes occasional weekends at the Gaviota ranch of Lockheed's boyfriend, where the World's Ugliest Dog rides in the back of an ATV with his few remaining hairs wafting in the wind.

Ah, but the weatherman isn't altering the clouds, he's just reporting on them. NASA, on the other hand, just blew a hole in a comet.

This is where living in a society where religion gets respected can be irritating. Stomping over somebody's religious symbols isn't excused by the unpopularity of that person's interpretation. And I'm fairly sure most religious people would object to seeing their earthly symbols nuked (at comet speeds, the energy is about the same as a small nuclear warhead) in the name of science.

I highly doubt this will go anywhere, not least because the orbit of the comet has apparently been essentially unaltered.

On his regular rounds Monday, Kenosha trash collector Inis Ramadani slung a load of garbage into the truck including a duffle bag stuffed with old blankets.

He punched the compactor button and heard a chilling noise over the clang of the machinery: the muffled scream of a child. "I looked around and thought, 'Where is that coming from?' " he said. "I have kids so I know what that sound is."

Ramadani slammed the stop button. He looked inside the truck and saw two small hands reaching out of the duffle bag.

He pulled Jacob Deates, 4, from the duffle bag where he had been hiding. Except for a bump on the head, the boy was uninjured. He ran crying back to his mother, who had been inside caring for a sibling.

Ramadani, 49, a trash collector since 2001, said Jacob was just seconds from being killed.

"Those compactors work fast, in a matter of seconds," he said. "It still is a very frightening moment."

Ramadani's practice of hitting the compactor button on the side of the one-person truck instead of the one in the driver's compartment likely saved the boy's life. Ramadani uses the outside button to be sure no trash tumbles out during the compaction.

"Usually, drivers just jump in (the driver's seat) and hit the compactor," said police Lt. John Morrissey. "It was very fortunate."

Investigators reviewed the case and referred it to social services as a routine procedure but Morrissey said it didn't appear to be a case of neglect. He said the boy's father is a Kenosha police officer who was not home at the time.

The boy, who loves watching garbage collectors work, apparently was playing near the trash and hid in the duffle bag, under the blankets, according to the police report.

Ramadani said he scanned the load of trash as he approached the Deates' home but Jacob was already hidden. Jacob was silent as Ramadani threw the duffle bag into the compactor, he said.

Jennifer Deates, Jacob's mother, did not return a call for comment.

Ramadani was back on his garbage route for the city on Tuesday, but he couldn't stop thinking of Jacob.

"I am glad that I was able to save a little boy's life," he said.

My point: just because you consider her beliefs "stupid sh!t" does not invalidate them.

Consider the world-wide reaction over the Taliban destroying those ancient images of Buddha. And unlike that destruction, which was a matter of desecration but didn't affect Buddhists beyond an emotional standpoint, her arguement is that blowing a hole in a comet has fundamentally impaired her ability to practice her beliefs. Say, like nuking Mecca would impair Muslims' ability to fulfill the tenets of their beliefs, which include at least one pilgrimmage there in a lifetime.

The thing wiht this is that she probably didnt even know this comet existed until it was in the news that Nasa did this. And on the converse, her believing that comets, stars and planets dictate her life doesnt validate it either.

I can see people throwing a fit because historical artifacts were destroyed, not because it had anything to do with religion. Still the kid is only four years old, and was alone. I just don’t comprehend letting a 4-year-old play alone outside with out even watching him, and she obviously was not watching him. I mean this woman jeopardized the life of her child. It’s a good thing that the man heard him and stopped the machine.

I used to play outside too, hide and seek and all that, but I remember my mom or dad checking up, and I also remember having some “restrictions” on where we were allowed to play and where we weren’t. I’m not saying it’s impossible to loose track of your kid, or that kids don’t wander and not listen, most kids are notorious for it. In that regard, if you know that kids tend to do that kind of thing wouldn’t you keep a closer eye on them? If she did look and see that the kid wasn’t there and abduction is the first thing to come to mind would you be frantic? I know if I had a child and he or she was missing I would be on the phone running around outside looking for him, doing something.

In my opinion this is a perfect example of poor parenting thank goodness that it wasn’t fatal, I don’t know how that woman would have lived with herself if her kid died.

also it says the mother was inside caring for a sibling - ok so lets say his lil or older brother skinned his knee and she ran in to get a bandaid for the kid and was gone for 2 mins - yeah she probably should have told the 4 year old to come with but at that split moment it was to care for the hurt child. It just doesnt say how long she was gone for. ya know what i mean? there just isnt enough about the situation to judge if it was poor parenting

I understand what you’re saying accidents happen and life goes on. Playing the devil’s advocate it to enticing to pass up.

Also I didn’t say your parent’s failed your still alive aren’t you?

I am simply giving my view on the matter at hand. If you haven’t already noticed I’m very stubborn and I get joy out or arguing.

I used to baby-sit for my 3 younger cousins, who were a handful, BUT I also knew where they were at all times. Yes they got in trouble sometimes, and yes they did not always listen to me, but like I said before children are notorious for running around and getting themselves lost. Knowing that I kept a closer eye on them, especially my youngest cousin because you can’t expect a young child to grasp the serious dangers that could occur from something that seems like no big deal.

I still think this is an example of poor parenting. In my opinion 4 year old children should NOT be running around outside alone. (I am only making an assumption here that this mother knew the kid was outside.) Especially if she has another child to care for, inasmuch as the other sibling is younger and most likely required more attention from her.

I’m not saying kids should be locked in the house, but at 4 years old you don’t really have enough common sense to know not to be playing in garbage. Which is why the mother should have a) not let him go outside alone or b) kept a close watch on him.

I understand that we don’t have all the facts and both of our opinions are based on assumptions right now, but under the circumstances and the information that I gathered from the article my opinion still stands as I previously stated.

I think the citizens of the United States of America should start a class action lawsuit to sue NASA for wasting their tax dollars on slamming the whatever into the comet. Humanity is curious, we want to know, we strive to know and exploring is something I whole-heartedly support because in 100, 200 years who knows the earth could go into major change and inadequate to live with and I think in that amount of time people will be able to visit the moon and live there.

You gotta go out on a limb to learn new things, hell people in 1600's thought the world was flat and there was nothing to the west and many many people probably called Columbus an idiot and wasted his time exploring but look where it got the world. Humanity has advanced to much so quickly in just the last 200 years that the next 200 will have just the same leaps and bounds in technology and discovery.

Where Snap-On gives you a warenty that they'll replace it if it breaks, the guys in the shuttle program basically have to have tools that will never break. Weight's a major issue, so they can't be carrying too many spares.

Same thing for the jokes about the $60 ashtrays on subs. Why not get a two-dollar ashtray? Answer: $60 buys you an ashtray that when broken cracks into distinct, easily retrieved pieces. $5 buys you glass splinters flying through a confined space.

July 29, 2005 -- The maniac camp counselor who drove five youths to their doom in the Catskills had her license suspended for speeding at 107 mph — and climbed behind the wheel even though a parent begged that she be banned from chauffeur duty.
Irina Mironova, 25, who also died in the crash, was racing so wildly with a carload of children from the Atlanta Dance Camp that two witnesses called 911 to report her driving out of control, going at least 80 mph and passing at high speeds on the shoulder.

Within minutes of the calls, she crossed the double yellow line on Route 17B in Sullivan County and rammed into an oncoming dump truck.

The 1994 Toyota Celica was crushed beneath the hulking hauler in an explosion of steel, blood and body parts.

"This is my 35th year in law enforcement, and I have never seen an accident of this magnitude," said Sgt. Don Prince of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department.

The mother of a 14-year-old girl who attended the Fallsburg camp — which has now been shut down for the summer — told The Post her daughter complained about Mironova's dangerous driving habits. She said she reported the girl's fears to camp owner Anna Kapitannikova on the eve of the horrific crash, in which Kapitannikova's own son died.

"My daughter . . . said she was afraid to get in the car with Irina because she drove too fast and my daughter didn't feel safe," the shaken mom said yesterday.



"On Tuesday, I called five or six times, trying to get Anna. I left messages. I was hysterical, frantic with worry. I couldn't sleep — I just had a very bad feeling."

Kapitannikova, a Brooklyn resident and former Russian ballerina, started the summer dance camp about six years ago. It charges about $1,800 a month per camper and caters mostly to the Russian-immigrant community.

She returned the worried mom's call on the eve of the tragedy.

"She told me, 'Why are you worrying?' " the mom said. " 'Don't worry, the kids are all OK. The counselors have been driving them for a long time. The children are safe.' "

But they were anything but safe. Mironova, who lived in Florida after emigrating from Russia, had lost her license after getting busted on May 7 in St. Lucie County, Fla., for driving 107 mph in a 70-mph zone, officials there said.

"This was murder," said one outraged camp father. "That counselor got in that car, drove recklessly and took five lives. And Anna allowed her to get behind the wheel."

In addition to Mironova — a former Russian volleyball player in her first year at the camp — the dead included:

* Illya Kapitannikova, 16, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. He was the son of the camp's owner and a promising dancer, who pals said had won more than 40 medals in competitions.

Illya "could have been like a Baryshnikov," said Alex Barinsky, the dad of a friend of the tragic teen.

* Igor Golovunin, 16, of Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn, who was best pals with Illya.

* Gabrielle Soybelman, 12, of Ocean Court in Brooklyn.

"I love my daughter," said her devastated dad, Boris, as he choked back tears.


* Natoliy Cheremnykh, 14, of Owings Mills, Md. His mother and brother were dazed yesterday after identifying his body. "I just can't believe it," said his shaken mom.

* Masha Fishman, 14, of Edison, N.J. "She was a great girl. This is irresponsible, stupid behavior," said her devastated aunt, Regina Fishman.

Camp owner Kapitannikova, meanwhile, was put on suicide watch at a Catskills hospital where her other son, Max, who was in another car behind the one that crashed, was being treated for shock, a pal said.

Some dumb a$$ guy randomly came in & stabbed her to death He told detectives he took a knife & went to Mcdonalds "with the specific intent to hurt a female"...the victim was about to turn 18. Judge gets 4 years for exposing himself

BRISTOW, Okla. - A former judge convicted of exposing himself while presiding over jury trials by using a sexual device under his robe was sentenced Friday to four years in prison.

Donald Thompson had spent almost 23 years on the bench and had served as a state legislator before retiring from the court in 2004. He showed no reaction when he was sentenced.

At his trial this summer, his former court reporter, Lisa Foster, testified that she saw Thompson expose himself at least 15 times during trial between 2001 and 2003. Prosecutors said he also used a device known as a penis pump during at least four trials in the same period.

Thompson, 59, was convicted last month of four felony courts of indecent exposure for incidents that took place in his Creek County courtroom.

Thompson, a married father of three grown children, testified that the penis pump was given to him as a joke by a longtime hunting and fishing buddy.

"It wasn't something I was hiding," he said.

He said he may have absentmindedly squeezed the pump's handle during court cases but never used it to masturbate.

Foster told authorities that she saw Thompson use the device almost daily during the August 2003 murder trial of a man accused of shaking a toddler to death. A whooshing sound could be heard on Foster's audiotape of the trial. When jurors asked the judge about the sound, Thompson said he hadn't heard it but would listen for it.

Police built a case against the judge after a police officer testifying in a 2003 murder trial saw a piece of plastic tubing disappear under Thompson's robe. During a lunch break, officers took photographs of the pump under the desk.

Investigators later checked the carpet, Thompson's robes and the chair behind the bench and found semen, according to court records.

Carmelia Brossett, a senior probation officer for the state Department of Corrections, said in a presentencing report that Thompson refused to undergo psychosexual testing.

"Thompson's denial of the offense would likely present difficulty, if not inability for treatment providers to provide meaningful and beneficial sex-offender treatment," she said.

The jury recommended a sentence of one year in prison and a $10,000 fine on each count. The jury foreman has said it was the jury's intent that Thompson serve the full sentence.

Judge C. Allen McCall denied a defense motion asking that Thompson be allowed to remain free pending an appeal. Thompson was also ordered to pay a $40,000 fine

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A judge in the District of Columbia has dismissed a case against a dry cleaner who was sued for $54 million in damages over a pair of missing pants.

Roy L. Pearson, an administrative law judge, originally sought $67 million from the Chung family, owners of Custom Cleaners. He claimed they lost a favorite pair of his suit trousers and later tried to give him a pair that he said was not his.

Custom Cleaners did not violate the city's Consumer Protection Act by failing to live up to Pearson's expectations of the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign displayed in the store window, Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled.

Pearson claimed that a sign was an unconditional warranty that required the defendants to honor any claim by any customer without limitation.

He calculated the amount of damages by estimating years of violations, then adding almost $2 million in common-law claims for fraud.

The Chungs denied Pearson's allegations and insisted that the pants were the same pair he brought in to be altered in May 2005.

Pearson represented himself during a two-day trial earlier this month and claimed millions of dollars in attorney fees and millions more in punitive damages for what he claimed was fraudulent advertising.

The Chungs' attorney argued that no reasonable person would interpret the sign to mean an unconditional promise of satisfaction, and Bartnoff agreed.

In a 23-page finding of fact, Bartnoff wrote: "A reasonable consumer would not interpret 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' to mean that a merchant is required to satisfy a customer's unreasonable demands or accede to demands that the merchant has reasonable grounds to dispute."

Pearson had "not met his burden of proving that the pants the defendants attempted to return to him were not the pants he brought in for alteration," the judge concluded.

Bartnoff awarded court costs to the Chungs, who have spent tens of thousands of dollars on the case. They are attempting to have their attorney's fees paid by Pearson.

"Judge Bartnoff has spoken loudly in suggesting that, while consumers should be protected, abusive lawsuits like this will not be tolerated," the Chungs' attorney, Christ Matting, said. "Judge Bartnoff has chosen common sense and reasonableness over irrationality and unbridled venom."

Soo Chung said during the trial that "economically, emotionally and healthwise as well, it has been extremely hard for us." She started the business with her husband after they moved to the United States in 1992.

It's not known whether Pearson will appeal the ruling.
