I was out test driving cars again the other day and I ran into a 1.8 turbo Gti. I like this car a lot. Very simple but nice styling. And it was pretty fast too. Come with 180hp. I figure 300hp wouldn't be to hard to get. I was just wondering what people have heard about this car. And does anyone know if the 2.8vr6 is a better option? I'm liking the lightweight 1.8 turbo. Just curious.

Golf 4 model had a 1.8 115 bhp engine. New Golf 5 car wil get a 2.0 Liter FSI turbo with 200 bhp

My bad has a 180 bhp turbo engine the mark 4 GTI, still not faster then my Celi smile.gif

VR6 (2.8 liter) has about 177 BHP and the mark 4 V6 (204 BHP). Both faster then my celi frown.gif
For the Golf 4 there was not a VR6 only the R32 (3.2 l) and V6 2.8
Dont know the difference between VR6 and V6

Hate VW golf because 1 in 4 cars u see here is a Golf. Its been a done deal here. Can be different in the US tho!!! A VW Golf is a simple universal designed car !

my friend has a GTi 1.8t Rabbit aniversary edition. the car is solidly built and is GREAT, i like the car alot and it has tons of pep. handling is good, probably better than a celica, but the car is a bit on the hefty side. it doesnt really respond too well to modifications and i think 300HP isnt going to be very cheap or reliable out of that motor. the Recaro seats in the Rabbit edition are awesome smile.gif

I like the interior and the looks and all but the reliability of them sucks. My friend ran a 9.75 in the 1/8 mile and only 69mph. Stock they aren't really all that quick about as fast as a civic si, maybe a little bit quicker.

1.8L Turbo 20V... that alone strikes the "cool" factor with me. Let me also say... the engine is almost the same thing as they use in the older Audi TT...

I like them...

the 1.8T vs. the VR6 debate has gone on for quite some time. The best advice to you is to go here

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=4

and read and read and read. There is massive info on the MKIVs there

buddy unless you have a gt4 you cant take a 1.8t.

both my friends have gtis, a 2k4 VR6 and a 2k3 1.8t. From a stop the vr6 wins by a good amount, from a roll at 30 the vr6 wins by a tirelength due to lack of power in 3rd gear.

they both have mods but either way they are alot faster then any celi that doesnt have a swap/turbo or a 3s.

the celi in noway throws you back in its seat like a vr6 does.

anyway i hate VW. if you want a cruise car look elsewhere, their handling sucks, way to top heavy. their weight is a killer, wiring issues up the ass and need i go on. Oh forgot you need high test gas on ****ty gas milage.

They said the small turbo is for quick spoolling, which would work fine I think. I'm more interested in an all over fast car, not a drag car. I'm just hoping they come out with an AWD turbo soon. If not, I'll just half to get the R32.

It seems to me that with a 20v head, you could have some real tunability there. I'm not sure how tunable they are, but that's the biggest factor in buying one for me. I'm taking batman's advice and I'm going to read as much as I can about them. I like them a lot for the fact that they're so simple looking, and kind of boxy. But the interiors on those things are just beautiful. Thanks for all the advice guys, keep it coming if you have more.

Engines all work on the same principle... so all engines are "tuneable"... one not more so than the other. It's all about how much $$ you have to build them. 20V head = LOTS of intake valve surface = VERY efficient power under boost...

Well if you paid attention to my signature before starting your post wink.gif
Looked at the stats and my car is exactly the same as the 1.8T so its not faster, stock anyway:)

i know its small for quick spooling, imo it sucks that you cant get much more power over stock.

my car is making a little more than 100hp over stock, and i am still on the stock turbo with CA 91 oct crap gas

as for turbo AWD, look into the 1.8t A4 quattro.

VW isnt really a great choice. It may look like a sweet car, but they arent THAT reliable, and when something breaks, you will be spending ****loads of money.

hmm im not sure about all the reliability stuff... im sure if you mod it like any car the reliability will naturally decrease, but in stock form i know 3 of my friends including the one with the Rabbit, have had no problems except standard wear and tear.

eh, still not a fan of VW/Audi.

ever notice VW lights are always out. all my friends and people around this area have vws with atleast 1 headlight out or a tail light. my buddy has his 2k4 and his lights already died.

I dunno they are ok, I would take an Audi over a VW becuase the VW doesnt give you that sports car feel with bucket seats and what not, more of a bus driver seat how you sit up high and ****.

is the engine bay of the VW 1.8 as crowded as the audi A4 1.8t???
my buddy has one of those, has done some standard mods, but i guess you basically gotta get a turbo kit to break the next level.edit:(or source parts)
