Man.....I think I will start saving up for a 3sgte engine next! WISH ME LUCK ON THAT ONE! LoL Just wanted to let you guys know that I enjoy my "new" celica so much and with the exhaust and intake, I love it even more.

I'm not technically minded so this might sound a bit of a stupid question but if i don't ask then I'll never know.

How can one exhaust make a hugh difference in the performance of the car over another if the engine stays the same???

Please baffle me somebody as I am really interested in getting into this subject again and would love to know the insand outs of all these mods and what they do and why they are so great!

Teach me!

The stock exhaust was made with noise restriction in mind. It restricts air flow which causes lost power.
With an aftermarket exhaust, like the Greddy SP, noise is a second hand concern(there is a legal limit). Air flow is greater through the use of larger diameter piping.

The more air an engine can flow, the more power it can produce.

yea I think this was covered in Sport Compact....

exhaust doesn't give you the horsepower, it realeases the

power that the engine allready had....

Modern Combustion engines run on a four stroke cycle. On the power phase, combustion occurs forcing the piston downwards. The downward motion turns the cranksaft that powers the car forward. Engines typically have at least 4 pistons attched to the crankshaft, gaurenteeing continues power to the car. when set of pistons are being pushed down another set will be in a different cycle.

After combustion has occured there is a exhaust phase. where spent gases are expelled from the engine. Your engine power phase helps the other cylinders prepares for combustion, which means moving the piston up to expell gases during the exhaust phase. If there is resistance from forcing the pistons up to expel exhaust gases, then you will rob power from your pistons on the power phase. This of course will rob potentional HP from your engine.

A exhaust system or free flow muffler will help incrementally with our st and gt cars though i doubt you get much more then 3-4 hp gain. The real difference will come if you ad a turbo system or a 3sgte. You should get gains of what 20HP? Most people really only put on a new muffler for looks and the sound anyways

When say gains of 20 hp...you mean from the exhaust itself? Or just from putting in the 3sgte tongue.gif

A 3SGTE with a stock exhaust vs 3SGTE with aftermarket. You would gain 20(or so) hp by using the am instead of the stock.

Well now I'm starting to save for a 3sgte engine smile.gif I really wanna get this car scooting...and since summer vacation is coming up...if I work a lot and save my $$$ I might be able to afford most of the engine. I'm gonna save around 5-6k. I know a guy that will dump in a new engine for me for around 500 bucks and he is a well known mechanic in the area. He is just gonna do it outta the shop at his house. So back yard GARAGE PROJECT! Oh and I will take pictures of my nice lil Exhaust and Injen Intake. ALSO, when I took out my air filter box, there is like a hole on the right wall under the hood that my filter is pointing too. Is that were the air comes in? And should my filter be touching it or is it fine a couple inches away?

Stock exhausts are restrictive. That i know for sure but what i don't understand is custom/am exhausts. With custom/am exhausts do they increase hp or free up the flow or releases the power the engine already have or do all?

not to sound like a d*ck, but couldn't you have started saving before buying the intake and exhaust, which would have been a big leap and which will be pointless when you get your 3s. Just wondering. The intake more than anything else, I can understand, but the exhasut is kinda pointless.

true, thats 500 or so that could have gone toward the swap. but maybe he got those things to hold him over until the big swap. regardless a 3 inch universal might have been a better choice in the long run... ahh well wink.gif

I had a hole in my exhaust LOL Thats why I needed one. When my bud checked it out he said I needed a new one because we had a rotting smell in my car from the hole. So either case I needed it. And I only spent 400 for the greddy system smile.gif
