As of now my car has 94,000mi and I found out that the first owner never changed the damn timing belt (I asked him). Well now I think that I need to change the timing belt cuz he was supose to do it at 60,000mi. So I called up toyota and they gave a price quote on timing belt and water pump around 460$. But now there is a cupon which I can use to get them to change the timing belt (without changing water pump) for 286$. I think its a pretty good deal. But my question is, should I replace the water pump now. I have 1.8 liter engine and I think that the water pump is not driven by the timing belt and that its diven by (generator/ac pump) belts. So I was thinking just to change timing belt at toyota dealer and if my water pump fails do the water pump myself cuz its not too much work. So please give me some feed back on this.

I would have both done at the same tme, or have them swap the belt and when you get it back put in the pump, just easyer to have it done at once then when every you get around to it.

another thing, how do the water pump break. I mean how will I know that its done (I am guessing the temp gauge will go up) but are there any other signs. For now I just dont feel like giving toyota 480$ for the timing-water pump change and I dont feel like spending a day changing water pump (cuz I'll need to take off them belts) and drain coolans/put coolant back in. I would do it if I had a garage but the problem is that I dont have one and all the **** that I do is done in the parking lot of my appartment.
Right now my plan is to change the ac/steering pump/alternator belts and change the valve cover gasket and bring the car to toyota. And since they will be changing the timing belt they will have to take all the the belts off and they will put them back on the right way (probably better than me). And then in the future if the water pump brakes I will just go to toyota or any other shop and ask them to change it, it should be easy cuz they wont have to take the timing belt off. -------------------- <<AKA THA RUSSIAN>>

You'll know if the water pump stops working. In the 5sfe engines (GT) if the water pump goes it tends to rip you timing belt apart eating the thing and then your engine just drops dead. On the St's tho im not too sure. The water pump is run by a different belt. |

the water pump is normally run off the timing belt. its really a good idea to do the belt, pump and thermostat at the same time. if the pump goes in the future, it could be the end of your motor.
i would take that cupon in with u and try to get a better deal. if they are willing to get to the belt for 286$ then they shouldnt charge you a whole lot more to swap out the pump, since they will be working in that area anyway -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Yea I kno, but its Toyota Dealer ship and all they care about is $$$. I dont know why they would charge me WORK $$$ if I wanted them to change the other belts (cuz they still have to take them off and put back on when they do the timing belt) its just weird.

they should charge u anymore for those belts ...just talk to them
and having the water pump go on you is worse then the timing belt breaking, so really make sure they do that too . -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Well after a little bit of thinking and going to "a russian owned shop" and getting a quote for timing belt+water pump+all seals+coolan+work=330$. I am gonna get it done there. And since I already bought all the belts(exept timing) and the valve cover gasket, I am gonna make him do all of that too cuz he still has to take all that **** off to put on the timing belt.
