painting interior dash / pics Options

I finally have some free time since I just quite my second job so i decided to do a small project with the interior - i want to paint it white - so I now have taken out most of the parts that will be painted except for the ac vents which I will do last . I'm using duplicolor white spray cans. Here's what I have done so far.





i'll probably end up replacing the carpet too while i'm at it - and maybe replacing the seats - but i don't want to dip into my engine swap money

make sure you wipe the parts clean so that your paint don't bubble up. good luck and hope to see the results

yeah, clean them well with rubbing alcohol

the pieces look good so far, if your looking to save money, just go buy some of that spray paint for fabric at Autozone. Its like 5 dollars a can, and will total to like 20-25 dollars. Its a cheap nice fix if your looking to save money for that swap.

we'll it was kinda windy and chilly this morning so didn't have time to paint anything ouside - but i decided to do something else - i copied the idea from another member on here but forgot who it was - once i find out i'll give credit to where credit is due - or if any one knows feel free to say so --

in the process i tried painting the cluster panel but the paint didn't stick too well - maybe i need a different type of paint for plastic - but i thought the carpet and vinyl would do the job - or maybe the temperature was too cold - so i had to peel and wash off the paint -

fabric paint isn't goin to work for plastic......

use duplicolor paint works great

he said he is already using duplicolor white... great job man, everything looks good so far, and the gauges are very unique

yeah duplicolor has one for carpet and vinyl printed on the front of the can - but in the back of the can it also says for plastic too -
well i just checked out duplicolor website and this is what i found

A. Clean plastic with a water and ammonia based detergent solution, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Next use Dupli-Color? Wax and Grease Remover (CM541) to remove any silicone. Dupli-Color? offers paints intended for plastic application such as our Bumper Coatings, Vinyl and Fabric Colors and Trim Paint. For maximum adhesion, some plastics may require Dupli-Color? Adhesion Promoter (CP199).


so i may need to buy the Ahesion Promotor - luckily the cans at autozone only cost 4.99 each

I used regular paint for my plastic pieces all you need to do is spray a couple of mist coats over the plastic after you finish your cleaning steps.

Spray a couple of mist coats once each dries spray normally.

thanks for the advice - i stopped by autozone on my lunch break to get Ahesion Promotor - and went home to test it out - it suggested 2-3 coats before color - so I did 2 coats - five minutes in between each - had the fan blowing at it to help speed things up - then a mist coat of white - 10 minutes later it actually held alot better - followed by the second - and i was amazed - this will surely help speed up the project with the other pieces - or maybe it was warmer outside than when i had tried it in the mornig -


i am using the Dupli-Color® High Performance Vinyl & Fabric Coating - which indicates Formulated with a maximum adhesion promoter so there’s no need for primer. It’s fast drying and won’t crack, peel or chip -- but still it was coming out bubbly and not sticking very well -- whether the weather had anything to do with it or not i still would use the Adhesion Promotor first

lol, im not much of a fan of anime, but i still dig your cluster...id feel weird driving in the car with my mom or girlfriend, but other then that, its nice. Im anxious to see how all this turns out....

well i'm glad i don't have the problem with my mom ever being in my car - even if she is, she wouldn't say anything - as for my gf, she's open minded although she hasn't seen it yet . - i think i'm half way done with the pieces - sucks waiting for the pieces to dry after each coat - the worst part is the top clear coat - its a small can that cost the same as the color cans -

how'd you do that to your gauges, with the pictures? thats hot.

using MS Word - printing out on blank transparencies - just gotta size the pictures to fit onto the gauges - and then cut them out and lay them over your gauges - got the idea from another member on here - but not sure how he/she did it - i just thought thats how it was done -- oh one more thing - gotta have laser jet color printer - inkjet won't do -

tip - print it out black and white on regular paper and resize until it fits -

here is a pic of the gauges - i won't be able to finish by this weekend as I wanted too since I have to go out of town with the celica -- here comes another 1400+ miles --



i think i'm also gonna paint the steering wheel hub part - haven't really taken a deep look about it - hopefully i don't have to remove the steering wheel

yo, im not much into the anime scene but i really dig that dash. Im gonna try that. does the inkjet ink not stick to transparencies or something?

i doubt that inkjet will stick - at least 2 that i've tried did not - canon and hp -- you'll have better luck with laser.

the way i did it was - i had print out the pictures onto regular white copy paper and took it to a printing service (using your own transparencies or theirs) to make a photo copy onto transparency.

just gota remember to remove them when you go in for inspection - other wise i don't think you would pass

good idea - i think i will do that - when i find good pictures --

actually i will be making lots of replaceable sets - that way i can change them every now and then -- k now to find initial d pictures online

if any one has good quality pictures of initial d - let me know since so far - can't find anything well worth putting on --

lol, i dont like takin off my dash, its such a pain getting the gauges back in to that oblong hole. You have to manuever it just right.

i will be redoing them this weekend to replace the images with another one - i'll take step by step pictures as to how i do them- and this time around it may be a bit different because i want to have a template available that way it'll be easier to create the images so I wouldn't have to resize to fit -- i gave the camera to the gf - so i'll need to borrow my friends camera

basic idea is to use transparencies (the one teachers use on projectors) and by using a laser printer to print - inkjet does not have a permanent stay - colors smear -

i'll probably do a how to and ask moderators to add to sticky - while in the process i will be replacing my interior carpeting this weekend too
