hey guys,

due to resources in parts and money i have decided to do the ST 185 swap rather than the ST205. I have done so much research on the ST205 that i have completely neglected looking into the ST185.

I have tried the search and there is alot of scathered information on the 2nd gen swap, so im hoping that all questions and answers can be dedicated to this thread.

so here are some question that i have:

-what kinda tranny is best for this swap? will a sw20 mr2 tranny work?
-what axles are needed if the tranny is swapped out?
-what kinda modifications are needed to dropped the motor/tranny in? will it bolt right up?
-what about the harness? does it plug in?
-is there a big difference in the OEM motor and the JDM motor? does it make a difference during the swap?
-what fuel pumps are you using as injectors?

i know some of you guys completed this swap sucessfully, please give me your input. if it's not asking too much how about a write up on this.

thanks for all the help

thanks for the links guys, helped alot.

i am looking to use a e153 tranny w/lsd. has anyone done this? i know the tranny and motor (st185) bolts right up but what about the axles??

if there is a better tranny option please let me know. the reason i want to use the e153 tranny is because of the clutch kit. other than the axles will there be any modifications to the tranny??

for those that have done it what is the common problem that you guys ran into??

thanks

TRUE or FALSE?? about the 2nd gen 3sgte swap

-when you use the e153 tranny you do not have to modify the tranny?
-the axles will have to be modified, using sw20 (mr2) inner axles and all-trac (90-93 st185) outers?
-you can use 94-99 celica GT shifter cables with the e153 tranny?
-GT motor mounts will work fine for the st185 and e153 set-up?

thanks for the help

-you can use 94-99 celica GT shifter cables with the e153 tranny? true but i believe its better and feels more natural to use the st205 ones
-GT motor mounts will work fine for the st185 and e153 set-up? false...the only mount u can use is the passengers side and possibly the front one from what i hear...but like i said just grab the st205 mounts and ur set

thanks for the info,

as for the shifter cables, the GT and ST205 cables will work fine but the ST205 cables will be the perfer ones to use. I know the GT cables bolt straight up so how about the ST205 cables?? do you need any type of modification for them to work??

thanks

for those using the GT tranny and st185 motor, just curious on what clutch are you using?

Generally, people use a stock 5SFE clutch disc, with a 3SGTE pressure plate and throwout bearing. This works fine, but technically doesn't make use of all the room on the 3SGTE flywheel face, so some people order a custom clutch kit from a company called "Spec" (I think), basically it's a 3SGTE clutch with splines on disc to match the GT tranny input shaft.
