OK, While tearing the engine down I came acrossed something. While taking the rod caps off I noticed that the #1 and #4 caps where different then the #2 and #3. My question is should they be different, or did someone take my engine apart once and put it back together wrong?

On the connecting rods you have the little notches that the bears that allow them to seat. To my understanding those notches should be facing oppisite ends. They are on the #2-#3 rods. The #1-#4 rods they are facing each other. Is this something Toyota does or did someone put them in wrong?

I can post pictures if I am not clear of my question.

Thank you.

we also just noticed that the top of the block has numbers.... 2 2 3 3.. next to each cylinder.... but we noticed that the rod caps didn't match that... they were set up as 3 2 2 3... should those line up as well??

anyone know? I really need to know this soon ... Thank You!

Well the engine is back in... but went to start it.. and it would turn but not start.... So we looked at the distributor and it was off by 180 degrees... so we pulled the valve cover off and noticed that the timing was off by 12 degrees... I know we had it set when we were re assembling the engine.. so we aren't sure if the timing belt slipped.. or if it somehow got off before we dropped it in the car....

anyone have any hints or ideas.. please let me know

I am also wondering about the temp sensor... when I got in the car... when the car was off, the Temp gauge pegged on H and so the fans cut on.... but its random... cuz like right now the car is off and its not doing that... so not sure if thats a mixed up wire or not.

Thanks guys :-)

We reset the timing... but it may be off a notch... but the engine will still not start...

does anyone know if we are missing something.... ie the ECU reset? something with an alarm? any ideas??

Thank you :-)

Check your timing again. If the car doesn't crank... you can manually jump the starter to crank it. From the cranking stage... check fuel, check spark, etc.

recheck all the ignition system wires... a lose one can cause u to think you have alot worse problems then just a lose wire..

Check your timing again. Then check spark on all four. Then Check and make sure your getting fuel. Start with all the small things, if this doesnt work, just give me your car. No but seriouslly, it's normally something small.

Heres one thing, Do not use the book as a guide but a reference only. You might want to check that you got the 2 cams right when you set them back in the head. Its a little different from the two-true-cam models. Cause they actually run off of each other to do this and that by gear and not timing belt. Another thing you might want to look at is if the distrubotor was put back in correctly. You might have put it back in reverse such as the rotor pointing to the spark plug 1 when you took it off and then you put it back on at sparkplug 4 instead which screws the whole ignition set up.

i was looking through the haynes manual troubleshooting and it said that I should check the Cold Start Switch... It says the sensor is down on the back of the block right next to the water temp sensor... I am thinking we have them switched... does anyone have a picture of that so I can see if we have it right or not?

Are you getting fuel pressure? Buy a $30 fuel pressure gauge from Jeg's, T it off between the fuel filter and fuel rail.

Another idea, hook up a volt meter and make sure the fuel pump is working (have you messed with it recently?).

Pulls the plugs, check for fuel.

Have you tried roll starting it? Once you get it started, figuering out it's issues will be much easier.

And the rod caps are supposed to be differently sized like so.

update... just wanted to let ya all know the car is running... it turned out to be the ignition timing... his dad came over... played with the distributer and poof.. started...

the only thing now is their is a slight noise... and he said it was a lifter... just from the engine being out of the car so long.. i hope everything is ok with it.. I don't want to go through this again :-(

Thank you everyone for the help!

If it was making a clicking noise then yes it is most likely a lifter. My 7a's lifters made lots o noise. I dunno about that though (makeing the noise casue the engine was out for so long). Make sure you keep an ear on the noise and make sure it goes away, if it doesnt then ur going to have to tear it apart and get the lifter replaced or adjusted.

after my swap ive been having that same problem with the oil pressure light. Havent figured it out yet but it only does it when the oil gets warm enough, like getting off the highway or after a long drive, but when i rev it up, it goes away.

as for your lifter noise, run some seafoam through your gas, you can pick up a can of it from any autozone for like 5 bux, i think you use a half can on a full tank but dont qoute me. that should help your lifter noise, they r prob just sticking a little, mine were too.
