What's up 6g!!! I have a ST which 140 on the dash. I know that cars have restrictors on them and stuff, but damn I topped out at like 120mph. I found this out when I was on the highway racing my friends hemi powered Charger on the way to a business meeting. You guys know who won that one. : laugh.gif I was wondering if the ST was supposed to "cut off" at that 120 mark or if there is something wrong with my car.

there is a hard limiter at about 115-125mph depending on the size of your tires. Not all speedo's are perfectly accurate... but yes... it is limited. The car barely has enough power to make it up there anyways... hehe

Ha ha!!!! Thanks for your reply. I was beginning to think that no one was out there. If I got someone to take it off would that hurt my car?

the actual rpm limit isn't much more than 120mph anyways... and I don't reccomend you doing it or anything.

6GC speedometer goes up to 150 wink.gif
IPB Image

You can temporarily disable it by interupting the speed signal to the ECU, but good luck getting the car to go much faster.

good link Alex, I was going to post that.

Art, you are 100% correct smile.gif

also, the car only goes that fast for a reason, any further pushing above the "max" can cause serious internal damage. It is designed to be a economy vehicle, not a performance machine wink.gif

why are you trying to drive so fast with a 115 hp car anyways. i'm sorry but our cars are slow. do a swap if you want, but i've accepted the fact that my car will never be fast. so just as long as people never find out how slow it actually is, i'm happy. "turn heads driving slow." something my car is extremely good at.

Don't know how fast I go (Broken speedo), but I've hit 6krpm in 5th gear on my 3S-GE several times. Fun, but dangerous, even though the car feels very stable.

I think the fastest I have hit was 100 mph in my GT, and that was probably for only a few seconds. I think getting up to 120 is pretty risky esp in the ST...I woulda been crossing my fingers that I was not gonna crash or bust the engine up.

There's a WWII airfield near me that has infeilf race track and a central 2 1/2 mile landing strip that we test construction machines on and my JDM import indicated 140mph untill I ran out of airstrip, realise that this is realistically maybe closer to 130 but this is with a 3fe engine not beams.

Didn't hit a limiter of any description though, anyone know what revs the limiter hence max theoretical is for the 140hp 3fe powered car?

at those speeds the spedometer can be off by 10% or more, so that 125 may have really been 115 wink.gif

agreed. A quote that my brother told me, "Turn heads driving slow."

Driving at 120 mph was exciting yet scary. The only reason I was driving that fast was because my friend and I was running late for a business meeting. No cars were on the highway so the only death involved would be mine as the hemi-powered charger was like eight car lengths ahead. tongue.gif I really don't intend on doing this again unless an emergency happened. I just thought the car would do at least like 130mph though.

Oh and I was wondering why would crismillencolin 3sge cut off at 112 and my ST at 120?

I believe all JDM vehicles are limited to that speed. I know mine is supposed to cut off around that same speed, but since my speedo don't work, I don't have a limiter. biggrin.gif

I'll check with the guy who imported my 3sfe, most of the card he imports are modified already so maybe limiter was removed already.

Didn't seem like a lot left but definately no limiter.
Next time will check with GPS.

anyone else used gps to check how far out the std speedo is?

Theres only 2 major places where the cops hang out, northbound right after RIDC right where the hillside ends and the guardrail begins.

And Southbound at the Creighton onramp right where the mountain cuts out at the bottom of the hill. You have to do your high speed runs from the top to the bottom, but slow down before you reach the onramp. Believe me, I know what I'm doing lol

Sounds like (and felt like to me) that the Celica is easily capable of handling high speeds, the GT4 is designed to get a battering from dirt track roads at rediculous speed sou the drivetrain and chasi on the lower models shouldn'y be far off.

I agree with 120mph in a 70 limit is too fast, you'll rapidly approach some old biddy in her caddy doing 55 in the middle lane, but on the Autobahn... (switch to Kph thinking) I regularly visit a supplier in Elchingen, southern germany and always get a BMW 3 or audi A3/4 as a hire car, it's perfectly normal and quite safe to sit at 200Kph when there's no trafic and no intersections. Had nearly 240Kph out of a hire BMW 735 once.
I reckon the Celica would handle 190Kph for good distance once you got it there.

Since when do Celica's have a speed limiter on them. I know the JDM cars are limited to 180km/h but in Holland there arent any limiters.

now here is something really stupid when i first bought the celica off my dad i thought it was the fastes car in the world so the first couple of months i would go to my village.which is about 200 km from athens and no cars . i would try to get the car up to 125 and because i was so stupid and didnt know anything about cars i would keep trying it and it would always cut me off
finally i asked my cousin who is a mechanic and is nearly killed me telling that im lucky as hell the engine didnt blow up in my face
and he kinda beat up when i told him i had gotten cut off while in 3rd but only once.
Thank god now i know havent tried since and the celi is still alive i hope

i've done 105 to keep this car from gaining on me, the pos lookin focus had two guys in it, and me all by myself and they blew past me. sounded stock and looked beat up. And I was like WTF?! My car felt very stable at that speed but was freakin loud. The road was flat or I would have never passed 90.

QUOTE(BlackSTX @ Mar 18, 2006 - 12:31 PM)

My ST Auto will barely hit 100. I had to turn off the O/D and go downhill and finally hit 105.

Same with mine...it would take over a mile to get to like 95...downhill it would reach 100. kindasad.gif Now it's a different story...I don't even have to floor it and it gets to 100 in the blink of an eye...but I don't think I even let it go past 105, LOL. I was like, "SCREW THIS". tongue.gif

Mine goes 230km/h (142mph) Speedo goes to 280km/h
When the swap is finished i cant reach beyond 245km/h because the gears are to short.

Can you do something to your gears to allow your car to achieve everything on your dash?
I had miscalculated.
@6000 RPM the speed will be 245km/h 7000 RPM gives 260km/h Maybe I will get another final drive or a different 5th gear. I.E 5th gear of the st205 is 0.703 where the st202 has 0.820

ive gotten my GT up to 130 mph, once i hit that i was shaking, both hands on the wheel seatbelt on, tensed up and i had to slow down it was just too scary and dangerous, id rather go 0-105 on the track, thats where the thrill is

Kodak- I hit 133MPH at that S-curve past my house I was telling you about. I hope that story wasn't the inspiration for you trying to hit top speed in you're car LOL.
We have already lost another (7th Gen GTS) Celica after he got to 132MPH trying to beat my record. Now in retrospect it was pretty stupid but trying to hold 133MPH and take a picture with my digital camera of my gauges while negotiating an S-curve and bouncing off the 7K rev limiter is a f*cking rush!!!!!
Before ya'll beat me up - there is only cows and trees to kill out where I was at - no houses or anything so the risk was to myself and nature.
Please no one attempt to beat any of the times on here - we are all retarded for trying this stuff.
BTW - my old '95 GT Auto had a higher top speed than the '99 5-speed - 140MPH.

my gt got up to 127mph and i didnt top it out, i was scared a cop would stop me, so i kept it at 120 (i was late to my admissions test to college, and i was 2 hours away from my destination wit only 1 hour of time and made it in 1.15). i was on a kinda curvy desert road wit no body around. and i can say the car was really good at handiling those speeds, i wish it could go faster, i am actually pissed it doesnt go faster than like 130 is my aproximation. i think the engine can go faster if we had a longer or an extra gear, and id love that.

You're right. The engine doesn't really determine top speed - the gearing does. That's why my '95 Auto GT went a little faster than my '99 5-Speed GT.
BTW - My car was extremely[u] stable on that banked S-curve at 133MPH. I did it again on the way home so that I could enjoy it rather than trying to take a pic. I steered it with 1 finger through the worst part of the switch back on the S-curve. Effortless.
And yes I had my hand poised to grab the wheel in case there was any problems.

well, this is sad but I deserve it. I got my st like two month ago. so I did all the proper preventive mantainence ( gaskets, filters sparkplugs belts etc. )
at the body shop they said that the engine was in mint condition specially B/C it had 166 K when I got it
so Stupid me I heard engine - mint on the same sentence and took the car for a test dirve I can say I reached 125 MPH
results:

two of my headlamps got hit with stones ( they have a little hole on them)
I need a new engine, the car still runs but the engine sounds like SH$$ T It has a knocking noise inside so now my celica is parked for me being stupid.
but well I'll get a swap done on it and I learned my lesson
