clunking rear?, check this out Options

Do some of you have a really bad and loud clunking in the rear? Does it sounds like you have some loose 2x4 in the trunk?

Does everything seems to be tight and secure when you check it out?

Are your strut and sway bar and bearing plates in good condition?

And finally is your celica an early 6th gen?

If yes, theres a high chance the problem is with the rear suspension arms, they don't use bushing they use spherical bearing at the ends, and those over time get used and loosy. For fun go outside and kick with moderate force the front and rear of the rims, if you see the wheel move and hear a dull "clunk", maybe its time to replace the whole arms to be clunk free

I recently bought a 6th gen and had a 5th gen with the same problem. And thought I'd share the information with you, cause it seems every post about clunking never mention the suspension arms as being a possibility.

I mention it every time I reply to a rear-end clunk post --- since my rear end suspension clunk is coming from a rear arm, and since I spent about a grand replacing my strut mounts and struts because a Toyota technician told me that it wasn't the suspension arms....

ahhh. nice info man! i have speed bumps in my neighborhood and ive had my car for a year or so. started hearing clunking noises about 4 months ago..couldnt figure it out. and i go about 15 - 20 mph over the bumpers. (stock car..) is it possible for the front to be the same as well?

man.. you've solved my problem! i was 100% sure they were my upper strut mounts.. hmm. maybe they aren't. but you seem to be right about that one.

I have that problem too, but I have an electronic box in my dash that emits sounds so you can't hear the clunking, so I don't bother with it.

i was playing around with the JDM part #'s on this site to check on prices and they have pretty good prices - i was suprise to find a GT4 hood for $354.11 not including S/H --

so i called the toll free # o the site and they informed me that the JDM parts are not normally in stock but shipping would be 10-15% (depending on size and weight) of the entire order amount -- so if i was to order just the hood than it'll be S/H would be an additional $54 -with about a 3 wk wait- a GT 4 HOOD for $400 man that is a great deal to me and here i was gonna order from http://www.takakaira.co.jp/ --

well i get the clinking when im driving slow, but it goes away when i brake. would i be in the catagory?

It's called "stereo" and you can get them at Best Buy, Circuit City, Crutchfield, etc. It's a nifty little gadget.

ALSO CHECK REAR SWAY BAR BUSHING! They may not look bad but they get hard and have alittle play and will cause some nasty clunking... i have found this problem on multiple 6th gens! The rubber bushings only costs 4$ each and there are two of them. To check them grab ahold of the rear sway bar under the car and yank it up and down ...if you have just alittle up and down play then you should change them.

While my car was getting rear springs installed, I had my mechanic put on sway bar bushings. That solved the problem. So I no longer need that entertainment box in my dash.

weird that the interior control arm (#487x0A) doesnt look the same as this one (#2) on this picture:

from the reference picture azian posted it seems you can change the bushing in the front arms, but you need whole arms in the rear arms...the part number is specified for the celica without the sport package.

in the 5th gen you need both new arms..this is wierd

K. I managed to locate the bushings for #2.. but I have a question.

For suspension arm #1.. is the bushing built in? Because if you look at the schematic picture above, there's no separate part for the bushing.
Is this the same as the knuckle (since there IS a bushing of some sort between the knuckle and the rear control arm).

Has anyone seen suspension arm #1?

I've read about this problem all over. I have an early 94 celica.

Ever since a bodyshop installed my Eibach Sportline's, my right rear makes a clunking noise whenever I go over any kind of bump. Could this be it?

First diagram posted is of a sixth-gen Celica -- note the No. 2 (rearmost) arm with the bulge. That bulge is the toe adjuster.

The second diagram is of the fourth-gen Celica, which had the rectangular No. 1 suspension arm, instead of the cylindrical arms Toyota started using in the 1990s, and in the fifth-gen Celica specifically.

Well, I contacted 1sttoyotaparts.com and they were very helpful. Apparently, the suspension arms come with the bushings already pressed in (and is included in their price). The bushing for the front arm of the rear suspension can be purchased separated (as denoted by the part #), but the rear arm bushing is only sold along with the arm.

well then, i guess my thread topic was not using the correct term, i had knocking noise, but clunking is what i should have used. I will try to save up and see if this works, im so tired of that noise i am about to go nuts. thanks for the info and help.

I've been having the same problem. I just put my Suspension Techniques swaybars and bushings a week ago and that solved the sway bar "thud" that I had been hearing since I bought the car. Just last night I started hearing a clunking sound from the back right side, nothing seems loose on any of the parts back there. While working on the sway bar we moved the control arm with the toe adjuster, could that be the problem? or could it be my end-link ball joints? I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it has to be 1 of those options

it was the exhaust pipe who was hitting 2 small rods underneath...dammit never saw that before

???sorry I dont know the name of those rods (they go from the suspension to the wheel hub)???


we discovered that those rods had some wear right under the exhaust pipe is (where the hitting was)

Well my clunking turned out to be my endlink slightly loose on the sway bar, so we're all good!

But now my front wheel bearing that I JUST replaced is going bad, grrrrrr!

i changed my rear suspention top mounts.. and sound stoped.

Hi - I just ordered 2 rubber bushings, I found that the easiest way to fit them was to put the rear wheels on the ramp. Then you undo the bracket that holds the stabilizing bushes. Pop em out and replace. Takes about 30mins total for this project.
