obviously it busted someone's bubble...the funny thing is, is that it's just a forum, you gotta read the whole topic not just a single statement.

^^ ughhh.... fix up a celi for performance... its a great idea. Outside of the toyota world alot of people dont think the 3sgte / mr2 / alltrac swap is common. I meen its not as common as most turbo swaps like sr20. so to have a built 3s motor under a celi hood would be a sleeper.

The guy obviously don't know about the 3sgte and 3sgte that came stock with celica..its not like all civic have more than 127 HP either...you can take it both ways..and the celica weight only 2500 lbs, thats a major plus if you compare it to many cars out there...and they dont know they said it was about 300 lbs heavier than newer ones, which isnt true.

I hate to say it but I'd agree with that guy
the 5s engine is a slug above 4500rpm
our chasis isn't stiff in the least
and I've never been a fan of FWD performance

our cars are just lookers (IMO)
and i say that with respect to North American 7A / 5S engines

I know the 6th gen was not meant to be a A class car but with some mod the 5sfe could be strong too.....right....? I don't own a 6th gen yet but its on my list as my next car purchase dont make me go the civic route... frown.gif

I hate to say it but dude is right. I just moved to Houston and there are tons of civics and supped up eclispes. I drive a ST and feel so inferior to those guys. But you know what? I don't care cause I love my car and spirit. I love the way it looks, drive, and etc. Sure I could save up and get a Supra(which I will do) but to have a 6g celica with a 3sgte is almost priceless to me. Why? Because its UNEXPECTED to the average tuner.

chanh ur funny man lol laugh.gif i want to reply to this thread also to let him know that buying a used celica and swapping in the 3S is still cheaper than buying a new civic Si but i cant seem to get that "confirmation e-mail"? oh and i hope he's not dissing on the 5sfte cuz im pretty sure he doesnt want manny over there tongue.gif

remy: dont get discouraged on buying a 6th gen man...sure its a bit on the sluggish side stock but with mods (usually boost) the 5sfe can be a beast. we actually have a member here who is doing 230hp 270tq on his 5sfte setup (manny is da man! lol) or u could always swap and have some serious power and potential.

So what if a 3S swap is cheaper than buying a new Civic Si, a 3S-swapped Celica isn't going to make it any better. Maybe in a straight-line, but other than that I can't think of anything else where the 3S-swapped Celica is better.

I actually agree with the so called "Celica hater" on the 5S-FE. It ain't a performance oriented engine, period.

well, make a choice you can get a car ( honda ) or you can get a lifetime hot ride ( celica ) my first car was a celica 1987 ( I still own it and love to ride it biggrin.gif ) my second car is a 95 ST looking forward to swap a 3SGTE in it and my girlfriends car It's gonna be a 7th gen celi.

I love Celica and I think that the 6th gen has the best looking desing I love my car and It has all the plus:

cheap, reliable, durable, economic, easy to fix, great looking, and when comes to power, try to drive a 3SGTE swapped car and you'll see why everyone here talks about it

Any Civic that doesn't see engine work, a turbo, or a swap isn't fast, at all. The same could be said about the Celica.

well the swap celica will be faster and have more potential than the civic Si overall w/ a lower price tag. im not going to compare a turbo motor to an N/A motor but pure HP-wise the 3SGTE can be pushed further, cheaper. thats all i was saying. also...i've driven alot of civics from bone stock to swapped out ones (jersey is full of 'em and my co-workers are all civic heads) and i'd take my celica's handling anyday imho.

not dissing the Si so dont get me wrong...its a very nice car and i dont deny that.

More potential to torque steer. biggrin.gif It'll be faster in the straights, but in the corners it won't be.

How did we get started on Celica's not being able to handle?

The nice thing about the celica--and I haven't driven many other cars like this--is it's very predicatbale, controllable, and forgiving at its limits, and that's what makes it an excellent touring car. When you push most cars to their limits of handling, acceleration, braking, etc, they turn into wild, uncharacteristically mushy cars. I can pull through a 90 degree bend at +40mph and 4500 rpms and be utterly confident that I'll come out straight and hard in my celica. The only other cars I've had wheel time in that behave that well are the Mazda Miata and the second gen RX-7 (both RWD (hell, both Mazda's)). Say what you want, I've managed to stave off (and usually leave in the dust) Imprezas, Supras, Mini Cooper S's and Trans Ams on real world backroads (some of the cars were driven by self proclaimed "auto cross" diehards).

The 5S is reliable, has a great powerband for cornering, but otherwise it doesn't have much potential. Big Woop. You drive a civic; everyone thinks you're gay.

Bias... but hey... oh well. As far as I'm concerned... you're hardly at the 6g Celica's limit based on your example... =] It's a good handling car, but hardly comparable to cars with actual sport suspension (I'd hardly call 4 corner macphearson struts sporty)... and hardly comparable to a Civic's handling potential (even the new ones, which have been tuned down extremely). It's a good handling car with modest potential... but it's not winning the FWD racing classes like the Civics, Integras and RSX's have in the past.
QUOTE

Matter of opinion, matter of fact. You really have to have driven all sorts of different cars with different suspension set-ups to their limits in order form an opinion. It's no surprise to me MOST guys here would argue for the Celica... but that's mostly because MOST guys here haven't driven another car, another set-up to the extreme. Daily driving hardly measures a car's handling ability. The Celicas have always been good handling cars, but why would they have even sportier counterparts (Super Struts versions) if they were cheddar to start?

Power isn't everything... putting it to the ground and controlling it are two very different things.

This thread has the potential to turn in to a flame war, so, please be courteous to others when responding.

Obviously, people on this forum are already biased about Toyota's, and for a good reason. Toyota = dependability, and performance in some of the more rare models.

People shouldn't be down about what we drive, performance aside, people who own a Celica/Supra/MR2 are a dying breed, Toyota doesn't release sports cars in the U.S. anymore. Be thankful for what you have.

I don't know why you should get offended at that guy's statement. It's true. I don't know about you guys, but I bought my Celica because I liked how it LOOKED...and it was cheap...something that can bepaid for in cash so it can be modded without worries of voiding warranties. If I would've wanted something fast, I would've bought a MKIV Supra. But I had a 530WHP MKIII, so it wasn't necessary. tongue.gif My point is...just chill...who cares about what they say? You all have gorgeous 6GCs that people see you on the road with and compliment you...and most don't know what car it is. biggrin.gif When do guys with Civics or other mainstream cars get complimented like that? EVERYBODY knows what a Civic looks like...no matter what year! wink.gif

It's not that Celica's can't handle, you could if you setup the car correctly, but I was pointing out that I don't see a 3S-GTE swapped Celica handling as good as a Civic Si through the corners.

And I too enjoy the handling on my Celica, especially with Yokohama AVS ES100's, but I've driven cars that put my Celica to shame. kindasad.gif

More potential to torque steer. biggrin.gif It'll be faster in the straights, but in the corners it won't be.

never thought i'd meet a 6g celica owner (i think u r right?) who doesnt like the handling on the celica. whatever floats ur boat buddy...if the Si is ur cup o' tea then thats cool too smile.gif

bboy

5GC owner, but since it's powered by a 6GC engine, I'm here because of it. wink.gif A regular Celica's handling I like, but a 3S-GTE swapped Celica's handling I won't like.

Forgetting all the talk on the other forum:
- as far as I remember Honda was first to introduce V-Tec engines which was followed by Toyota with VVT-i and then VVTL-i, so Hondas were more powerful than Toyotas
- Toyota had A group car - Celica, Honda - did not (correct me if I am wrong)
- Celica is much nicer looking than (any - IMO) Civic, actually it is also completely different car segment
- I drove many Celicas incl. 5gen 1.6, 6gen 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and GT4, 7gen 1.8 GT and GT-S - guess which one I liked most? definitely 2.0 and 2.0T (1.8 GT-S is nice too but does not live up to expectations)
- FWD, RWD or AWD? - all are good, depending what you need / want to do: FWD is reliable, RWD is fun drifting, AWD is ... the best
- who is right? anyone who loves his car, whatever this car is...
