hey gang,

just got back from the shop. the compressor and the dehydrator are leaking in my air conditioning system. total taxes in is just short of 1000$. has anyone successfully stripped the whole works from their Celica? what are the risks, if any? are there any other costs other than the labour to take the system out? this comes at a bad time since i am trying to get the bodywork done and put a coat of paint on the car in the next few days. all my "disposable" income is going towards that. i know i don't live in SoCal or FLA but we do get muggy weather here on the coast. i guess i could live without A/C until next summer. opinions and ponders on this question are more than welcome.

I removed my lines, condenser, receiver-dryer, and compressor since I didn't want to get new hard lines made to get my A/C working. It wasn't too hard and should provide better air flow to the radiator, plus the engine bay looks a lot cleaner. smile.gif

same here, i just roll down the windows, and open the moon roof. I need 100% performance cuz my car is normally only 75% of other cars out there lol

Plus A/C chews up gas

Yes, I just about die, because I'm totally a cold weather person. Ideal weather for me is 55 degrees and sunny. Anything above 80 and I suffer. When it breaks 100 around here and it's humid from the orchards, I feel sick, get bad headaches, and pretty much am miserable.

Coming back from a Tri Cities Celica meet I was puking because it was so hot, and I'd even drank water and Gatorade all day. frown.gif

i took everything related to my A/C out of the engine bay, compressor, hard lines, condensor. It wasnt that hard. you just need to go to an auto parts store and tell them you need a shorter alternator belt becuse you got rid of the compressor. they should know the right size, they did for me. the engine bay does look a lot cleaner and you do shave off some weight from the car.

thanks guys and gals. i may just leave it be for this simmer and see if i suffer too much. i luv the heat though. i am only happy when the sweat drips off my nose when i'm sitting in a lounger in the sun drinking a cold beer. i think it comes from dealing with our beautiful eastcoast canadian winters. lugging that extra weight seems a bit of a waste, but i will probably get the system overhauled next spring if nothing else comes along to lighten my wallet.

BTW minimal clothing should be worn at all times riding a Celica regardless of the engine. it just makes a hot looking car look even hotter (certain owners here on the 6gc can no doubt make it as hot as the surface of the sun-- i see halters and 6-packs oh, my!) and the ordinary citizen thinks the cars are even faster.

PS-- my car looks like crap now since i've started sanding, filling and have taken off the sideskirts and spoiler. hope to post a new "progress" thread soon.

You definitely gain power...just how much though I don't know. The A/C compressor puts almost no drag on the system when it's turned off because it has an on-off clutch. The power steering pump, however, pumps fluid throughout some lines and a power steering rack, and in doing so, introduces some drag onto the motor. And when the A/C is turned on, the drag is greatly increased, and is definitely noticable in our cars.

Not having AC isnt even an option down here. If its under 95 we'r lucky. In my s10 that i use to have we removed everything in preperation to make some room in the engine bay, it wasnt that bad, but man... it could get sooo hot at times. I think you should do it, the quote you had was really steep.

No A/C is really bad especially if you live in the hotter summer climates. I was driving the other day around Missouri and I just sweated my a55 off. I don't have an A/C compressor anymore, but I still maintain the pulley and the brackets that drives the A/C unit along with the P/S. ITs just easier this way cause I can take off the belt because the tensioner is still on the A/C bracket.
