my friends brother just got a new muffler on his civic and ive been thinking about getting a new muffler for my celica soon. keep in mind were pretty new to fixing up cars and were just learning about our cars. And i was wondering if after putting in a new muffler, would the celica pass CA smog? im assumeing it would pass since there are tons of people on the streets that have aftermarket mufflers, but just to make sure im asking you guys.

i believe cali smog is different from your standard emissions inspection. I believe its done the same way, but they look for other polutants....so idk, but it should be fine, i dont see how there could be a problem if the cats are all there and intact.

edit: im a ****ing moron, sorry didnt notice the one above me is from long beach, he knows what hes talking about. Sorry

Cali smog is really easy to understand, if your just changing the muffler. Fail.

ANY exhaust mods are illegal.

but if your redoing piping and stuff and only getting smogged at a test only station they wont care about your muffler. Only police will for noise violation (i believe is 93.1 db's) dont quote me on that. But if your redoing the piping from headers/removal of cat and you go to a big smog shop you will fail. A muffler shouldnt change your smog levels at all, but make sure you have your igniton componants up to date and running a fuild called "Guarentted to pass" helped me pass with my GEN II JDM 3sgte. It burns excess carbon off your cylinder walls.

if you need any other help, shoot me an AIM at Uriiko001. Hope this helped some.

Cali Smog....
I just passed smog with my muffler no problem. I did have to get a new stock intake from a Corolla which fit perfectly. The problem was my intake was not regestered (and i tossed the old one like a dumb ass ) with the state and they would not even perform the smog after inspection. When i do turbo the 7afe and have to get it smoged in an other two years im doubting it will pass the inspection. How do other after marked turboed cars get away with this in cali? Do they just know the right person or are they putting there cars back to stock when getting smoged?

i believe that just the muffler is okay as long as you have a silencer on(correct me if i'm wrong)...for the catalyctic conveter pretty much as long as you have one it should still pass emission...i have a hi flo cat with custum 2.25 piping and dual mufflers and pass smog no problem...

I passed, I though I would not but I did, pretty closely, the guy doing it was like OMG that car is sick and could barily contain himself when running it on the rollers, even though my car is nothing special he was thrilled mabye padded the results but who knows.
