How could you carry a baby for 9 months just to put it in a bag and toss it over a fence and leave? We have a law here in Washington where u can leave it at a hospital or fire station within 3days of birth with no questions asked. Thank god someone found this baby

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MARYSVILLE, Wash. – A 17-year-old girl, in the U.S. on a visa, stands accused of dumping her newborn baby near a retention pond in Marysville, leaving him for dead.

The baby boy with the umbilical cord still attached was found in a black plastic garbage bag Saturday night, apparently after being tossed over a fence, police said. The newborn was covered in blood and appeared to be no more than a few hours old.

The baby suffered a mild case of hypothermia and was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center; at last report, the infant was doing OK.

A 17-year-old Hispanic girl, who lives across the cul-de-sac from the pond in a new development on the east side of town, was arrested Monday morning. She appeared in court on charges of child abandonment in the second degree, a class c felony. The girl has lived in the U.S. with her sister and brother in law for only three months; if convicted, she could be deported back to her home country.

Police followed a trail of blood droplets to her home and believe she is the mother but don’t have medical confirmation, nor did she confess, police Commander Steve Winters said. Medics examined her at the police station, then took her to an undisclosed hospital for treatment early Sunday, he added.

KING

The baby was found about 11 p.m. Saturday night after his crying was heard by two couples who live next to the pond, Frank and Belinda Wright, who is nine months pregnant, and Mike and Brenda Wentland.

The baby was found about 11 p.m. Saturday night after his crying was heard by two couples who live next to the pond, Frank and Belinda Wright, who is nine months pregnant, and Mike and Brenda Wentland.

“I just knew it was a brand new baby cry,” said Belinda Wright.

“Belinda was pointing, saying it was a baby,” Mike Wentland said. “There was something in her voice that made me run and get my shoes, get my flashlight.”

The two men went to the chain-link fence.

“At first I thought it was an animal, because I’ve heard raccoons scream like that, but then we jumped the fence and saw that it was a baby,” Wentland said.

He said he climbed the fence and found the boy in a black garbage bag at the bottom of a slope with a swath of weeds slightly matted between the fence and the baby. In the glow of a flashlight, he saw “this little pale baby hand going like this, waving come get me to me…It was crying,” he said.

“It looked like they tossed it over the fence and it rolled down the hill,” Wentland said. “It’s lucky the baby landed on its back rather than its face” after coming to a stop.

Without the neighbors’ quick action, Winters said, “that child might very well have not made it through the evening.”

A 2002 state law allows a mother to abandon a baby anonymously without criminal prosecution, as long as the baby is less than three days old and is left safely with a hospital or fire station worker. Police say they expected to forward their case to the prosecutor’s office soon.

i think itd be really cool if the family that found the baby could/would adopt the baby

I think it should be attempted murder not child abandonment

she must not have had the baby at a hospital if the umbilical cord was still on it.. nevermind i am dumb

but letting a 17 year old girl go home 3 hours after giving birth? that seems odd..

hopefully she'll be deported. we don't need any more abandoned children here in the united states. she obviously wouldn't have been a very good mother, at least now this kid has a chance at a better life, somewhere else.

it's so sad... i don't know what kind of a world we live in where people are still acting like primates.

i've done volunteer work with children, plenty of times. you think this is heart wrenching, you should see what happens when these ****ty parents actually decide to keep the kids. i'm a pretty tough guy, but some of these kids' stories just reduce you to tears.

no one in there right mind would do that, so crule, has to be in some serious depression, probably extreemly bi-poler along with other issues.

thats horrible though if you did not want it that bad should have had an abortion.

- also, thats totaly attempted murder, chile abuse/abandonment

And most people don't realize there are tons of people out there willing to adopt and just waiting for the chace. My gf's parents waited 9 years for a baby to adopt (my gf) and they were so thrilled when they heard they were going to get to.

Sigh. It makes me sad. The girl who did it must be in a pretty rough spot in life to have to resort to something like that.

Just because she's hispanic doesn't mean she's not a legal citizen. It could have been any girl, white, black, hispanic, or asian. Check your prejudices at the door. mad.gif

I think he got that from another article on the internet which mentioned she was on a green card, which means she is not a citizen I think.

I'll check my prejudice at the door, but I'm keeping my brain with me. Read the article.

I wouldn't want someone like that to be a citizen of the US, especially after abandoning a child, I could care less where they're from or what ethnicity they are. If they could be this cold & callous with a human life, who knows what else they're capable of.

This isnt something new tho. This happens alot. Women get pregnant and hide it from their family (not sure if she hid it from the family) then have the baby and drop it off somewhere or do something like this girl did.

Personally if you cant accept responsibilty for your actions then you shouldnt be having sex.

Akimbo, read the news story better. Sinner wasnt referring to her race at all:

This just goes to show how much we need to make information like these hospital programs more widely known. I just found out that most states in the US have this policy, but I'm still trying to find out if the hospital on my island has it.

I really think that if a law like this is effective, then it should be taught along with sex ed. AND...because these things usually occur in low-income families (where the mothers cannot afford to keep the child)...efforts should be made to notify residents of lower-class neighborhoods that these laws do exist, and that there are clinics where you can get free/cheap birth control...

...and that you can prevent yourself from walking around pregnant for 9 months...at least spare yourself that trouble, if not the horror of leaving a newborn for dead in a garbage bag.
