http://www.throttlehorseracing.com/fourwhl...go_(1-8-05).jpg

A rough sketch of the track I will be running. Finally a couple of my friends are going! EK Civic, RSX, Sunfire, and of course.. the usual me (celica), my brother -MRS, and Corolla

The Corolla, Sunfire, and Civic will all be in the same class (STS)
Me.. as usual.. the same class as them Cooper S kindasad.gif

Im building a in car camera mount right now. Hopefully I will have an in car and another video from the outside.

Its going to really hot. And theres thought of running nitrogen in my tires (they stay more constant with pressure) I just have to see till then laugh.gif

I deff like that corse, I'm not a huge fan of long slolums I perfer some straights mixed in, but most the corses I race are covered in slolums.

the coopers S's usualy do pretty good, gana be tought comp, same with miatas though. Good Luck! I would not worry to much about the civics or sunfires.

my last race had me up against an evo 8, evo 9, 350z, maxima, bmw 325 (i think 325,) civic si, and some acura. I did not do so good but what was cool was the diff between 3rd and 8th place was just under 1 sec, there were 12 cars in my group. I got 8th frown.gif(i'll scan my corse map if you wana see it.)

you do much better than me.. in this event theres about 12 Cooper S all in my class..

The sunfire is going to be cake.. o.O the civic not sure.. its their first event.. and this is my third, but first time in this area.

Only thing im worried is the scribble on the left.. its a big puddle about 5x5x3.. also known as Giligans Island

lol nice water makes if fun and evens up the comp, just coast though it you'll be fine, I would not even avoid it, if its in you path just skip on though, but thats me (probably better of going around if your not sure)

the civics are questionable, usualy there not the best, like resonably fixed up motors but cheapo susp. but there are a few, like my last race, out of no were that si took first, it was a total sleeper, was beat and sounded like rice but it deff had something that kept it in control.

the 'easiest' way would probably be just use Windows Movie Maker. you could probably get the video down into the 10 meg range. Or if you can get your hands on Dr.Divx you could do it like that. Anywho, with WMM, just click import file, and then click save to computer and pick the settin that fits you best (gotta play with it 2 see how small the file size will be)

cool stuff...

heres a vid of my MR2 autox'n. this event was at Waterford Hills (WHRRI), this was my worst event of the season as i finished 4th in class and 47th/200 overall. I still hold the ES class lead, but its much slimmed down now.

The video is my friend/codriver Alex driving, hes currently 3rd in the standings, and finished 2nd at this particular event.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsz46XcNRug

I havent had a chance to upload my runs yet. Note this is the fastest course we ran this year, lots of 3rd gear time and rev limiter bouncing.

the mount is the chasecam extension mount, the camera is a Canon SD630 running at 30FPS... obviously any quality the video had was killed by the youtube compression.

when you understeer that bad turn the wheel LESS, not more and let off the gas, its a really hard thing to do, but your car will actually turn more with less input.

turn less with no gas then? Also my friend who autox his 01 rolla said do all your braking before a turn.. does that go together?

yes, it all deals with the same concept.

the short version:
your tires have a finite ammount of grip they can deliver (100% of available grip)

when you start asking them to do things (brake, turn, accelerate) they use a percentage of that available grip. in real basic novice concept you want to focus all 100% of the available grip on single tasks at a given time... you hit the braking zone... you want to use 100% of the tires to get you to slow down... you get into the turn, and you want to use 100% of the available grip to turn the vehicle.

when you get too deep and are using 80% of the available grip to get the car to slow down, THEN you try to use say 50% of the grip to get the car to turn... you are now at 130% available tire grip. voila! massive understeer. the concept of less steering + less throttle/brake input = more turning relies on the fact that you are now using less a percentage to turn, so as you unwind the wheel, the tire will start to get back closer to 100% and start to grip and make you actually turn again.

again this is a very basic/novice concept but works WONDERS for getting used to understeer/oversteer and braking... the other major contributor to this is slip angle, which is a little more advanced of a concept but deals with the same principals.

when you find yourself overshooting a turn, get the wheel back fairly straight and lessin the steering, once you feel grip return, back off the brake and turn in more, next time in that turn get the braking done sooner or do more of it.

^ dang you get some good tracks. only advice i can say about it is take the corners wide at first then cut in sharp to line up the next obstical, and yeah break before the turn then coast and hit the gas pulling out of it, the fwd has an advantage because you can pull hard out of a turn and keep it in control, were rwd has a much harder time not pulling to hard and swinging the back end around a bit.

good thing to get in your frame for taking vids: hands and head, hands to show your steering input (too much, too jerky, too slow/fast etc..) and head to see where you're looking, look ahead, look WAAAAY ahead.

Yea.. hopefully I get that done lol.. Ill probably use the mini dv for the upcoming event.

What tire pressure are you guys running? with 205/50s I used 46font 36rear.. it felt like it was sticking and the tires were folding too badly, just right. I might run more in the rear like 46/39

on your bigger profile tires I would say 46 is high but should keep the sidewalls strong, 39 is a little low, try 45 all the way around, I run at like 42ish, but dont make it exact, just keep it a little over 40 on my tires. (toyo proxies 215/40)

and yeah, always be looking atleast 2 moves ahead, be planning your moves in as much advance as you can so you can better set your position and angle for them when you get there.

not necessarily 2 cams... if your camera is attached to the passanger seat (i assume by the view it is), push the seat back as far as possible and as high as possible, aim it at the windscreen with a buddy in the driverseat and fine tune it so you can see the back of his head and his hands. you should still be able to see a good amount of the track, keep it zoomed out all the way.

looks like a fun course, i love it when designers are obsessed with slaloms and constant radius/sweeping turns smile.gif

EDIT: ALSO REMEMBER!!! All my advice is speculative. take it all with a grain of salt. i run an ES MR2 with race rubber, my eyes are trained to read a course with my car in mind, your car WILL behave slightly differently so you may want to run a modified line off mine. ALSO REMEMBER my advice is based on an assumption of scale and distances, if in doubt, error on being smooth and balanced, modify your line each run as you figure out what sections run differently than the course map or the course walk. ALSO NOTE track conditions, error away from large and/or fresh oil spots and large puddles (esp. on race tires and around high grip maneuvers) that stuff gets on your tires and takes a little while to come off, if you go galloping through oil and water you will loose tiregrip for more than the time you are in/on the element.

haha yea. Im thinking of getting the mount that one of the guy has.. it attaches to any bar so its good for me. The whole course was tweaked. Like the slaloms were really wide (forgot the name they told me..) and the smooth turns became sharp. Also driving with a huge blister isnt good haha. I was faster tho.. its the reverse of my first autcross which I got 90 on.. on this one I got 77

I did do what you said about understeer. Helped alot especially when im close to knocking down a wall of cones

nice! that MRS looks real nice, does it run CS?

ya im in the same boat as you right now, Ive been living off of low speed high cornering events since i got into autocross. only over the past few events have things really sped up and my inexperience is showing (though i did have last years ESP national champ beat after the 1st day of the cen-div event. (less a clipped cone). I expect the same to continue next event as I will be autocrossing at Grattan Raceway on labor day, very fast with lots of elevation changes.

heres what my schedule has been for this year, i expect (work schedule pending) next year will be more intense, including more cen-div and national events as well as the national championships in topeka... id like to go to the pro runoffs as well but i donno... i need to work a lot on the mental portion as pro events are much more intense.

06 Schedule:
April 1st - Phase 1 Evolution driving school - Cincinnati OH
April 2nd - Phase 2 Evolution driving school - Cincinnati OH
April 22nd - Kettering University Spring AutoX #1 - Birch Run MI
May 7th - Detroit Region SCCA Season Opener - Clarkston MI
May 14th - Kettering University Spring AutoX #2 - Birch Run MI
May 29th - Detroit Region SCCA Memorial Day - Clarkston MI
June 3rd - SCCA Pro-Solo National Series Event #5 Day 1 - Peru IN
June 4th - SCCA Pro-Solo National Series Event #5 Day 2 - Peru IN
June 25th - Detroit Region SCCA Spring Fling - Ypsilanti MI

so racing 14 weekends out of the summer with taking all of august off, there were a few events i would have liked to go to (peru Cen-Div championships, DRSCCA Oscoda Prostyle, MVSCC Heat of the Night night AutoX) but schedule bit me bad in august... oh well, gave me time to fix the car.

This year i only raced the closest pro-national (got my ass kicked too) but that was more i had an extremely bad weekend rather than me not having the ability to compete with them. next year i expect to do a little more traveling... i want to go back to peru IN for the pro and the national series event, as well as D.C. and maybe tag along to arkansas... we'll see what happens. id highly recommend doing pro and/or national series events (atleast the one closest to you) its a blast and you get to see how big autox really is. Id also HIGHLY recommend going to an evolution school, i will be going back for sure early next season, dunno if i will redo phase 1, 2 or both... or do a phase 3.

oh he runs street prepared? how competitive is he? what kind of tires does he use? do you guys run your local series for points or just go when you can?

boosted, based on your experiances, do you believe that a 6th gen (with the proper suspension modifications mind you) can compete and hold its own during regional or national events? Or against cars like miatas or S2K's. Or is it mainly just the person behind the wheel?

heres my take:

first on stock category:
celicas as far back as 4th gens up to 7th gen GTS (7th gen GTs are in H-Stock... dont ask me why it is this way) are all in G-stock. nationally, nothing in GS has a fighting chance against the Mini Cooper S. H-stock is the same way with the standard Mini Cooper. On the local/regional side, I think given the proper stock class treatment it just depends on the driver and the local competitors, you would be at a distinct disadvantage but given enough time to develop as a driver in the car they can atleast be competitive... unless you are driving against a lot of minis with decent drivers. I think the right thing to do here is try to get the celicas (less the 7th gen GTS) moved to HS.

modified classes
Back in 01 and 02 John (evilspeed) Dolecek proved the 6th gen to be competitive nationally in STS class, winning and placing in a number of national pro and divisional events, however the class has really evolved since 02 and repeating such a feat would be extremely difficult though i will restrict myself from saying impossible. I think if the celica were to have a fighting chance in a class nationally this would be it, but for lack of a lesser cliche you better be damn good if you expect to take that knife to a gun fight.

Hmmm, that is weird. Why would a 140 power 7th gen GT be in H-stock, but a 135 (roughly) 6th gen GT be in G -stock? also, are 6th gen ST's in G? Casue thats just weird. Sorry for being noOb but this whole thread has me intriged, but im not very familier with these classes. Like what order do they go in and what is STS? Thanks boosted.

yes.. it doesnt matter if your GT or ST 6g your in GStock either ways..

I believe the only celica with a different class is the alltrac.

umm.. my brother is prepared cause when he bought the car off the dealer (one he works in) it came with all sorts of TRD goodies. Right now he has some bridgestones up front an yokohoma in the rear. we race for fun and points in the ODR events. (right now hes 6th place in novice with 2 races) im 32 with 1 race lol

Right now were building (planning) on our double duty autox car.. a 81 Starlet.. which were hoping to just be classed at SM

y its that way? the only guess i can venture is because a group of 7th gen GT owners were able to present a case to the classification committee that got their car dropped to H-stock, id imagine non-7th GTS owners would have a good case to have that done as well. classifications as well as class index multipliers and altered and adjusted every year depending on national level competition. If vehicles dont come out to national competitions, they usually dont get paid attention to for reclassification. Even the Alltracs are G-stock.

cool starlet should be fun

yea it has been a while since i was on here regularly. Ive been very busy with school now that i am into my senior year and starting my thesis project. Over school term i also am president of the Kettering University Firebirds Club so i am in charge of a bunch of events (autocrosses, drag days, karting). I obviously have been busy racing SCCA, and I also have been karting frequently (this thursday is industry night at kart2kart so we run the course backwards, should be fun). I also am working full time for a paint process engineering firm... granted its not even close to what i want to be doing, but i only have 3 more terms left of it before i graduate and i wont stay on here after that. i browse the site periodically but havent really had much time to post or really any threads that have been worth putting my $0.02 in on, not much of a celica expert these days haha

wow next week marks the 4th year as a member here (atleast since the site was reset... i might be one of the few members here who remember that lol)

yea F125s are pretty wicked a few of the guys that run them in detroit region have a good shot at the national championship this year.... not always FTD on PAX though, there are quite a few REALLY good drivers here, few national champs.

and that really helps too, IMO you can only improve as much as your competition will allow you... you will get too comfortable if the competition is easy.

yea the kart grabs FTD for Raw mostly.. our PAX winner is usually Miata or MRS. Theres a couple veterans here.. not sure if theyre national champs tho. A bud of mine raced his 89 Tercel back then.. I mean back then early 90s at the Autox I think he was in the Yokohoma SCCA challenge or something like that. He still has the car, disassembled tho. Hes planning on throwing it in for Grassroots

Actually, all the 7th gens are G stock. I autoX against one at the DC events. The GTS used to be D stock and got moved this last year. All of the 6th gens were under consideration to be moved last year but that didn't happen. The ST used to be *the* car to have. It even got bumped up from H to G stock. That was before the new Mini came on the scene. I sent in a proposal to have them moved at the end of this season but it probably won't happen. I asked one of the SEB members about it and was told that the car is too old and they don't want to risk the chance of making an out of production car the dominant car in a class.

What would be interesting would be to build an FSP 6th gen GT. If I could find a no-frills (no sun-roof, cloth seats, manual windows, etc) '94 GT nearby I might looking into doing that. For now I will just continue to get beaten every other week. It doesn't help that I'm running against drivers mentioned in Sports Car as contenders at nationals. However, the car for GS may no longer be the Mini S. The Sentra SE-R was moved last year and its my pick for nationals this year. Unfortunately I can't make nationals this year but I will try to go next year. Boosted, let me know if you plan on coming to any DC events next year.

ya, i have heard that the SE-R can give the cooper-S a run for its money however never seeing one run (atleast w/ a competitive driver) in person leaves me still skeptical.

the DC pro is on my wish list to attend next year for sure, as far as national tour i'll likely attend peru but not sure of what else... maybe dc

Eric Kriemelmeyer was 3.5 seconds faster than me in his SE-R this weekend on a 40-45 second course. I got him to drive my car for a couple of fun runs and he was still 1.7 seconds faster so the car is still capable. He said the handling and turn in was great. It's just lacking in the power department. I may co-drive his car at one of the events after nationals just to see the difference.

I'll be going to at least one pro next year (I won a free entry at this year's DC pro for the first 0.500 reaction time). I will try to get another one or two in as well and am planning on going to nationals. Not sure if I will still be driving the Celica or not. I'll probably keep it for local events and try to co-drive someone else's car for remote events.

ya, codriving is the way to go, saves so much money. my buddy and i codrive my ES MR2, we will be doing it again next year then he plans to build a 240Z for BSP the following year. We hope to prove that car is competitive in the class or disprove it and get it moved to a different SP class.

this weekend will be my first event in a month, we are going to Grattan raceway for a western michigan region event, then i only have 2 more events left this season in detroit region and 2 or 3 events at my university.

wow i am so exhausted. what a long day out at grattan but that track is pretty wicked. I finished 2nd of 9 in class, my codriver alex was third. im not sure what i will end up at in PAX but i dont expect to be very high because there was a long drag section across the finish line (4th gear ~90 MPH across the lights) so PAX gets all skewed when courses are run like that. a little E-Stock MR2 just doesnt have the power to put up a PAX fight.

shower now... maybe vids on youtube a little later... but likely tomorrow

about 70% of the course was completed in 3rd gear... you run second gear out about midway through the first right hander and continue 3rd through the esses and over the crest, around the bowl (that was really cool running through the banking, which is a lot more severe than the video leads you to believe) and up over the crest into the right hander and down through the 5 cone slalom. I noticed I hit this section really well and staying early however i probably could have sped up the pace just a little bit through here. after the slalom is the only downshift point, which is the braking zone for the nasty off camber right hander over the crest... people go off course here often because if you are not turning before cresting the hill you wont have enough weight on the tires to get it to turn in and you are SOL. from the bottom of that hairpin is another flat out shift to 3rd through the 3 cone slalom and up the hill. If you have the stomach for it you SHOULD be WOT from the slalom to the finishline, i chickened out and lifted to 3/4 throttle in the blind section just before cresting the hill. once over the hill you are still WOT through the dicey lane change and out on the streight... into 4th gear and across the line.

ACU-4 Event at Sep 17. Driving School Oct. 21 w00t! Time to be pwnd in my own car by a total stranger

Would the Mini drivers have the same "feel" in my car? I dont think we have an instructor that drives a huge underpowered car

umm.... the experience will not likely be the same... but a good driver is a good driver and within the first few sections they can figure out what a car can and cannot do. plus at driving schools instructors typically will not drive someone else's car over 70-75% of their ability... the difference for them may be 25-30% of their potential.... but to you it will be like 150% of what you thought the car could do.

what type of school is it? evolution?

I was at the A-section kettering firebirds event today.

details:
1. forcast showed thundershowers all day, it ended up basically misting the entire time so it was constantly damp with a few random puddles (or lakes) from the T-showers the night before.
2. i drove my buddy's STX WRX most of the day today as well as my mr2 on ****ty old AS04 hoosiers (basically dry rotted... imagine playing football or soccer at 7:30AM with dew all over the field in a pair of adidas sambas)
3. I need a new car... holy hell STX prepped WRXs are soooo fun to drive... even if his isnt quite dialed in enough yet.
4. I ended up 2nd fastest Raw... which is basically second fastest any way you look at it. i was slightly slower in the WRX than i was in my car... about 3 tenths, the owner of the WRX beat me in our friends super-prepped STS 2.5RS. the difference is the 2.5RS can turn, the wrx not so much
5. highlights of cars that brad and i beat RAW time were: 400 HP 1st gen DSM (he was third fastest and was running ****ty tires as well), highspeed kart (one of the laying down ones, it was geared all wrong for the event), the entire A-section Formula SAE team (lmfao... they suck at driving), and a turbo civic hatchback that looked pretty sorted for SM class.

no video or pictures, basically just a knock around event, i felt i needed to run a different vehicle than my own to get out of some bad habits i was getting into.
