For those who have not been reading.

The V6 swap has been done

This project started in october 2005 when I finaly narrowed down what I wanted for the Celica.

My options were either the famous relatively easy 3rd gen 3SGTE swap or the blind path of the V6.

Before I begin, I owe a big thanks to all the MR2OC guys that helped me out. I was maybe alone in the garage but I had their support at all time. Big thanks to Adrian (aka: SbCelica on MR2OC). He pioneered the FIRST V6 Celica, a 5th gen celica with a 1MZFE. He was who inspired me to start the project. I followed in his foot steps.

Research took from october to april and even continued on as I made my progress. I spent a good two months gathering parts and getting everything ready for the big swap. Often reading myself to sleeping with a pile of toyota wiring diagrams in my bed.

Here's how I made it happen

My setup:

04 Sienna 3MZFE
-150amp Alternator
-Solara power steering (sienna pump doesn't fit)
-Toyota Matrix K&N intake (thats right, a Matrix intake fits)
-Fidanza 1MZFE Flywheel
-3SGTE clutch

01 Solara E153 Transmission
-Alltrac rear and driver side mount, GT front mount
-GT-FOUR shifter cables
-MR2 turbo (non LSD) inner axles
-Solara axle carrier
-ST185 outter axles (with abs cause I have it)
-ST185 speed sensor

I don't know where to start, to me it's all self explainatory. Without going into deep details, heres a few pointers.

The engine fits very well inside the engine bay, no clearance issue at all. It's narrower than the 5SFE and less in a slant so the rear is easily accessed. It fits better than a 5SFE basicly.

The hood is a minor issue, it closes just fine but it's so close it's scary. The whole front bank (head) touches the insulation of the hood. The cure is a GT-four hood and we all know it needs a GT-four bumper aswell. I have that up on the upgrade list. smile.gif

Wiring isn't hard ! You all get that out of your head
It's very time consuming tho, preparation was the key. On paper it took me months to prepare it bit per bit but it took me about 10 hours to physicaly do it. Keep in mind that this is for the most electronicly advanced V6 swap (next to the still unexploited 2GRFE). The ECU controls the automatic transmission so it needs to be fooled into thinking there is one by putting resistors where it seeks the transmission coils. I haven't got around to perfecting that.

This engine uses a returnless fuel system, basicly a ordinary fuel pump with the regulator inside the tank. I adapted this system by swaping out my 5SFE pump for a sienna pump (bolt on, plug and play), hacked off a section off the steel return line next to the pump, strapped on the regulator and Tee-d the main line to the return line on top of the fuel pump cap.

Gas pedal, no longer. It's now a accelerator position sensor. AKA drive by wire. no more throttle cable, no more cruize control servo and computer. it's fully electronicly controlled by the ECU now.

Immobilizer - I have two keys now, one for my ignition and one with a chip in it to satisfy my immobilizer so it'll let me start my engine. I had to get the coil amplifer (basicly the ring around the ignition) and the immobilizer computer ("immobilizer" is an annoying word to type)

Mounts, those are a piece of cake. 3 mounts are on the transmission, I swapped out for a E153 Solara V6 transmission. More on that later. I used alltrac rear and driver side mounts. The rear had to have a spacer because the cross member had a slant in it and the mount would have sat on an angle. The driver side had to be grinded down a bit to fit because it was too large to fit in the frame bracket. The front is my old GT stock.
The passenger side one had to be custom made, I simply took out the mounting bracket and made one that fit for the V6. Personaly I don't like this but it works and doesn't seem to cause any problems. I will be making a whole new mount for it using a spare driver side mount.

The stock strut bar fits but interferes with the engine rocking back and forth so I took it out and will be making a custom strut bar. I didn't notice any change in handling.

Transmission, as I said before, I am using a 01 Solara E-153. I had to get a speed sensor, shifter cable mounting bracket and levers (thank you bigal wink.gif). I was under the impression that the alltrac cables would fit but they do not fit and are not even close to fitting. So I bought some GT-four cables, they snap into place and work like a charm.

Axles, I used non-lsd mr2 turbo inner axles (because I don't have LSD) ST185 outer ABS axles (because I have ABS) and a Solara V6 axle carrier. Fit right into place but I still have to get a spacer for the passenger side axle. it works tho

Exhaust - the nightmare
Nothing fit, not the front nor the rear headers fit. I did a simple cut, flange, route job to my stock exhaust for the moment. At this time I ran out of funds and could not afford a full exhaust. I will be making custom headers for this baby, 2.5" front to back, magnaflow muffler.

Radiator hoses are a mess, the outlet and inlet are at opposite side of the radiator. The overflow tank needs to be Tee'd because I now have two fill caps. One on the engine and one on the rad.

EVAP system, I got a EVAP canister from an Echo and stuck it on the opposite side of the muffler at the rear. Drilled a hole in the fuel tank, just in front of the fuel pump cap and stuck a check fill valve. This isn't necessary unless you want to get rid of the check engine light (and codes). Or live in a place that have strict emission guidelines. anyone from cali?

and more but I can't think of anything else right now.

To this day, even if it runs, I don't concider it complete. I have some bugs to work out and some minor refinements. Towards the end, I was broke and I needed to rush things because I was starting a new job and needed a car so I did the bare minimum. Now I'm too busy working and paying off debts, lol but I'm not giving up. Winter is coming, things will settle and I will perfect it.

I am hoping that the V6 swap becomes mainstream. It's not that hard to do and can be done for less than a 3SGTE. Please don't argue this before researching the prices.

My swap was a full drivetrain swap, it would have been much simpler if I would have stuck with the GT tranny and I would have cost much much less. But the Solara tranny is far better than the GT tranny and is optimal for this engine.... at a price.

There is also the 1MZFE which is easier than the 3MZ, less wiring, less gizmos (no drive by wire, no immobilizer, fewer o2 sensors, etc... just simpler)

Well thats all I want to say for now, I have to take a break from typing so much. Too many PMs to reply too on top of this.

Hope you found it interesting biggrin.gif

I must add, the information above is for a 3MZFE
Mounting is the same for all other V6's but alot of the rest is because of the technology of the 3MZFE

Good work, glad to hear its working for you!

I will definately hit you up with questions if I decide to go the V6 route. The 2GR-FE is the route I would be taking though!

the 2GRFE is a crazy engine. Basictly its Toyotas answer to the overly used VQ35DE.. which seems to be in every Nissan

When swapping the 2GRFE make sure its enuff power. F/I on those are not recomended. Keeping the original equipment will ensure best result. The engine is built and not much room for improvement.

A more casual setup would be the 1MZFE. if more power is needed TRD supercharger

You had better get to work. I have ideas on a few things for this including making it a rear wheel drive with posi. I already have the source engine if I get to do my V8 swap in my truck the celica will be next starting from a GT that I found.

Thanks everyone smile.gif

It was the biggest project I've ever done in my entire life, I'm very proud of it. It was a long ruff road, lots of cuts, bruizes, blood, stress, money, money, debts, school, girlfriend getting mad at me.

Pictures will come shortly, I only got it on the road a couple weeks ago. As for vids, i'm planning on intergrating a webcam to work with my carPC, so it might be a while. This will all get done when I take it off the road for the winter, probly sooner than winter because I want to get alot of stuff done while it's still somewhat warm. Also I need to gather funds to upgrade my exhaust and get some better parts (new hoses, cv boots, lines, etc...)

All this isn't official, it's just a taste. I will work out the bugs, make replica custom parts needed for the swap and make a highly detailed information guide. My goal is to push the idea of a V6 swap in a celica. I want it to become mainstream as much as the 3SGTE.

also, here is my june picts. I don't have any recent picts unfortunately. (don't own a digicam)

That is a question with no answer. My swap (my configuration) cost about $4k cnd in parts, it will go from there as I add more stuff to it. A few hundred dollars were spent where I didn't need it, simply as trial and error.
The reason why there is no exact cost for the swap is simply because there are so many options and so many price variation in parts from junk yard to junk yard. Getting a full motor with all accesories + ECU for one price will cut the total cost by alot. I had to source the power steering pump, alternator, ECU and a whole bunch of stuff seperately which racked up the cost.

Without a doubt, a V6 swap can be done under 2k, at the very basic of it. Start adding stuff like a E153 transmission, newer motor, upgrades and price will double and up.

Dr.Tweak asked me the exact same question, lol

So K-ESD, what are your impressions on the driving aspect?

two words... ----> wheel spin

I need bigger tires !!! (running 195/55/15's right now, good tires that came with rims for cheap)
It's very easy to break traction. I have to be very careful on the throttle.

but on a daily driving aspect, it's the best thing i've ever driven. The acceleration is so smooth, it feels like your getting pulled by a turbine. The Solara transmission shifts very very smoothly, like cutting through butter. It drives just like a brand new car, well after all I do have a motor with 16k kms and a trans with 60k kms. (try to get a 3SGTE localy with that many kms for $750 cnd tongue.gif )

Handling is not affected at all, not that I can notice. From carrying the two motors around, it feels like the 5SFE and the 3MZFE are about the same weight.

When I do gun it, after I get that wheel spin under control, it pulls like crazy (if I don't break loose again). I find myself shifting through gears very fast. The torque is just always there, in 5th gear I stomp on it and it MOVES up fast, no bogging like the 5SFE. It's an amazing engine, as good as in my dreams....maybe even better smile.gif

also, i get better gas mileage than my 5SFE when babied.

I have to add, I do have a bit of throttle lag, less than 1/4 second of it. It's not a big deal, a little bug I need to fix. It has something to do with the ECU not finding the auto slushbox that it's supose to run. (3MZ only problem)

What bracket did you use in the rear? I also had to space my st185 rear mount up.. I just used 2 washers. I also had to cut the st185 driver side mount too..

Decided to go back to the GT driver side mount... then realized that the mounting holes on the transmission bracket were just to far off and didn't want to screw with it anymore so I put the ST185 goodies back on.. heh.

But ya, just really want to know which rear mount bracket you used.. I ended up using the GT one with a slit bit of modification to it.. I couldn't get the st185 bracket to even look right..

I used the alltrac rear bracket. In my case it lined up and bolted down with no fuss.

So cool to hear this, K-ESD. Thanks for being a pioneer.

How about the legality of the swap? The engine would conform to US regs and also would be from a newwer car, so is this actually legal?

Thanks smile.gif

for legality, it's not something I worry about here in Canada wink.gif

for the states, i can't say for sure but it can very well be legal as far as emissions go, you just need to adapt all the emission systems of the year of the engine. It has been done many times in MR2s, it can be done in celicas.

$1600usd!!!!! thats a ridiculous price!!!!!!!!!! laugh.gif
wow, they are trying to catch a really big fish.

I got my 3MZFE for $750cnd ($660usd), it had 16k kms (10k miles), there are more like those almost everywhere, maybe not with that low milegage but still under 50k miles. That should give you an idea of what to pay for.

whatever you do, don't pay more than a 1000 for an engine. 1000+ is ALOT for a used V6 concidering the high supply of them. If you can get a fully dressed V6 w/ ECU, AC, PS pump, Alternator and some misc parts, then it's worth more.
Shop around, there are thousands of MZs and VZs sitting in junk yards.

about the vids, picts, sound clips, other entertaining material....

QUOTE(K-ESD @ Aug 29, 2006 - 7:49 PM)

Pictures will come shortly, I only got it on the road a couple weeks ago. As for vids, i'm planning on intergrating a webcam to work with my carPC, so it might be a while. This will all get done when I take it off the road for the winter, probly sooner than winter because I want to get alot of stuff done while it's still somewhat warm. Also I need to gather funds to upgrade my exhaust and get some better parts (new hoses, cv boots, lines, etc...)

All this isn't official, it's just a taste. I will work out the bugs, make replica custom parts needed for the swap and make a highly detailed information guide.

the 2GRFE is a crazy engine. Basictly its Toyotas answer to the overly used VQ35DE.. which seems to be in every Nissan

hey i like my vq.....frown.gif ....anyways awesome motor when boosted.

anyways congrats on the swap i love hearing the celica owners finding new ways to make them faster

i still miss my celi...but not the 5s

2GRFE is simply too costly at this point for most of us sadly. however I would like to see more information on the V6 Swap. How difficult was it to change the harness for example?

For the 3MZ you grab all the computers needed to get the engine running. Same thing is needed for the 2GR (32 Computers I believe)

Fact on the 3MZ ECUs:
the 3MZ ECU only needs the immobilizer computer w/ amplifier and the key with the right chip in it. Theres a procedure to make the ECU learn the immobilizer ECU when everything is hooked up. I will add it to the guide.
thats all, anything else are sensors, a whole wack load of them

Theory on the 2GR ECUs (based on wiring diagram analysis):
-power supply (power control ECU) needed
-Immobilizer ECU + ampli + key needed

the rest are doodades that don't relate to the starting and running of the engine... like
-multiplex communications
-Emissions related sensors
-Tranny solenoids
-Body ECU (part of the multiplex com.)
-Automatic A/C control
-Skid control/traction control

any of this information (theory) is not fact until proven

I would like to keep the information flow as clean as possible to prevent confusion. I am working on a guide based on my experience. With it, it will cover all critical information for 1MZ's and 3MZ's. The 2GR is very similar to the 3MZ in terms of opperation so a large portion of the 2GR is technicaly covered, however is still theory because it has never been done in the celica before.

Wiring wasn't dificult at all. I wish I could compare to the 3SGTE and other motors.

It's very straight forward, the fact I got a Sienna motor made it even easier. The harness on the sienna is just one bundle as opposed to the 5SFE where it's tied into the fuse box on the right, goes thru the engine and into the firewall to connect to the ECU inside. The Sienna wiring harness is just engine thru firewall to ECU, thats it. 3 ECU plugs and 4 joining plugs. The diagrams were very easy to follow but needs to be studied inside out. One thing tho, the exact year/model diagram is needed, no exceptions... unless you enjoy pulling your hair.

I didn't mess around, I made my own power distribution system (EFI circuit) in conjuction to the EFI circuit of the 5SFE. This way I'm 100% sure that the ignition sequence behaves exactly like it did in the Sienna. I made the wiring in a way that the engine can be unbolted, detached and easily unpluged in the case where I would need to remove it.

and the update

the celica is back in the garage for final refinements and working out bugs.
plus:
-2.5" exhaust, header back
-custom strut bar
-possible custom headers, if time permits
-lowering springs (if i can find some soon enough)

Other things that will be done is upgrades to the carPC
-add in the intergrated OBD2 code reader
-dash cam
-engine mic for extra loud engine sound thru stereo (novelty)
-voice recongnition
-GPS

sorry, I won't be making any swaps for others. I don't have the free time to make a swap withing a short time frame.... and, at the moment, I don't feel like doing annother one.

However, I will provide as much information as possible, I really want to see others making V6 swaps.

edit:

Costs, a full swap, thats engine, transmission and all the related parts... including brand new fidanza flywheel and K&N filter, magnaflow exhaust. A little under 4k.
This is a "deluxe" swap, keeping the stock GT trans will slash cost in almost half, going for a older 1MZ with cut cost some more. I strongly believe it can be done at a minimum of $2k, maybe cheaper with some luck finding the right deals at a junk yard. (this applies to GT owners, ST owners will have to get a transmission and related parts)

fully dressed 1mzfe, 3sgte or v6 pressure plate, rad hoses, custom exhaust work for front, custom motor mount (pass side) + odds and ends like oil, coolant, misc parts, etc...

it's a good thing to have connections to have some welding done for the mount and exhaust

You are incredible man. WAY TO GO! You have all of my respect for doing this swap and actually sitting down to tell others how to do it as well! All of us that might be looking to do a swap owe you a HUGE Thanks! biggrin.gif Keep up the good work man! (My dad has an 04 Sienna so i have a feel of what that motor will do tongue.gif ) do you have any idea on how much torque you are producing?

Thanks everyone biggrin.gif

I have still no numbers of anything this engine produces except i'm sure it's well over 200wHP 200wtrq. Toyota rates this engine at 230HP 242trq. My only indication of its power is the wheels spin like if they were on gravel.... but they are on pave. kindasad.gif That can be good thing I supose

This reminds me of this...

The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Jean Girard: My name is Jean Girard and I am a racing-car driver just like you except I am from Formula Un. I am the greatest one in the whole world. I have been following your career with great interest, Monsieur Bobby.
Ricky Bobby: I can't understand a word you've said the whole time.
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Did you eat some peanut butter or something?
Ricky Bobby: Yeah, you sound like a dog with peanut butter on the roof of your mouth
Jean Girard: I think what you are hearing is my accent. I am French.
Ricky Bobby: You say you're French?
Jean Girard: Oui.
[sounds like 'We']
Ricky Bobby: We? No, we are not French. We're American, because you're in America, okay? Greatest country on the planet
Jean Girard: Well, what have you given the world apart from George Bush, Cheerios, and the ThighMaster?
Ricky Bobby: Chinese food?
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Chinese food.
Jean Girard: That's from China.
Ricky Bobby: Pizza.
Jean Girard: Italy.
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Chimichanga.
Jean Girard: Mexico.
Ricky Bobby: Really, smarty-pants? What did French land give us?
Jean Girard: We invented democracy, existentialism, and the bj
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Those are three pretty good things.
Ricky Bobby: Hey.
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Well that last one's pretty cool.

update: Rayme HID/Projector retrofit done, parked for the winter, no dyno this year sorry, I have been very busy working.

coming during winter: adding camry V6 torque damper to motor mounts, aeromotive FPR, tein springs, EHPS retrofit, new rims/tires.

this thread is really old and should rest in the archives, I will start a new one when I have some major updates.

how is the aftermarket support fpr the 3mzfe? i couldnt find any performance parts on ebay or manufactuer sites. Found plenty of replacements compononets. but no cams, turbos, chips, pistons hearders etc......i hope you wouldnt have to do all that custom. I know its mainly a family car engine, but their has to be some kind of performance parts out there. I know thier is probaly a trd supercharger for it, but im more of a turbo fan.
for know ill keep searching, any info posted will be apprecaited.

illneversellmyceli:
There are piston/rods cams, valves, springs, oil pumps, exhaust flanges, flywheels, clutches, the list goes on. Focus your attention to the MR2 V6 forums. 3/4 of these parts are interchanged from other motors. I doubt you will find 3MZFE named parts.
Just as an example, I'm using a Findanza solara V6 manual flywheel, K&N matrix intake.

A lot of stuff is universal, like standalone computers, turbos and bits, superchargers, exhaust parts. A wide variety of injectors also fit. The possibilities are endless, you just need to know exactly what you need and find it. Building a FI setup would be a piece of cake... (expensive cake)

Building up a V6 is not for the bolt on crowd. Much knowledge and skill is required. Sounds hard but keep in mind before this I never put a wrench to a motor before (aside from changing oil, spark plugs and an alternator). Everything I know now is 98% because of this swap. I did my homework, a lot of it. Anyone can do it, except maybe the dumbas-s that royally screwed up snapshot's V6.

joehernandez:
I'm a creative person and I'm easily influenced by crazy ideas as long as it has purpose. I'm very fussy when it comes to exotic looks, I find most body kits don't fit the car 99% of the time. I'm looking at putting the GT4 front end because I haven't seen anything that fits the 6gc better... yet. Perfect? It will never be perfect smile.gif

I haven't got around to making the strut bar yet. I had to focus my attention to other things.

Anyone done this while wiring in an EMS? I have an autronic that I've had for years that I want to put on this when I install mine. About to sell my nearly complete Gen III 3s that I don't have the money to buy the afermarket turbo and turbo components for. Then I'll start buying the engine and trans stuff after that. Anyone ran an EMS on this though?

I don't know though, I'm kindof on the fence about running it with the SM4. I know that it will absorb tons of time just making the harness for the car. I kinda want to get my car finished as soon as I can. If the autronic way is easier than the stock ecu+rewire then I'll choose that, if not then I'll just hold on to it and do it later. How extensive is the rewire?
