Nice DDs Fastbird and Forkee.

I guess Fastbirds DD is the earlier ecilpse unit and Forkee has the later version.

Does one version stay more flush with the dash console than the other? I see fastbird's isnt completly flush, but since forkee doesnt have a side'ish view I cant tell about the later version. I know its nit-picky, but I been thinking about getting one but it kills me that the screen may not fit flush with the dash console.

Is this just problem the mounting bracket?

im sure you can mount the dd's further in to be flush with the centre console, although with the headunit being motorised you may need it to be sticking out to avoid colliding with the walls. -R

Ours is a Kenwood Excelon DDX-8017. It wsa the top of the line Kenwood model for 2005. Christmas present for the wife last year. I wanted to spring for the Eclipse AVN-3500 ( I think that's it) but couldn't afford it at the time.

yes... just finished mine about 2 hours ago. will post pics when i get home from work.
drilled extra holes in the brackets so it would be flush more, otherwise the screen would've been sticking out about 2 inches!... also had to shave about 2mm off the centre dash panel on top and bottom so the motorized screen wouldn't rub. and wired up the FM band expander as well.
i used the metra amp integration harness for the premium stereo, and it works flawlessly.. all speakers work!
oh, plus i got the TV antennas hooked up, but sadly there's only one clear channel that it picks up.... frown.gif

i have the first edition DD eclipse made for the US market. if you look close you can see that the volume is on the passenger side. eclipse just rewrote the software in english and sent the unit here. so everythng is backwards.I have had mine sit flush but because the unit is slightly smaller than the hole it looked weird.

Here is mine. It is fairly flush, but does stick out a tad (under a cm), but I think it looks better than the ones that are completely flush (forkee) because the "flusher" looking ones tend to have a gap around the outside. Since mine protrudes a bit, I can attach a faceplate type border that attaches around the outter edge giving it a cleaner look IMO. I also like how the border goes right up underneath the vents and just above the CC. BTW I also had to drill out a bit of the trim above and below.

bringing this back from the dead-

are any of these equipped with navigation systems? That's what I’d really like to find.

BTW they look great. I hate that compartment under the head unit and I want to utilize that space for something better :-D

mine has navi, coulda shown ya at the past meet had i known you were interested, i didnt have to cut anything away on my console piece, also, if the gap is large enough, mount your screen to the left/right a bit and put inputs in the space, that way hooking up game consols for long trips is easy, i have my inputs in the glove box because i dont use them that often to want to look at them all the time

thats a good unit no doubt, but doesnt the nav read off a disc? from when i was playin with one it lagged big time and if you switch from nav to a movie, you need to change discs, the general gui looks amazing from the box, but again, the ipod features lag quite a bit, imo id get what i got because of its speed, then just dress up the gui to your liking with round buttons instead of squares.. etc

also i dont believe the nav updates too well and a good amount of back roads are not mapped, also the routing doesnt associate speed limits to different roads - aka a development road thats 2 mi long @ 25mph it views the same as 2mi on 65mph highway... little things, but they get annoying sometimes

for the price you cant beat it for a touch screen even though it doesnt have pulse touch, but great for a double din... and x2 for mounting it flush, test the motorized face a few times to ensure fitment, but dont leave it hangin out there by too much... spend the extra 10 mins when installing to make it look like it belongs there

I kinda wanna get a double din unit, if i can find a good place to mount my neo other than the lower din pocket.

r those touchscreen?

i thought there were US laws prohibiting video on the front seats? back is OK, since they're not driving. does it vary state by state? how about New England states?

my issue with DD is that it still doesn't do EVERYTHING a carputer does.... so do people go with carputers+touchscreen? for example, DD doesn't handle flac/ogg and many prop. formats that could be handled by carputers. plus, with carputers, u can replace the GPS/map program if you don't like it. DD's with hard installed GPS programs could suck... overtime. AND u can do surf off of public wifi (provided you clear the legal ramifications).

Yes, it is a touch screen.

It is only illegal to view movies and GPS maps while the car is on motion. Most dvd/navigation systems aren't able to allow the user to view these options when this happens, the system simply shuts off. I however, rewired mine so i can view mine while the car is in motion. For those of you which have an AVID-D3, i can tell u how. Or i may post a How-to later.

I used to like the idea of a car computer, but i changed my mind on it. This is my thoughts on that idea. IT would be nice to view many of the features that it offers, however many of those are also offered through these multimedia players as well. Another thing is. You can't have internet all the time when your on the road (like u said, u'll have to post up near a cafe or what not and park ur car there). One of the main reasons why i chose not to car computer, is because the screen would be to small to do anything spectacular with. Font would be small. The screen would only be 7" max, without any modifications. If i was gonna have a car computer, i would just go ahead and get myself a laptop w/ a bolt-on stand. Btw, i think its pretty cool that the AVIC-D3 has options to monitor car dynamics anyway !

Also with a carputer, its said to not be able to be damaged as easily as a regular hard drive, but constant bumping and shaking will cause any harddrive to go kaputz after a while. Trust me!

there are already hard disks made for such applications.

i haven't seen any DD's able to handle the same things a carputer can.

i have a car computer, with a laptop hard drive that is rated for 300 or so operating Gs and like 800 non operating Gs. its been in there for... 5 months and i havent had any problems. my screen isn't the best install butt it is 15 inches. cops stare but never say anything. i got my car inspected with it there too. im debating getting the 7" touch screen though and relocating the bigger screen somewhere..

Btw, i think its pretty cool that the AVIC-D3 has options to monitor car dynamics anyway !

By car dynamics, do you mean gas mileage and stuff like that? Does this work with OBDI or just OBDII?

Would love to have economy guage going!

That's sweet lemonade. What are the specs, brother? I've always wanted something like that, but I don't have a double DIN panel. If I could source one, I would rock that. biggrin.gif

i got it off ebay from a seller in japan who sells mainly used double-din stereos.. i saw this one and i immediately liked the factory appearance with the 4:3 screen ratio and the green lighting to match the stock interior. i can't find any specs online as it's not a popular stereo and it's pretty old. it doesn't have a cd/dvd slot, just cassette, but i have a dvd player hooked up to it located beneath the passenger seat. it also has a built-in tv tuner (came with 4 antennas which i mounted on the rear hatch cover), front and rear audio/video input, mic input (karaoke! lolz biggrin.gif), and gps (which doesn't work). it needed an FM band expander to get the radio working and i also added a bluetooth A2DP audio unit to play music and GPS directions wirelessly off my phone or laptop on long trips. this + the 8 speaker system is enough to keep me satisfied.
