I gotta question for UK owners. Recently my girl friend and I have been talking about what we are gonna do over the next few years. We are both graduating in 2009 and she wants to go for her masters degree. Shes thinking of going over to the UK for her masters, and if I come im gonna b going to school again over there too. Any ways, i was curious, i know there are alot of straight jap import cars to the UK. Whats involved with getting them registered? also do you know if some one who is gonna be a temporary resident can purchase/register a car? If i did i would be bringing it back to Canada with me when i come back. Im gonna be coming with a student work visa, and my girl friend has UK citizenship.

Any ways, any help would be great. Thanks
Bryan

Hi,

There's nothing at all to stop you buying a car as a temporary resident in the UK smile.gif

As for importing it's easy but there are plenty of places that will do it for you. You can pick up a GT4 for about £4-5K in the UK at the moment as well wink.gif

In the UK when you buy a car you are given something called a V5 - you use this to register yourself as the registered keeper of the vehicle with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority) and that's it - it's even free to register.

You will need to put the car through an MOT once a year this basically checks that it is road worthy and you must have at least 3rd party insurance on the car but this should be easy enough to arrange (Adrian Flux or Sky are worth a try if the car is modified/imported).

You may or may not need to take a driving test - I don't know off hand.

Basically all this means is that once you have permission to drive in the UK (whatever is involved in that) you can just pitch up at a car importers and buy a car. You then arrange insurance and collect it. Once this is done you send off the V5 and you are registered as being responsible for that car.

Any more questions - just ask.

Al

Thanks man, pretty much answered my questions. Im gonna b headin over there in 2009 or so. Also my friend owns an importing company and u work for him. So gettin a car imported would be pretty easy. Also, if you dont mind, how much say a Pug 206 (newer) or a newer Seat Leon costs?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/ Is your friend for a price guide on UK cars - You need to put in a postcode to search for cars for sale you can use TQ13 0HD which is for where I used to live.

Your friend may own an import company but I certainly don't work for him - I'm a computer programmer laugh.gif
