I'm wanting to put a shift light in my car, but I'm not exactly sure what to go for. Stock tach is great for me. In fact, I have a big preference for making things look as stock as possible. What I am thinking about is someone just hooking up a couple LEDs infront of the steering wheel so they are easily seen by me but not others. Anyone know anything about this DIY shift light stuff? Seems like I could tap into something that would send a signal at a certain rpm without paying $50 for it.

that's actually a pretty good idea...and wouldn't be that difficult to do...

I didn't see any that cheap before. As long as it's acturate, it will work. What I would like is to make a device to tell me what gear the car is in, and that's pretty easy to set up. And also have a top limit and bottem limit. That way, while racing I could keep the car right wear it needs to be.

thats a very good idea!! i was working a little while back with making a device to tell which gear the car was in and also tell when in nuetral, wasnt a big priority of mine and i eventually gave up, but id deff want the same setup as you with the tach stuff - like a green led when rpm's too low, and a red one when they are too high, stick em off to the left next to where the factory fog light button would go =)

I want to put it right behind the steering wheel on a flat looking piece. It would read /\ R 1 2 3 4 5 \/.

it's fairly easy to do (i think)
mount a plate with 3 micro switches on front and back of the shifter assembly, place them according to where the rod sits in each gear and have a "normaly closed" circuit for the neutral.
Connect LEDs to a panel with semi transparent number/letters.
You don't need a switch for reverse, you have the reverse light circuit.

I thought about doing this and sticking the LEDs in the shifter itself (with a strong input resistor so they don't shine super bright)

Micro switch:

I remember a while back i saw this Mugen one where it was just i think a small LED bulb which was the shift light. I think that would be better. They mounted it on the steering column. I think that ebay shift like is too big. Anyone know or have any idea what im talkin about?
