With my senior project behind me (and an A to show for it, yay! biggrin.gif), this quarter is going to be far easier than the last two, so I'll finally have some time to work on 6GC. biggrin.gif

I've actually already started re-writing 6GC from the ground up. I've got the login stuff and a lot of the key core components done. For those that care, I'm using extensive object oriented programming along with several design patterns, including basing the site on a model-view-controller. Technical details aside, the site will be faster, less intensive on the server, more secure, and easier to work on.

Of course, there will be new features as well. smile.gif

So far, here's the tentative list that I'm striving to achieve:
  • Better Member Profile URLs, like http://www.6gc.net/members/coomer.
  • Member Profile Photo Ordering
  • Ability to Remove your High-Res Photos
  • Better Administrative High-Res Photo Management (so photos get authorized much, much faster)
  • Some AJAX-based enhancements...for example, not leaving the page when you post a comment (these may be implemented at a later date, after site re-launch)
  • Some non-AJAX, JavaScript-based enhancements...nicer submit buttons, etc.
  • Better transaction feedback system that integrates with the main site's design and doesn't require popup windows
  • Ability for members to add parts and part photos
  • Downloads section, with wallpapers, sticker design in multiple formats for taking to your local sticker shop, etc. Probably no videos, as bandwidth is a killer and I'm already paying a lot for web hosting
  • Better member search page
  • Printer-friendly pages
  • Multimedia forum (for posting pics and vids)
  • Tentative: More contact options, besides AIM. Maybe MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, ICQ...I'm not sure on this one...what does everyone use the most?
  • Tentative: 6GC store, using Cafepress integrated with the main site

What do you guys think? Let me know if there's more you'd like to see.

My goal is to work on the site for a few hours every day until it's done. Most of the hard parts of development are completed (the basic framework, login functionality.) It works out well since I have more time with my senior project done, I'm too broke to finish the Celica, and most of my friends up here don't do anything but drink, which I don't really enjoy. kindasad.gif

So with any luck, the site will be re-launched within a couple months. Let me know what you'd like to see. biggrin.gif

Owning a site isn't necessarily expensive, but if it gets a lot of traffic it is. I pay $100 a month. And I have $700 I have to pay off on my credit card already.

Congrats on the grade. As I indicated a couple of months ago, I would like to see a wiki feature so that we can work collaboratively on documentation and start to document knowledge in members' heads.

I think the commercial members should pay for it. Private members could help out by buying club merchandise such as clothing, stickers, mugs, calendars, etc., or choosing to donate. Members with particular skills (spray-painting, detailing, electrical, etc) may want to consider making a small charge for their services and donating it to the site.

theres got to be some perks for being the owner of a website, or else no one would start up a site, idk. but the store would bring in some money.

The advertising doesn't pay off the site? I assumed you made a small amount. I know most people who own sites that are this popular do from the ads.

i noticed in some other forums, you can hover your cursor over the topic title and have a brief message pop up of the first few lines of the thread. i think that'd be pretty cool, cuz sometimes i don't remember if i read that thread already..

Honestly, I would be more than happy to pay $10 a year. Insentives like more pics in the profile or some note of our contribution next to our screen name. I'm surea good number of people would be happy to as well.

I would gladly pay a small annual fee, Coomer does enough for
the site with just his time, he shouldn't have to pay anything out
of his own pocket. I would even be down for a small percentage
use fee for the buy sell forum if there is an easy way to implement it. smile.gif

what about an annual contribution from members and a fee for sellers ? I mean I think it would be unfair to have a % applied to someone who's selling a 194 bulb, lol but people who organized GBs or are somehow making money on the site could pay a contribution to help.

I know I'm putting my shoe on my mouth but I really think is just fair.

i would be down with some sort of fee for extra features such as more pics, members section, or something like that. make it so you have to be a member to post in the for sale section. i don't know
one suggestion. maybe making a photo gallery instead of having to look up each members pics. i tried to find someone with a certain body kit (the andy's autosport one) and for about an hour with no luck. anywho, just a thought.

Make a contribution button. If somebody finds one of the how to articles helpful, they can donate 1 or 2 bucks through paypal.

I dont know if sponsoring will be a good idea. Maybe a fundraiser with current members.

What would be great is an online chat, to discuss about mods.

Chris, if you start charging, I'd hope that the "members' ride search feature" incompatibility problem with Macintosh computers would be fixed. It should be an easy fix by getting rid of "enctype=multipart/form-data" under the form tag since you're using "GET" instead of "POST".

idk, i think donation should be a "plus" feature. i wouldn't want to discourage people from joining the moment they find the site, because everyone that joins potentially brings something to the table.

i think it would be better to have a little star or something that shows next to your sn if you're a donating member.

it would encourage passersby to jump in, and everyone who would like to contribute (including myself) can do that.

x2, i know if i had to pay in the first place, i wouldnt of joined.
maybe the people that donate could get extra privilages or something to like ubershall said: encourage others. just a suggestion, because i think if there was a fee to join, not nearly as many people would become members.

the idea isnt a pay to use board, its an option an privilege to contribute to ensure the board will grow with useful knowledge over time. but the members who do contribute get a little something extra. like a different title other than enthusiast or something small. or maybe 6gc stickers. who knows.

well i wouldn't mind a membership fee. The only thing with charging every memeber is that some people dont use the site that much, so they might not be willing to pay and would just drop out. so mabey donations, or some kind of fund raisers to pay off Coomer for his hard work and it might give us some more opportunities for meets. i dunno, just throwin' some ideas out there.

Fund raisers and merchandise are great ideas. The 6gc calendar and 6gc and replica vinyl stickers in particular could be great little money earners.

on one of my other forums we have it so if you donate you get things like:
1) Access to a Members Only forum
2) PM Box increased to allow up to 500 messages
3) Free set of 6GC Decals
4) Free 6GC t-shirt (for donations of $50 or more)
5) A *new* Supporting Member button under their forum name.

i think something like that would be nice to have.

id be down to donate, but like people said have it be optional, but with benefits if you do, more photos, star or something, simple things like that and have different levels like 10, 20, 30 dollar ones, id be down for that in a heartbeat!! but it should still be free to sign up so new people come to the table as well, then once they see how awesome this place is they would be willing to give back in more than just posts!!!!

May I suggest a section (not related to the forum) for pictures taken during meets, in like a gallery form. Those pictures are always awesome. For us, or for new visitors, sometimes people just wanna browse images.

I am pro-donation, always have been. But Chris has always had conflicting thoughts about it. I support the bigger PM box, having a signature or avatar, the "Support Member" instead of Enthusiast, that kind of thing. Any forum-related bonuses. Or special options on your members page. BUT i do not support getting products for donating. This defeats the purpose, then Chris has to spend money on the products he sends us for donating, thus making that money disappear.

not nessesarily, if it takes say $20 to make a shirt and we donate like $40 or $50 and we get one. then the money can go toward repaying him for the shirt/the time to make them/some to coomer for keeping the site up.

wouldn't that increase the amount of work he would have to do ?

I think he has plenty stuff to do as it is

well it doesn't have to be Coomer that makes the mechandise. i mean if someone has the connections and would be willing to, some one else could make it for people on the site and that person could just split some of the profit with Coomer. Of course it would have to be someone willing to offer thier sevices and wouldn't mind sharing the profit. in exchange mabey Coomer could allow that person more options with the site, like more photos or something.

Hey guys,
I've been keeping an eye on the discussion here, and I'm kind of undecided at this point as far as what direction to go.

I definitely won't create a "paying members only" section like several sites have. I don't like the segregation that setups like that create.

A donation/subscription option is an idea I'm kind of throwing around. They would probably result in things like more photo storage, possible photo uploading on the forums, a "supporter" icon or something similar, and things like that.

As you all know, I have very little time already, so I will not be able to supply merchandise to those who donate/subscribe. I just don't have the time.

I'm kind of thinking about creating a store tied into Amazon that would have some Celica-related things...not sure though.

I don't know...those are just a few of my thoughts at the moment. But anyway, I'm going back to programming. smile.gif I've been making excellent progress, and I'm confident that soon 6G Celicas will be better than ever. biggrin.gif

Given the huge bandwidth needed to host videos, I think either continuing to prohibit videos being hosted on 6gc.net or making that a members only feature would make sense.

As 96bluevert suggested, I don't think we expect you to actually provide the merchandise but having a store front where a percentage of the sales price goes to 6gc.net would make a lot of sense. The members could provide the merchandise and the store-front would provide a unified view of what is available. The percentage is effectively a tax for using the store front (the ebay business model) and 6gc.net brand.

The members profile and rides section is already fantastic and one of the things that makes 6gc.net stand out from the others. I can't wait to see the new stuff biggrin.gif

I'd like to see backround photos in member's profiles. Hosted from user's photobucket accounts. (This would save server space)

I'm not a fan of the tile, I'd like one large picture. While scrolling down to see the list of modifications & comments only the text would move not the backround.

I'd also like to see usable links like this one below.

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WHh7t7fd7G8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WHh7t7fd7G8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

The background wouldn't really work with the design of the site. Plus in most cases it would make the text more difficult to read.

And as far as allowing embedded objects, that could lead to security issues.

I don't mean to just shoot down all your ideas, but I promise, there will be several new features that will make the site, including member profiles, better. wink.gif

Add an option to make donations to you, I'm sure with all of the dedicated members here, we could easily help you out with donating, and as was mentioned earlier, whoever donates, gets more features or something like that. I dunno... just a thought! A general car forum I'm on right now won't let you post in the vehicle specific fs forum unless you've donated at least $10. Not a bad idea.

Sorry I never got to your other thread...must've missed it. Anyway, I agree that a Wiki would be nice. I'm kind of concerned about maintaining the how-to articles. But I'll think about it. What's everyone else think about a [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki]wiki[/wiki]?

GREAT JOB ON 6gc.net!!!!!!!

if we all contribute 1$. There are 5000+ members, make the math. We can have a certificate of Support like one of our pics in our profiles.. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Just a sample... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I would like a links section for parts lookup. I have a coupe and there are so few things you can buy, im having a blast googling on the web and not finding anything. We have parts links and how to's in our website but everything is scattered in too many forums. Why not everything in one place, for easy search, and we can submit links for things that we find that are rare and special. Ive seen a couple of this around. And if this idea has already been posted, im sorry i did my best hovering all the 40 + posts. Anyway I love this site. As you can see I posted my car in the general discussion with 6gc stckers. Im hoping to atract other cars in the area.......

Best wishes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work..... give me the address to donate my 1$ (paypal)

I think a sort feature by bodykit would be awesome. You could see combinations of body pieces would look good together from different angles. Obviously it would take a big effort from members, but I'm sure a ton of members would participate.

^^
That would be pretty cool, like list all the body parts u got on the car, and then you could like search for a car that has all the parts that you would want to put on ur car.

Like many have said, tell us where to donate and we will!

On a motorcycle thread i used to frequent, they had a sticky on the top with basic donation information, that could be a start?

I like the idea of having a little thing to signify that you donate etc..

what about putting the EPC on here? we could save dustin from having a flooded inbox wink.gif

Thanks for the suggestions guys. smile.gif

Erik, yes you can. Just enter part of a username in the search box.

I'm beginning to get burnt-out/discouraged though. frown.gif Developing a website this large from the ground up takes forever, and most of what I've done up to this point is simply replicating what's already been done, which is very boring.

I'm just tired of developing the site. I took a break for a couple weeks where I worked on other projects but I just can't get back into wanting to develop the site. frown.gif I just need to get over the hurdle of replicating everything...then i can get to the fun, new, innovative stuff...seems like it's going to take forever though. frown.gif

Edit: I'm just overly stressed I think. I went for a drive through some country roads and I'm feeling better already. I'm gonna quit re-writing stuff for the night, and start coding some brand new stuff...that always makes me happy. smile.gif

a quick suggestion, could we break down the FS sections?? Like have 2 sections, one for cars and one for parts?? that way if some one is looking to buy just a car it makes it easier for them to not have to go through pages of FSs or WTBs, they can just click parts or click cars. I just think it would make things easier and make transactions flow a little better.

I don't think it's necessary to split up the forum at this point. The cars forum wouldn't be all that busy. wink.gif

I've been making good progress this week. I've decided that I'm going to implement the new backend architecture that I've been developing first, with minimal new features. Then I'll add features one-by-one. I really want to get the new architecture up and running, so hopefully that will happen within a couple weeks. smile.gif

Isn't it possible for you to work together with a fellow 6GC member or anyone else who has experience with this. Would make the work go faster. You will decide the layout and all, but all the coding stuff can be done together.

And about donating money. Just ask and I'll donate smile.gif Would have been nowhere if 6GC wouldn't exist, regarding car technology,

Hey coomer, when will you add more stickies or more tech info in the forums...to be honest i troll the forums everyday, and too often are the same questions asked that have been answered, and too often have there been many unanswered questions about changes or improvements that can be made to celica...such as, head swapping, bodykits (which was just brought up earlier), write-ups on general info for car maintenance that isnt just "linked" (since some links tend to die frown.gif ). Anywho, just my two cents, and btw, you have an awesome site bro, that gets the attention of alot of ppl from different countries...maybe you can make this site more friendly to them with info that is just as specific to their cars as it is our american celi's smile.gif

There's a line at which we need to draw the line. We already have several links within stickies, but will always consider adding more threads if they're good. We can't link to every thread in the forums though...would kind of ruin the point. wink.gif

And I agree...information shouldn't be specific just to American Celis. We try hard to make information not specific to US Celicas, and I'm re-working several parts of the site to hopefully help make information more general.

Also, to give you guys an update on the site rewrite status, I'm finally making good progress again. I got the parts database finished up, and it's going to be better than before, with more features coming after the launch. I'm working on the "Manage Your Account" section now, and it too will be nicer than before. smile.gif

I think I'm actually more excited about the redesign than everyone else. It's not going to look a whole lot different and there will be minimal new features, but the backend is soooo much nicer. Now that the core functionality, classes, libraries, and models are done, development goes so quickly. smile.gif

This morning I was able to get the add photo and add high-res photo forms done, as well as getting the remove photos functionality working.

I'm bored and taking a quick break from coding, so here's a list of some of the new features that are already done.
  • Better member profile URLs
  • Better add photo form
  • Ability to remove high-res photos (with some neat unobtrusive JavaScript effects)
  • Ability to add parts and add part photos (I'm hoping people with parts on their cars will begin adding photos of parts once the site is re-launched.
  • Improved part detail pages
  • Improved control panel overview page
  • Multimedia forum (actually online already)

Well I'm very curious about how it's going to work out. That photo ordering looks very nice, are you keeping it in PHP/JavaScript or are you going .Net on us?

I'm sticking with PHP/MySQL/XHTML/CSS/JavaScript. ASP.NET is nice in some respects, but I much prefer PHP.

Exactly what I would do.

I use Asp.Net at my part-time job, where I'm creating a business 2 business content management system. (On my own, I share your opinion about splitting tasks between different programmers.)
Asp.Net results in big slow applications, and requires Windows servers (which are also resource unfriendly), and development is too many times delayed by cryptic error messages.

This is why, when I work on projects of my own company, I only work with PHP (using object-oriented programming) & MySQL, and all in valid xhtml and css (layout & functionality neatly separated). And off course JavaScript where usefull but not for basic functionality off the site.

I'm looking forward to the new features, and I hope to pick up some new ideas for future projects.

I haven't made a ton of progress in the last few days, as I've been busy with graduation and lots of other work. Tonight I plan to get a fair amount done though.

I went ahead and made part of my 6GC To-Do list public, so you can view it at http://todo.cisforcoomer.com/list/6gc and see updates as I go along.

I'm hoping that within the next couple weeks I'll be able to put the new architecture online. smile.gif

It's getting pretty close now. All of the old functionality is now replicated and there are just a couple dozen things left to do before it's ready. biggrin.gif

Today sucks. frown.gif

My development machine died completely. Hopefully I can recover the newest work I've done on 6GC...otherwise I have to revert to a backup from a week ago (and I got a lot done in the last week). frown.gif

But even if I do, I have no computer to develop on, at least not for now. frown.gif

Edit: Got the important 6GC data off of the hard drive. That's what I was most worried about. Now I just need a computer to develop on.

I think it's illegal to host the manual online (copyrighted material), but I'll look into it. smile.gif

Oh yes...I didn't know that people actually looked at that. tongue.gif

I'm not sure if it'll be feasible to setup the subdomain just yet. I'll try though. smile.gif

It's mainly due to the fact that I have basically no reliable internet to develop with. frown.gif But hopefully soon I'll get some stuff done. Actually, that's my goal for today. smile.gif

Is there any way you can put an add-feedback button in the feedback section you get to through someones profile?
