hey guys....so this weekend i officially started my turbo project. After many months of researching and buying parts, me and my friend started on this thing. Ive bought just about everything except an oil pan so far. Lots of help so far from Manny, and i'm sure we'll be calling on him a lot more, as the project goes on ...hope you dont mind manny lol. So we got most of the wiring done this weekend, wiring up the Safc ll and my gauges. Ill try to keep you guys posted as this thing gets more underway...Im at school, and can only come home on the weekends to work on it, so i'm hopin to have this done by the end of April. For now, here's a few pics of the stuff i've got so far...minus the injectors, pipes, manifold, MAP sensor, and oil lines...which are all being delivered by tomorrow or tuesday.

It's got 154,000 on it, but its strong. Never had a problem with it, and feel that if i take my time and build it right, i shouldnt have any problems with it.

Yea...i was about a few days away from actually buying a 3's clip, till i started looking into the 5sfte...i did a little math, and figured this would be a lot less money...Plus, im not really looking for much over 200whp, so i figured id go this direction. The clip alone was 2000, the wiring harness would be about another 3, and i dont have the room to do the swap at my house, so id have to pay my mechanic to do it for about 600. I was looking at well over 3k's for the whole thing. ( assuming nothing went wrong). And im well under 2k's with this, and just about done buying everything.

gut the DP. your turbo will love it. for the oil relocation lines, maybe you should consider SS braided lines. and for the oil relocation adapter that's going on the block, i think you should get the one manny has. i have one that's like yours and i have problems completely securing it cause the Dp was blocking the lines from turning. GL with your set up. and remember to get it dyno tuned.

vin, i told them about the problems we had with your setup and the lines.

matt, i would AT THE MINIMUM get some heat sleeves for those lines. like i said to you before, those lines are in close proximity to your DP ect, and will be exposed to some serious heat.
the last thing you want as your driving down the road is for one of those lines to pop.
wink.gif
looks good man!!
keep some money put aside for a rebuild on that turbo.

ya thats what i said in the post before. we called marios in FR and he said he can get sleeves for it. and maybe we will heat wrap the downpipe too.

yea, if the wrap isnt working out to well, im just gonna buy some braided lines...but for now, i want to see how some heat wrap works. As for the downpipe, im def. going to be buying a new downpipe shortly, but just gonna use the stock one for now. And i'll probably gut it after i get that sticker lol smile.gif....im at school and am on a tight budget for now, and am just trying to get my setup up and running for the summer when i start working again...then , alot of things will start getting replaced.

nice! I'm getting close to my 5sfte too. I just spent $550 today and ordered an APEXi AFC Neo and a AEM UEGO wideband O2.

whit kind of intercooler is that and where did you get it?

Can anybody say something about the quality of glowshift gauges? I saw them, but I figured that because they were so cheap that they probably wouldn't be accurate. anybody ever used them before?

I was told the oild filter didn't have to be relocated... is that true?

one last thing, I also want to know how to gut the downpipe.

I bought the intercooler off ebay...its a JDM Sport FMIC Intercooler 28x7x3 with 2.5 intlets

The gauges im not too sure about...i read some mixed reviews, mostly good ones, but some people didnt like them.

I am almost positive that the oil filter has to be moved...You can fit a downpipe on without moving the filter, however, you'll never be able to get the filter off to change your oil....theres just not enough room.

Yes. That's a Camry engine bay. There is a motor mount in the way of a normal 3s-gte downpipe. It attaches to the front of the block. The 5s-fte Camry guys (93-up) have to run piping like that - though I have seen many better versions (2.5" mandrel bent following the same route).

I had a 3s-fte in my Camry beforehand and never relocated the oil filter - it can be done with a custom downpipe. Just don't plan on doing an oil change when the motor is hot!

Relocation is not necessary - just save alot of headaches when changing the oil. Although it works well to leave it as the stock setup and if it can be done on an MR2 it can be done on anything. I just can't see adding in extra stuff on something as important as oil.

i cant see fitting a normal sized oil filter WITH the stock oil cooler in place.
the camry is another story all together, IIRC it dont come equipped with the oil cooler like the celica does.

Hey guys...not too much went in today due to some pretty bad weather over here, and lack of garage. Looks like its gonna be raining tomorrow too, so i'll have to do what i can....However, some things did go in today, the fuel pump is all set now, and so are the injectors. Here's some pics of what was done today. Hopefully tomorrow so more stuff will get to go in if the weather works with us.

This is how we had to work today kindasad.gif

there's alot of people building 5sftes right now. idk why... I still have a couple things left to get for mine. I'm hoping july or august to have it all together and get to work. though, I'm installing whatever I can now so it doesn't need to be done later.

Just spent a good hour and a half sand blasting justins turbo and manifold. the turbo had some grease build up and the manifold had surface rust. but no more. I am going to get them ceramic coated to look better. so untill next time here are some advances on the stuff...

who you planning on having coat that stuff?
you'll need to disasemble the turbo to have the hot side coated. i wouldnt coat the compressor side.
if anything, i'd polish it.

hey guys...got ALOT done today smile.gif . Car still isnt running, but would be if we didnt run out of daylight lol. Next weekend it will def. be running, and should have the exhaust and tuning done by the following week. Only thing thats left to do is connect the coolant lines, oil lines, gap the spark plugs, and add some oil. Everything is on the car, just need to connect it to the turbo. I also have the flange for my Turbo xs type H bov, thats getting welded to my pipes this week. Here's some pics of what was done today.
IPB Image

IPB Image
Turbo and manifold bolted up together

IPB Image
Oil line that i had welded with the fitting

IPB Image
Turbo and partial intercooler tubing mocked up

IPB Image
FINALLY...all the piping is done!! woot.gif

IPB Image

IPB Image

So as you can see, everything is basically done, except for some simple stuff. I should have some more pics by next weekend of the car complete, and yes, i will post a vid. wink.gif

see how the clamps are on left where there is one bolt on one side and another bolt on the other? this is how they should be. and then on the right see how they are both on top? this is according to my auto class instructor, but he said it balances it out so you have a better clamp that's less likely to leak.

so, how'd you mount the intercooler?

no T-bolts or hump couplers?

anyway, looking good so far! I can't wait to see it all done!

yea, im going to need to take my pipes off to finish, so i wasnt trying to match up clamps too much...when i put them on for good, im going to put them with both bolts going in the same direction.....dont really know the difference which way they go if anyone wants to help me out.....as for the hump hoses and t bolt clamps, the clamps that i got arnt like the regular ones. They dont dig into the couplers, theres a metal rinf that prevents the threaded part from hitting the coupler...If i have any promlems with them poping off, ill buy some t bolts. You cant really see that well in the picture, but to the left theres a black 90 degree coupler that i used. These are no hump hoses, however they do allow the pipes to flex a bit. I have 2 of them in my piping so i think i should be fine. btw...thanks for all the support guys, greatly appreciated smile.gif

Sorry, don't mean to thread jack but this is something i just noticed now, and i had a question about it, and it's for anyone that knows, but how come the alternator on the 5SFTE set up does not require the alternator air scoop that ST185s have? I've always heard it was rather important to help protect the alternator from the heat of the downpipe and turbo manifold. I hope people know what im talking about and i don't sound crazy. I was just thinking that a 5sfte setup would create just as much heat as a 3sgte would.

The clamps that justins using are from HTS where he got the couplers from. They are ss liner clamps and they are very strong. Not that Home depot stuff. It holds really well. Everything is coming alond smoothly. We should have it running early sunday morning. I am goint to work on his car during the week so we can fire it up together on sunday!! i need to clean up the wiring and finish off the gauges.

well...the car is running and is creating boost. we got finished at about 10 last night. Cleaned up a little, put my seats back in, took the car off the jacks, all while the car was running and idleing pretty well. Went to go take the first test run, and noticed it was leaking coolant. thought it was oil at first, which would have been a bad sign, but at least its only coolant. So this week we gotta take the turbo off and redo the coolant lines. But, at least my cars running and creating boost.

Thanks alot man smile.gif i cant wait till i take it out for its first drive....im not exactly sure, Im pretty sure its the lines that we T'd off right behind the turbo, the ones that originally went to the oil cooler. Cant exactly tell untill the turbo and manifold gets pulled off though.

ya it has to be from the t's because the car was running for about 10 mins b4 it started leaking. which means it had to have burnt the lines by touching the manifold. easy fix but it still sux.

i have boost!!! we fixed the coolant lines tonight and put the stock heat shelid over them. The hard oil line from my turbo burnt right through the coolant lines, so it should hold up good now. Anyways...took it out for its first run, and holy sh*t, my bov is loud. Boosts pretty well, but the only thing is, is that my clutch blows and slips whenever i hit like 4500 rpms. I have a new clutch that i bought a few months ago, but i just gotta get the money together to have it put on. Also, i definatley gotta get some T bolts. the clamps i have now are holding up pretty well, its just in certain areas like near the throttle body that keep poppin off. But other than that, im def so excited that my car is finally running! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Tues. its going to the shop to have my exhaust done, and this weekend, we'll be puttin in the wideband to make this thing run better!!

Im thinking fuel cut due to too lean or too rich. thats all i can think of. we should get the downpipe back from the shop today with the wideband installed. Our buddy drilled and tapped the oem downpipe b4 the cat for the wideband sensor so we should be able to do some tuning maybe tonight!!

Manny can explain it much better but it has to do with the ECU pulling timing. Once you've reached (and past) you torque peak your ECU is fighting detonation, and pulling timing. Solution: run high high octane gas or WI will help for now.

oh. yeah, I plan on putting on a water/methanol injection kit as my first mod after the turbo gets put on. until then it'll be on 91 octane gas.

didn't really know where to post this, but what does everyone do for an intake on their 5sfte? it seems like presure2 and shin had some kind of a rubber hose with a universal cone filter on the end. I'm wondering about where to plug the stock air temp sensor and the one vacuum line into. I'm assuming it's the intake hose, but then, what kind of intake hose do you get?

the IAT sensor goes in your INTERCOOLER piping, after the intercooler.
you need to feed the ecu the signal of the temp entering the throttle body, not the turbo.

didn't really know where to post this, but what does everyone do for an intake on their 5sfte? it seems like presure2 and shin had some kind of a rubber hose with a universal cone filter on the end. I'm wondering about where to plug the stock air temp sensor and the one vacuum line into. I'm assuming it's the intake hose, but then, what kind of intake hose do you get?

Thanks. I still want to know what you're using as an intake hose though. smile.gif

Check if your stock intake fits over the turbo inlet. You can use that temporarily... heck, I used my 3s-fe stock intake tube for over 10k miles with no problems on my old 3s-fte. You'll need some adapter or small bit of pipe to put a cone filter on the end.

I no longer have the stock intake tube. my mom threw it away after I put my injen on. I was thinking of just taking the filter off the injen intake and sticking it directly to the turbo temporarily. but idk.

got my muffler on...not too loud, at least for now untill i get a different dp. But still running strong after a couple weeks. Havnt takin it to the dyno yet, waiting to get my first paycheck to get a couple of things. My first purchase is def. going to be a water injection kit that will get oredered by the end of the week. That should hopefully clear up the fuel cut at high rpm's. But hopefully tomorrow manny and i are going to wideband my car some more and get it to run a little smoother. here's some videos of my bov and a little run at 7psi...havnt turned it up yet untill i get everything in tip top shape!!
Thanks alot jeff! i only hope that one day, my celi can be as nice as yours lol. smile.gif

bov
a little boost

alright guys, so im ready to almost put my car on the road again for winter break....so today i figured would be a good day to take off all my piping and clean my pipes.....and what a surprise i found! i had known my turbo leaked some oil, but on the cold side of the piping, up to the intake, i found so much sludge of both oil and W/I fluid. Its sort of a light brown color. But i found so much....i dropped some of my piping, and about a cup and a halfs worth came out. I was kind of scared as to why there was so much. However, on the hot side, there is virtually none. Does anyone know why there would be so much????

as long as it gets completely dry before you re-install it, then I don't see why you couldn't. it's made of aluminum, so it won't rust.

bringin back my thread!! anyways, i've noticed on long runs, my engine will smoke a bit. now i say engine, because i can't tell where it's exactly coming from. It seeps through the vents and sides of my hood after its been running for about an hour or so. it's not over heating or anything though. So my guess is that theres just not good ventilation inside my bay. I have a stock hood and still my stock bumper. Could this be part of the reason why it might be getting so hot in there that it begins to smoke?

mine did the same. it's most likely some oil or some other kind of leak dripping onto something hot like your exhaust or something.

its white if id have to give it a color. And its neither the left or the right. The only thing i can think of is either i have oil dripping on my exhaust like 6strings said, or its just getting so hot in there, that the heat is smoking up.

smells bad? i think ur burning oil because of a leak... check ur engine bay and look for wet greasy splockes or sprey....

my whole engine bay is full of speckles of oil lol. I had an incident a few years back where i lost almost all my oil everywhere in my bay. Ive tried cleaning it so many times, it just wont get clean. I think it might be the exhaust, ive looked under a few times and always see my exhaust right where it meets my downpipe, sizzling. Maybe i can wrap it or fabricate a heat shield to sit right above it....not too sure.
