I don't believe the 22R was ever availiable in a front wheel drive car... so you're gonna have one hell of a time fabricating mounts and a drivetrain for it. Why not just get a 3SGTE?

not to be the douche bag, but....

there is a ton of info on engine swaps, what will work, what some have done, ideas, and other such things in the engine/maintenece forum, in the stickies section.

check it out, it may answer ALOT of questions.

AWD... but the engine is mounted transversely, like a FWD. The only difference is the tranny. RWD engine are almost always mounted longitudinally. Yes... you can have an AUTO tranny with the 3SGTE... but means you have to source out a Caldina 3SGTE Auto ecu.

That said... search these forums because a LOT of information is hidden amougst the pages.

with the right amount of money....(like bottomless pits for pockets) u could technically swap any motor, into any car, its just that the best bang for your buck is probaly the 3sgte. its been done (many times), lots of info on this site and others, and its reliable and has TONS of potential.

I'm a big 22R fan (the engine I originally started tuning)... basically the toughest 4 banger ever... but it's really not suited for these cars. It has a relatively short power band which is only really good for hauling (trucks) and drag racing. In stock form... it's not really all that fast either. Best of luck.

if u wanna know YOUR car...like yours specificly, u can go to a drag strip and weigh it.

somewhere between 2600 and 2900 depending on options/accesories.

for example: Presure2's car weighed in at 2900lbs at the track, with no spare, and half a tank of gas.

a 22R or 22RE or 22REC would be a good motor to put in your car, but i donno if it would fit. The block is pretty long in compairison to say a 5sfe. Also you might run into cooling issues. The 22R series motors use a clutch fan and since they r for RWD cars. But i donno, if you wanna put one in it would b interesting, but i think it would take alot of fabrication/coustomization to get it to work. Just i donno what tranny you would b able to use. I dont think ive seen a bellhousing that will fit a 22R to any FWD tranny. But yea, 22R definatly one of my fav toyota motors. I got a 22RE in my 83 celica, pulls sooo nice and runs stupid strong.

My first tuner car too - my '81 Celica GT. Cool engine and OMG what a tank. MY Grandfather bought it and drove it for approx 36K miles - gave it to my Mom who drove it here in Houston's oppresively hot and humid weather then drove it to NYC area, drove it there for 4 years, drove it back to Houston and drove it for about two years. We garaged it, I bought it from my Grandfather, fixed it back up and drove it for about a month. Then one fateful day I asked my Mom when was the last time she did an oil change [about 250K miles at this time]. She asked me "what's an oil change?". So basically my Mom probably never even had the oil changed for all those miles. I changed the oil and the head gasket blew within 5mins. down the street. I am sure I put in enough oil/not too much - I think the oil pump just couldn't push new thick oil through the block anymore laugh.gif
Cool car - I rebuilt the engine and she was good until a lady totalled her 4 years or so later.
