Hello,

I just bought a '95 ST liftback that does not have a rear wiper. I was at the local salvage yard this week getting upgraded leather seats (the car came with cloth), and I noticed 2 of the 3 6G's had OEM rear wipers. How hard is it to add the rear wiper? Can it easily be done with the original gate, or does the new gate need to be put on? Is the car already wired?

Thanks!

the only reason yours wouldnt have it is if the previous owner removed it. so all the wiring and mounts should still be there. just drill a hole where they covered it up. if you need the parts and dont want to get them at the junk yard I have an extra wiper and motor and what ever else you need.

Interesting, that's the second thing I've been told my gate should have that it doesn't. I also do not have a spoiler/wing of any kind. I will have to pop off the trim cover and check for the wiring and holes. I would LOVE to have the wing and wiper back, especially if it means I don't have to buy a new gate.

At the salvage yard, I noticed there are 3 wire looms that come into the top of the gate. One was on the left, one on the right, and one in the center. Any idea which one is the wiring for the wiper? I didn't even look at the wiper stalk on the steering column, but is it safe to assume Toyota did it's usual thing and put a spinning control "ring" on the wiper arm for the rear wiper?

i also saw a hatch at the junkyard with no rear wiper, it didnt look like it was shaved off; the previous owner/s didn't do anything to the car as far as modifications at all.

nope, bone stock.

The round holes where the 2 post wing would mount even have OEM rubber plugs in them.

iirc, with the st's it was an option (along with the sunroof and cruise) however all the gt's had them. if you don't have any of the wireing or the moter, the install might be harder than you may think.

EDIT:
from info articles
QUOTE
The exterior of the two models are different as well. On the Toyota Celica ST, there isn't an emblem on the back of the car, but on the GT, there's an emblem labeling the car as a GT. On the 1996 and up years of the sixth generation Celica, the GT has standard fog lights, and the ST can have fog lights, but it's an optional feature. On the hatchback, the GT has a standard rear windshield wiper, and this feature is optional on the ST model. The stock wheels on the sixth generation Celica GT are 15 inches, while they're 14 inches on the ST model.

Toyota was really good in the pickups and 4Runners as far as prewiring for everything (I have a lot of experience with 1979-1995 pickups and 4runners). So with any luck, the wiring will be there. I checked out the wiring on my own gate, and it also has 3 harness "boots" going from the roof to the top of the hatch. Anyone know which one the wiper harness goes through, and/or what the wiper plug looks like under that cover?

Worst case scenario, I'd go to the extent of buying an entire replacment gate (local yard has a good one for $250) and installing the steering wheel stalk. Speaking of which, I forgot to look at mine to see if it has the dial for the rear wiper (I'm assuming toyota stuck with the traditional dial it uses in other vehicles with rear wipers).

I know, I'm nuts, but I'm trying to be practical for our minnesota winters. I'm so used to rear wipers now, I don't know what it's like without them. The snow ought to stick real nice to the celica back window without a wiper!

I checked the wiper stalk tonight and there's no control for a rear wiper. It's mentioned in the owner's manual as an option, so it's probably safe to assume the car just didn't come with it. I highly doubt someone would have spent the time removing a wiper arm, washer nozzle, and wiper stalk on the steering column, PLUS removing the rear wing and filling all the holes in so clean.
