Hey all. This is going to be my offical build thread. I recently purchased a 2004 Touring Fully Loaded 6 speed Z. The only problem was, it was a theft recovery. The thieves presented a fake ID and had the car gone for a little over one hour! And this is the outcome. This car is going to take me a little while to get together because I'm a 19 year old college student. I paid for the car myself and have to pay for everything, so funds are limited after paying for my apartment at school, phone, insurance on the other car, gas, etc. Here are pics of the car as I bought it.

Here's what I've got since I got the car:

Things I need: (bold= I have the item)
Hood
HID Headlights
Passenger side fender
Lower center console w/ AC controls
Upper center console with gauges
Airbox
Nismo Front Bumper *on the way*
Nismo Side Skirts
Nismo rear extensions *on the way*

Driver's side fender
Door Sills
BOSE headunit
Radiator *on the way*
Rad. support
Engine cover
Battery/other corner cover
Front bumper reinforcement
Headrest

What else can you see that I need? Feel free to copy paste my list or just state things that you see missing that I need!

Yeah...fixing that cut harness doesn't look like fun.

Edit: Is the engine bay a different color than the outside from the factory, or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

I've always wanted a 350Z or an older Z for that matter. I think the Z cars are beautiful cars. GL dustin, looks like alot of work ahead of you.

Nice find! You're lucky though, when I was working in College Park at a collision center, we'd get some pretty f'd up stolen recoveries! But nonetheless, your's looks in pretty good condition. If you don't mind my asking, how much did they let it go for? Salvage title?

Random Note: We had this G35 come into the shop one day, with 4 miles on it. Some noob porter (transporter) took it off the truck and smashed it all up. We got it and made it look like yours, no front materials. They were gonna junk it. Never found out what happened but it was crazy.

Coomer- Yeah it does seem that way... it seems really light in terms of the rest of the car... but it's had no paint work, body work, etc.

eggman- nope just an oem hood

Romas- yeah I know frown.gif This is the part that worries me the most... I'm trying to find a rear ended Z to cut out its loom so i can replace or just cut it and solder them together. I really need to get a friend of mine here to take his front end off so we can inspect everything further.

DeW- yeah that tire shine is top on my list of priorities!

daazndood- nah this is my first Z. This is my second car (first one obviously being the celica!)

Thanks for the comments guys... I hope to keep this thread as up to date as possible with assembly and all that jazz... It's going to be a great learning experience for me

Dustin- you should look for a damaged one in a salvage yard, maybe something totaled with rear end damage so you can get all the hoses and **** that you need.

That does look like a total headache, but the reward will be awesome! GL

haha sorry guys... There will be no TT, T, or SC for a while.... I wanna enjoy it in its current state for a couple of years... but if I get bored with it... Then all hell will break loose!
Tina- Yeah I agree completly with you... So if everyone could keep an eye out for me that would be GREAT! smile.gif
EDIT: With the more I think about it, i thought about looking for a front end damaged one for the wiring looms and stuff because the salvage yard is more apt to sell it cheap if the rest of the engine is sh!t

UPDATE:
Some of the older members may recall the 2003 Red 350Z I took to prom last year. It was my moms best friends car. Well she's been trying to sell it here locally for a couple of weeks and they relocated it out somewhere else so more people would see it a couple of days ago. Something shorted out at 2am and caused a fire. it lit the entire gas tank/rear on fire... As much as that sucks, she had full coverage and still has her hummer to drive so I dont feel as bad. The good news is that if insurance doesn't want an arm and a leg for it, I'll be getting it. it will have almost everything I'm missing and a lot of leftover stuff that i'll be able to sell and recoup most of my costs. Here's a pic of what her car looks like now frown.gif

Yeah I thought that after it got here... But I took a step back, took a deep breathe and realized that I'm on NO time table at all. Sure I'd love to have it done asap, but I'm taking my time and attempting to do things correctly.

I'm not getting that Z frown.gif Insurance thinks someone may have tampered with it, so they're investigating then it's going to a salvage yard about an hour away. So the affordibility just went bye bye... back to this being a multi-month project frown.gif

I stand majorly corrected... I got the red Z smile.gif It got dropped off today... I am starting to feel like Romas... Cars are just piling up!!! Haha well it still won't be on the road for a while because i'm going to do 99% of everything myself and taking my time... But seriously, minus two door panels and a headrest, I'm good to go smile.gif Also I will be able to recoup a lot of fees from the engine, tranny, headlights, front bumper, a fender, hood, maybe some interior pieces like the seats if I can get the smoke smell out of them.... All in all this is shaping up very nicely... Stay tuned!!! Jeremy1210 and Fastbird might make appearances in this thread while helping me piece it all together... I can't wait smile.gif

Good luck with the project, looks like its going to take some time, but its going to be worth the wait! My friend has a 350 and they are great cars with an amazing exhaust note!

I really like the look of the old 70's Z cars, and am getting tempted to buy one as a project, but as with most classics, most of them are pretty much corroded away by now frown.gif!

wow haven't been on here in a while.

Dude I wish I knew about this sooner , I just finished parting out my '06Z

I'm getting out of it because of a oil consumption issue. Getting myself into a bmw 335i.

anyways check out my350z.com and 350zmotoring.com they might be able to help you out.

Also pm me if you need any help with the Z

ahh ****... are u serious? I woulda killed for ur headlights! I want a set of 06+ lights so bad. I'm on my350z.com and i'll have to check out the other website. I did get another Z if u look at the pics that has a good front so basically I'm to the point where I'll most likely need to simply get some time to swap a lot of stuff over, sell the longblock, a fender, hood, front bumper, side skirts, air bags, auto tranny and then most likely buy new door panels (messed up from the flames) and new door panel/kickplate things and I'm good to go. I just really need that free time to do all that stuff! If you do manage to come across a decently prices set of 06+ HID lights, let me know though!

That cut harness looks like a headache

I used to drive my ex-gf's 350Z all the time. Their amazing cars! You can get them sideways and they correct themselfves. Simply great cars.

update time:
Well between being sick and working 70 hour weeks... I haven't had much time at all to work. But tonight I finally got a few hours to work. And got the fenders, side skirts, splash guards, front bumper, headlights, and windshield wiper components all removed.
The wiring issues are still a big deal. Seeing as though the silver Z has the upgraded VDC system which is a lot more complicated than the standard TCS on the Red Z, it's made me look into a new wiring harness. That and the large harness that was cut still hasn't been replaced because it's not 100% that it's a direct replacement.
I will be transferring brackets and so forth tomorrow and then on wednesday test fit the body kit before I take everything to the shop.
Wish me luck? lol

the front loom controls the fans, airbag sensor, horn, headlights maybe?
No i dont have the fender emblems, doors, fluid tanks

you did an awsome job. good decsion finding a rear hit car! now take that wireloom that got cut and replace it from the parts car. thing with airbag systems if you just fix the wiring you run the risk of corrision getting in there and shorting out the system which may result in an airbag deployment which obviously could be very harmfull to your person. so becarefull and make sure to swap that out. and good luck and more pics!

figure it's time for an update... nothing has really changed... living 2 hours away from home and being at college means i'm rarely ever home. The harness never showed, the guy i ordered it through ditched out and i cannot get a hold of him. Said hell with it... with with West Covina out in cali for the harness and paid for it last night... Hopefully it's there when i get home from finals. I plan on working on it most of Christmas break to get it done. Finally a break from school....

basically back from the dead..... Yes, I finally got a few hours to work on the Z. Update:
Sold the old HID's and picked up a set of 06+ Bi-xenon's smile.gif
BOSE headunit, doorpanels, and headrest are on their way as we speak
Got the dash out of the car and traced all the lines for the wiring harness
Looking for the proper tool to pull the AC lines from the firewall so that I can put in the new harness
It's starting to become a fun thing to do.
Luckily, I'll be at home for a week with work, so I should have an hour or two a night to work on it,
PROJECT COMPLETION ETA: End of June
Celica back on the road, ETA: June 15th

Update:
Nissan sent me the wrong wiring harness and we didn't figure this out until the new harness was in and had two small plugs that didn't line up.... what a *****! I called west coast covina and spoke with the owner and he admitted it was their fault even though their computer was the one who had the information wrong... So they sent me the correct harness and it's being fitted in Friday when I go home from college.
I think I have everything that I need now minus the panels that never showed up.... Guy took my money and ran frown.gif
pics coming on friday or saturday most likely

This thing is almost embarassing to update given I've had it so long now... but honestly living two hours from home I barely ever make it home and always seem to find more pressing matters to take care of when home for that limited amount of time. Lame, I know. Also, a great investment, I know. Hahaha ok where here I go.... and sorry for the mass of ****ty pics from my phone.
OK well I got the old harness out, and man was that thing a bitch to get out. Once I finally found all the plugs and connections to undo under the driver's side dash I was able to pull the harness through the firewall. But as you can see in the pics, the harness is too big to fit through the area as is. So what I had to do was remove the wiper assembly and undo the brake lines to give myself a little wiggle room.
From there we were able to pull the rest of the harness out and attempt to put the new one in. I also had to remove the heater core so that the tubes would go through the firewall to give me enough room to squeeze by.
Step 1) The harness had many exposed wires and I didn't want to risk cutting them on the metal or having something happen, so I used eletrical tape to cover up any wires no encompassed by the harness shroud. Tedious, but well worth it for the peace of mind.
Step 2) To avoid having different sections have copious amounts of stress when pulling through, I taped a lot of the connections together to compress them to pull through the firewall or snake through tight areas.... Again... very worth it.
Time for some pics:

I'm fitting a huge harness.... through... there?!?!?!

Yeah you got it, through that tiny ass gap..... not happening without some thinking

Classy, I know, but it worked!

Ok so to keep going.
Once the lines and heater core were outta the way, the new harness went in after about 40000000 curse words, 200 busted knuckles/cut hands... and a decent amount of beer. But here's what it looked like on the inside:

Notice the bucket and carpet holding up the steering wheel: I had to undo the entire long tube running on the inside of the car to fit everything in and remove the heater core. The steering column had to be completely undone basically and instead of just hanging there.... we used that bucket and carpet. Haha

I'm pretty sure the term is "FML- F**K my life* when I see how much ish is going on within my car. And this being my first project anything like this.

ok now for the progress:
Got the tube bolted back down, wiring harness in, brake lines reconnected, and wiring under the dash finished. Here's some of the progress pics from today, but I got tired and forgot to keep taking pics:
The main part of the interior dash installed:

The passenger side air bag hooked up and bolted down

What stopped my progress for the day? Sadly just the left side of this pic

I dont have the bracket to hold the radio in and finish up the center console.
From there it is literally 30 minutes to finish the interior. Which will happen next weekend providing I can get the parts here in time. Also, my interior and dash are BLACK... So I ordered the center console piece and got this one:

At a glance it looks fine right? well in the car it is definitely a new model piece that has a bit of grey/silver in it and looks very tacky. So I'm trying to order a new center console piece this week as well.

I know it might not be a lot to some of you guys. And others will say it is taking too long. But I bought the car in no hurry to finish it and learn a lot. Needless to say, I've learned a sh!tton and I'm very happy I did it. It will be done relatively soon then it gets painted and inspected. I'll try to update more frequently now that I have a bit of free time on weekends to make the 130 mile journey just to get it done. smile.gif
The new lights smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif Bi-xenon

And the parts in their area, waiting to go in!

Shut up man! You know how busy I am! But yeah, I have a whole new understanding and appreciation for this type of work. I just talked to the guy that runs a body shop out of one of our storage building/warehouses... and He says if I wanna learn how to paint and do other kinds of body work this summer he will teach me and put me on the clock. So hopefully I"ll learn more!

So I came home again this weekend and here's what I got so far:
A few things from the burnt Z

More of the dash is in! Starting at the pasenger side.

Ok, so you can see the majority of the center console. What I ended up doing since the other center console upper piece was a different shade was I took out the center console upper piece from the burnt Z and spent about an hour and a half cleaning all the smoke off and seeing if it was salvageable. I also took the two main brackets on the cd player from the red Z and put it on the cd player going into the gray Z. Obviously I also had to replace to top set of triple gauges because.... well.... the old ones were melted frown.gif
Then I went to put the new cd player in. But what you cant see behind it was that when they stole the stuff out of it they jacked up the harness that plugged into the back of the cd player. They took two of the connectors that go in the back. So what I ended up doing was taking the harness from the burnt Z and de-pinning the connectors to put into the gray Z. HUGE PAIN IN THE A$$!.
The driver's side... coming together!

The rest of the center console.
